Greetings to Faryal on her birthday today (3rd November).

When she appeared on the film scene in 1965-66, the she was christened as the Sophia Loren of the Indian film industry. Considered to be one of the more daring cabaret dancers on screen, she actually expressed her extreme dislike for it, stating that primarily she is not a dancer, she never trained to be. But that is the industry and the type casting for you.

Born this day in far away Syria, where her father was working at that time. He had married an Arab lady there, and Faryal was born in Damascus. Later the family returned to India, and Faryal’s education happened in Simla and Bombay. For a brief time she worked as an air hostess with Air India. But the lure of the silver screen took her to S Mukherji’s Filmalya School of Acting. Graduating from this place, she was offered her first role opposite to Shashi Kapoor in ‘Biraadari’. The film was released in 1966, and turned out to be a box office disaster. Although it was the first film that signed up for, it was not the first film that got released. In 1965, she appeared as the leading lady opposite to Pradeep Kumar in ‘Zindagi Aur Maut’. This film got released before ‘Biraadari’, and did not fare too badly on the box office.

Then 1967 came, and with it came ‘Jewel Thief’ directed by Vijay Anand. With a director like him, one does not say no. Faryal got inducted into the gangster team of Ashok Kumar, and also appeared as one of the dancers in the cabaret song. Voila, she became an ‘oomph girl’ of the industry overnight. In an interview in 1973, she had stated, “. . . in reality I have never learnt dancing. I don’t even like dancing; I rather hate it”. She was reluctant to accept similar offers at first, being afraid that she would be typecast. But then realizing that there were ten others ready to replace her, if she declined. And so, one role followed another, eventually reaching up to the bath tub scene in ‘Apradh’ (1972). . . and her image was cast.

Although she did not remain long with the films. Her last appearance was in the 1984 film ‘Gold Medal’, after which she left the industry for good. There does not seem to be much information available about her, except one reference in Wikipedia, which states that she got married and moved to Israel. Maybe other knowledgeable friends and readers will add more information about her after she stopped acting in films.

This song is from the 1968 film ‘Fareb’. Apparently a film that would have been started earlier, i.e. along with or even before the ‘Jewel Thief’, but got released later. In this film, Faryal plays the lead role opposite to Dev Kumar. The film is produced under the banner of Shri Om Productions, and is directed by Jugal Kishore. The cast of actors includes Faryal, Dev Kumar, Maruti, Kundan, Sushma, Bela Bose, NA Ansari, Rajan Haksar, Rahul, Heeralal, Darshan, Shyam, Desai, Nadir, Madhu Apte, and Sajan etc. The seven songs in this film are written by Asad Bhopali and Javed Anwar. Music is by Usha Khanna. Regulars will recognize that the lyricist Javed Anwar is actually a team of two song writers – Javed being the pen name of Manohar Lal Khanna, father of Usha Khanna, and Anwar is the pseudonym for Raahil Gorakhpuri. This name appears in some films of that era. Incidentally this song is written by Asad Bhopali.

A poignant song of remembrance. It features Faryal in the most un-‘oomph girl’ persona, very traditional appearance, pining for her loved one who seems to have deserted her. And yet, the strings of love pull strongly and she hopes against hope. And the poet obliges with the lines

wo nahin aaye wo naa aayenge
ye samajh kar bhi intezaar kiya

That I waited
Even beyond the realization
That he is gone and will not return
Trust the poet to bring up a thought that puts the mind in a contemplative mood.

Listen and enjoy.

Song-Dil ne ik bewafa se pyaar kiya (Fareb)(1968) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Asad Bhopali, MD-Usha Khanna

Lyrics

hum chup hain
is liye ke
khataa ki hai pyaar ki
aankhon ko dee gaye hain sazaa
intezaar ki

dil ne ik bewafaa se
pyaar kiya
pyaar kiya
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya
haaye
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya
dil ne ik bewafaa se pyaar kiya
pyaar kiya
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya
haaye
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya

wo nahin aaye wo naa aayenge
wo nahin aaye wo naa aayenge
wo nahin aaye wo naa aayenge
naa aayenge
ye samajh kar bhi intezaar kiya
haaye
ye samajh kar bhi intezaar kiya
dil ne ik bewafaa se pyaar kiya
pyaar kiya
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya
haaye
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya

hum samajhte rahe jisey apna
hum samajhte rahe jisey apna aa
hum samajhte rahe jisey apna
haaye apna
us ne gairon pe dil nissar kiya
haaye ae
us ne gairon pe dil nissar kiya
dil ne ik bewafaa se pyaar kiya
pyaar kiya
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya
haaye ae
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya

aaj beete dinon ki yaadon ne
aaj beete dinon ki yaadon ne ae
aaj beete dinon ki yaadon ne
haaye yaadon ne
aur bhi humko beqaraar kiya
haaye ae
aur bhi humko beqaraar kiya
dil ne ik bewafaa se pyaar kiya
pyaar kiya
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya
haaye ae
jhoothe waadon pe aitbaar kiya

———————————————–
