Greetings to Vinod Khanna on his 68th birthday. (6 october)
A commanding personality to contend with on screen. In whatever role he appears, he has the capacity to be the center of gravity in every scene. In the last scenes of ‘Mere Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971), appearing as the sardaar (leader) of a gang of dacoits, he is down and beaten, by Dharmendra. Even in that scene, he exudes strength, and gives the perception of being the stronger.
Born this day in Peshawar (now in Pakistan) in 1946, his family moved to Bombay when the partition happened. He grew up in Bombay, with some time of his teen years spent in Delhi. After completing his education, he got his first break in ‘Man Ka Meet’, a film produced and directed by Sunil Dutt under the banner of Ajanta Arts. The movie was intended to be the launch vehicle for Som Dutt, the younger brother of Sunil Dutt, and Vinod played the villain’s role. However, the debut was more effective for him, as he quickly progressed on to bigger roles and better films.
Most references to his career list ‘Hum Tum Aur Woh’ (1971) as his first film as the hero. However, his first film as the male lead is ‘Nateeja’ from 1969, in which he was paired opposite to Bindu. The film is produced by Jugal Kishore and is directed by Rajesh Nanda. Cast of actors also includes KN Singh, Jugal Kishore himself, Mehmood (Jr) besides others. The six songs in this film are written by Asad Bhopali and Saleem Sagar. However for this specific song, the lyricist is not identified in the Geet Kosh. Music is by Usha Khanna. Singing voices are of Mahendra Kapoor and Hemlata.
The manner of presenting the song on screen is so unlike the Vinod Khanna we know. In this song, he is trying to emulate the calisthenics of Jeetendra, and Shammi Kapoor. In the later part of the song, his mannerism and movements remind one of Shammi Kapoor, albeit nothing close to the original of course. But given that this was probably his second or third film only, I am sure he is simply trying his best to do what the director and the choreographer are telling him to do.
Quite a running-around-the-trees and romping-in-the-grass song. Apparently the first time he would have tried that. Sharing the screen with him is Bindu, also very much in the initial years of her career – a very fresh pairing so to say.
Listen and enjoy.
Song-Tum miley gham gaya(Nateeja)(1969) Singers-Mahendra Kapoor, Hemlata, MD-Usha Khanna
Lyrics
tum miley gham gaya
dard e dil thham gaya
tum miley gham gaya
dard e dil thham gaya
ab hamen zindagi ka mazaa aayega
ab hamen zindagi ka mazaa aayega
dil ko dil ka sahaara
jo milta rahaa
dil ko dil ka sahaara
jo milta raha
dekh lena muqaddar badal jaayega
dekh lena muqaddar badal jaayega
umr bhar saath rehne ki khhaa ke qasam
umr bhar saath rehne ki khhaa ke qasam
aaj aage badhaaye hain maine qadam
waqt kitne hi toofaan uthhaaye magar
waqt kitne hi toofaan uthhaaye magar
ab iraada na mera badal paayega
ab iraada na mera badal paayega
dil ko dil ka sahaara
jo milta rahaa
dil ko dil ka sahaara
jo milta raha
dekh lena muqaddar badal jaayega
dekh lena muqaddar badal jaayega
apne qadmon pe sar mera jhukne to do
apne qadmon pe sar mera jhukne to do
ek manzil pe duniya ko rukne to do
dekhna log poojenge aa ke tumhen
dekhna log poojenge aa ke tumhen
kal zamaana tumhari qasam khaayega
dekh lena muqaddar badal jaayega
tum miley gham gaya
dard e dil thham gaya
tum miley gham gaya
dard e dil tham gaya
ab hamen zindagi ka mazaa aayega
ab hamen zindagi ka mazaa aayega
aankhon aankhon mein honay do ahd e wafaa
aankhon aankhon mein honay do ahd e wafaa
door tak jaayegi dhadkanon ki sadaa
husn ki dhoom duniya mein ho jaayegi
husn ki dhoom duniya mein ho jaayegi
ishq saare zamaane pe chhaa jaayega
ishq saare zamaane pe chhaa jaayega
tum miley gham gaya
dard e dil tham gaya
tum miley gham gaya
dard e dil tham gaya
ab hamen zindagi ka mazaa aayega
ab hamen zindagi ka mazaa aayega
