I present a short song, ‘nainon ke darpan mein’ from Episode-58 of the TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988) which is rendered by Roopa Ganguly in the role of Draupadi/Sairandhri. The song is written by Pandit Narendra Sharma which is set to music by Rajkamal. The lyrics are short with sitar interludes being primarily played. Roopa Ganguly is a trained Rabindra Sangeet vocalist and a classical dancer.
After completing 12 years of exile in the forest, Pandavas have been spending one year of ‘agyaatvaas’ (anonymity) in the Matsya kingdom of King Virat. Yudhister joins as a courtier in the court of King Virat, Bheem taking the name, Vallabh becomes the chief cook. Arjun introduces himself as Brihannala and becomes the music and dance teacher to Prince Uttara. Nakul becomes the in-charge of horse stables and Sahadev, a cowherd. Draupadi assumes the name of Sairandhri and becomes the personal beautician to Queen Sudeshna. As the days of ‘agyaatvaas’ are coming to an end, Duryodhan and his brothers have not been able to locate Pandavas to break their ‘agyaatvaas’ which would have forced Pandavas to spend another 12 years in exile.
When Pandavas are on the verge of completing their ‘agyaatvaas’, Draupadi as Sairandhri who works as a beautician to Queen Sudeshana is in trouble. Keechak, the commander-in-chief of the Matsya Army and the sister of Queen Sudeshana is filled with lust for Sairandhri. He requests his sister, Sudeshana to send her to his room to serve him wine. As soon as Sairandhri enters his room to serve him the wine, Keechak tries to molest her by saying that she is his wine. She runs away from his room and reaches the court of King Virat where one of his courtiers, Yudhister is also present. Keechak also follows her in the court, holds her and then pushes her on the ground injuring her lips. Sairandhri pleads with King and his courtiers to punish Keechak for outraging her modesty. Instead, King Virat only reprimands Keechak for his shameful behaviour. Keechak, apart from his brother-in-law, is also the commander-in-chief of the army and has a tremendous hold on the army. Yudhister is also helpless because he has to remain anonymous.
Sairandhri goes back to Queen Sudeshna and takes a vow that her brother, Keechak would not be alive to see the next day’s sunrise. Immediately, she meets Bheem in his kitchen and tells him that if Keechak is not killed by the next day’s sunrise, she will not live to see the next day’s sunset. Caught in a bind of anonymity and the vow of Draupadi, Bheem plans a strategy in which he suggests Draupadi to pretend that she is in love with Keechak but she was afraid of her husbands to tell him the truth. He also said that tonight, she should invite Keechak to the dance hall in the pretext of meeting him. At that time, he will kill him.
The immediate context of the song under discussion is that in order to lure Keechak (Sharat Saxena), Sairandhri (Roopa Ganguly) starts singing the song in the garden of the palace. Keechak hears the song and meets her. He appreciates her singing proficiency. Sairandhri follows the plans as told by Bheem. They meet in the dance hall in the night where Bheem is sitting camouflaged as Sairandhri. Bheem kills Keechak thus fulfilling Draupadi’s vow.
The news of the killing of Keechak reaches Hastinapur. Karn says that except the six persons – Bhishma, Dronacharya, Balram, Duryodhan, Karn and Bheem, no one can kill Keechak. Except Bheem, all are in Hastinapur. So, it must be Bheem who would have killed Keechak. Duryodhan is happy that he got the clue as to where Pandavas are spending ‘agyaatvaas’ – the Matsya Kingdom.
