Dam dam dam dam damroo baaje

“Sangram” (1965) was directed by Babubhai Mistry. Like “Parasmani” (1963), the earlier movie of Babubhai Mistry, this movie too had B grade superstars in it viz Dara Singh, Geetanjali, Randhawa, Maruti, Aruna Irani, King Kong etc.

“Parasmani” (1963) had music by a newcomer music director duo and that music went on to become surprise hit. “Sangram” (1965) too had music by a newcomer music duo and they too gave superb music but unfortunately the box office success of “Parasmani”(1963) could not be achieved this time and the music too failed to catch the imagination of music lovers.

Here is the song from “Sangram” (1965) that can be called the counterpart of Hansta hua nooraani chehra(Parasmani). The song, like the famous Parasmani song, is sung by Lata and Kamal Barot. Aish Kanwal is the lyricist. Music is composed by Lata Sattar.

The song is picturised as a dance song on Geetanjali and Swarna Kumari, with Aruna Irani also figuring in a masculine attire with beard as well. A comment on YT mentions that Geetanjali and Swarna Kumari were sisters and they were well known dancers in Tamil movies.

I wonder whether this lyricist Aish Kanwal is related to actress Peace Kanwal. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the matter.

This song, unlike Hansta hua nooraani chehra(Parasmani) has ended up becoming an extremely rare song. But make no mistake, this song is a masterclass. One only has to watch the picturisation a few times before this song begins to grow upon you.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

This song marks Nitin Shah’s 800th lyrics contribyution in the blog. He becomes the second lyrics contributor to achieve this barely belivable feat.

In his three years of association with this blog, Nitin Shah has shared songs on a wide variety of genres. His songs are normally from 1940s the 1960s, which also happens to be the era whose songs tend to get discussed the most in this blog. Nitin Shah, like Prakashchandra, the other member of the 800 club, has sent lots and lots of lyrics to me that are yet to see the light of the day. So we can be rest assured that his lyrics contributions will continue to appear in the blog for a long long time and he will continue to reach newer and bigger milestones with time.

Our contributors have their own ways of contributing lyrics and I am happy to have them without looking at the gift horse in the mouth. Nitin Shah’s contributions are mostly in the form of huge files containing lots of songs in a genre, viz songs from 1950 pt I, songs from 1950 pt II,, balance songs of Suraiyya etc. 🙂 The blog now has almost all Suraiyya songs and the big files of Suraiyya songs sent by Nitin Shah was a big help in this regard which meant that I only needed to look at theese files for Suraiyya songs which was a big time saver for me.

It can be easily seen that Nitin Shah spends unimaginable amount of time and effort in coming up with these huge lists of lyrics. It calls for great passion and enthusiasm. We mainly know him through his comments. We got to know him some more during the run up to the 10kth song of the blog. His introduction post, which I find extremely inspirational, revealed what a determined person he could be in his life. And it is his determination and never say die attitude that has enabled him to contribute so enthusiastically in the blog despite his active and busy professional life.

We are privileged to have Nitin Shah among the contributors of this blog. I hope that he will continue to be one of the major pillars of this blog as this musical bandwagon continues to march on. I take this opportunity to congratulate Nitin Shah. Here is hoping that he will continue to achieve many more musical feathers to his cap in due course.

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

dam dam dam dam damroo baaje
thhaap dol ki thaithaiya
re naachoon sajanva
chham chham chham
main to nachu balamva
thhai thhai thhai
main to naachoon sajanva

dam dam dam dam damru baaje
thhaap dol ki thaithaiya
re nachoon sajanva
chham chham chham
main to nachu balamva
thhai thhai thhai
main to naachoon sajanva

chaand ke rath par baith ke aayi
main kirnon ki raani

main kirnon ki rani odhkar aayi
chunariya dhaani
o o seep se jaise moti nikle
aisi meri jawaani

aisi meri jawaani
jaise chanchal raat suhaani
tann mann mein jal tarang dole
tere pyaar ki sargam boley

naachoon sajanva
main to nachoon balamva
main to nachoon sajanva

gore mukh par ghunghta daaloon
nainan mein hai laaj

nainan mein hai laaj
milenge aaj mujhe sartaaz
saat suron ke deep jalaake
kyun na nachoon aaj

kyun na naachoon aaj
mila hai ek anokha raaz
baazi apne haath rahegi
teri yaad jo saath rahegi

naachoon sajanva
main to naachoon balamva
main to nachoon sajanva

aaja tujhko dhoondh rahi hai
honthon ki muskaan

honthon ki muskaan liye
main tujh par hoon qurbaan
ho ho ek jhalak dikhla de
phir se
dil ke hain armaan

dil ke hain armaan sajanva
humko tu pehchaan
hum par tere pyaar ka jaadu
kaise aaj ho dil par kaabu

nachoon sajanva
main to naachoon balamva
main to naachoon sajanva

dam dam dam dam damroo baaje
thaap dol ki thaithaiya
re naachoon sajanva
chham chham chham
main to naachoon balamva
thhai thhai thhai
main to naachoon sajanva

Nitin ji,

Congratulations on completing the mark of 800 Lyrics.
I know how difficult it is to write lyrics of a song,I am simply awed with the speed of your Lyric writing in such a short period.
As rightly said by Atul ji,this is possible only with a firm committment and passion towards your work.
Thanks for providing us gems from the past and look forward to more such songs from the golden era.
