(Debutant Movie – Dilwaale Dulhaniyaan Le Jaayenge-1980)
‘Le jaayenge le jaayenge, dilwaale dulhaniyaa le jaayenge’ from ‘Chor Machaaye Shor-1974’ has become a cult song. The phrase ‘dilwaale dulhaniyaa le jaayenge’ has become an phrase that compulsorily gets used in Indian wedding related matters. It became one of the must play song in Indian baaraat procession. Half a century have passed since this song was created and this song is still going strong in wedding circles. 21 years after this song was created, a movie was made with the title ‘Dilwaale Dulhaniyaan Le Jaayenge’-1995, which was without a doubt a tribute to the iconic song of ‘Chor Machaaye Shor-1974’. The movie became a super duper blockbuster.
However, that 1995 movie was not the first movie with that title. Same title ‘Dilwaale Dulhaniyaan Le Jaayenge’ was used in a movie of 1980, but this movie went unnoticed and had ended up as an obscure and rare movie of its time. I am not even aware if this movie was ever released, because I had never heard of this movie until I got my copy of Geet Kosh Volume-V (1971-1980) in the year 2015. After becoming aware of the existence of this movie, I was looking for the songs of this movie. The songs from this movie were not available easily. Somehow today morning when I was browsing for other songs I noticed that a few songs from this 1980 movie are now available on internet. So, today I am presenting the first song from this movie.
“Dilwaale Dulhaniyaan Le Jaayenge-1980” was directed by Rajinder Singh ‘Aatish’ for ‘Titoo Enterprises, Bombay’. It was a ‘social’ movie that was passed by Censor Board on 30.01.1980. The cast of this movie included Desh Gautam, Beena Shyam, Devender, Ashok Nag, Tariq Shah, Parvez Malik, Madhumita, Kavita Kiran, Vandana, Smita Raje, Brujgopal, Manju Bhatia, Nicky, Raja Duggal, Shekhar Sharma, Satinder Deepak, Hangama, Salil Arora, Master Vicky, Baby Shiba and others.
Geet Kosh lists five songs for this movie and the name of the lyricists included Naqsh Lyallpuri, Pandit Gauri Shankar ‘Saaqi’ and T.N. Pandey. However, while listing the individual songs and the lyricists’ name for them, Geet Kosh mentions ‘Saaqi’ as lyricist for four songs and for one song the name of the lyricist is not mentioned. The playback singers for this movie mentioned in Geet Kosh are Cuckoo Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Deepak Lamba, Kiran Jain, Savita Suman, Meenakshi and Sandhya. Music for this movie was composed by Kukkoo Singh.
Today’s song is a duet song sung by Cukkoo Singh and Deepak Lamba as per Geet Kosh. And if it is correct, then Cukkoo Singh appears to be a female composer and singer. Lyrics are by Gauri Shankar ‘Saaqi’.
The names of all the artistes included in this composition are new to me and as of now I do not have any more details about them. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
