LOST AND FOUND- GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS….song No.4
——————————————————–

As said earlier, Hindi film industry is like an ocean. From 1931 till today, thousands of people must have worked in it. One estimate says, from 1931 to 2000, some 7000 actors alone have worked in Talkie films, not counting other categories of artists. Almost 12000 censored films were made. All this is fine, except that no historical records have been kept about the films or its music. Due to this, many controversies have cropped up about actors/singers/songs mainly. Those people who dig up old documents, secure interviews of old artistes and record these for future references are doing a pioneering work. Those who write books, at times do not care to cross check the information they provide in their books, thereby inviting controversies.

As a student of Hindi films and music, I too have read several books and I am yet to come across a book without an ‘error or wrong information’. This field is vast and mistakes are bound to take place. It does not underemine the author’s knowledge or efforts. In this field, everyday new proofs are found and myths are busted. However, due to poor channels of communications or poor availability of reference books, new students do not get the right information. Additionally wrong information provided on few internet sites and in a few books often gets viral and continue to mislead people.

I am a member of at least 20 groups on Facebook and I find that new entrants and new enthusiasts get lot of misleading information. There are various riddles and controversies in this field which continue to promote discussion on internet every now and then. Few popular riddles are-

1. Who sang ‘ Bharat ki ek sannari ki’ in Ramrajya-43 ?
2. Who sang ‘Dilli se aaya bhai Tingu’ from Ek thi ladki-49 ?
3. Whether Shashi kapoor acted as child star in over 20 films ?
4. Was singer khursheed same as actress Shehla ?
5. Are composer Aziz khan and Aziz Hindi one person ?
6. Is Arjun,Hero of ‘Malhar’-51 same as composer C.Arjun ?
7. Did hafiz Khan Mastana try to poison G M Durani ?
8. Is khan Mastana and Hafiz Khan of ‘Zeenat’-45 same person ?
9. Is Rattanbai-singer actress same as Ratanbai-mother of Shobhana Samarth ?

This is only a trailer of different riddles. Some riddles get solved after a few years, when new evidence comes up, but due to our poor knowledge reservoirs, it does not reach all the people and same questions raise their heads again and again as riddles.

Today’s song is also connected to a riddle. It song is from a film ‘ Bahar’-40s and the composer of this film is Aziz Khan-same person who is in the riddle’ No. 5 above. In the 40s and 50s, there were two names Aziz khan and Aziz Hindi as composers, both credited with different films to them.

Ustaad Waheed Khan was a well known and respected player of Sitar and Surbahar. His place in the Etawah Gharana was high up. He had 3 sons. Bande Hassan, Hafiz Khan and Aziz Khan. Waheed Khan was very keen that his sons should continue his profession, earn a name and shine in classical music of Etawah Gharana. He thought working for music in films was below their dignity and a matter of shame. Bande Hassan specialised in vocal music and became a famous qawwali exponent. Second son Hafiz Khan, after initial training in classical music turned to film singing, without his father’s knowledge. Not only that, he also adopted the pen name of Mastana-conferred on him by composer Meer Sahib- to hide his identity from his father. The third son Aziz Khan also went the film way, using the name Aziz Hindi sometimes.

Though Aziz Khan did not continue his family profession, he ensured that his son Pervez took training and became an International Sitarist, settling in USA. Even the son of Pervez- Shakir became a famous Sitarist. he continues the Etawah gharana tradition now.

A senior RMIM member Mr. Jayraman reported in 2008 that he had traced and found and met the only son of Hafiz Khan Mastana, in Mahim,Mumbai. His name was Zaheer aka Alla Rakha. The son confirmed all the above facts and also that Aziz Khan was Aziz Hindi.

Though this fact was confirmed, books like ‘ Dhunon ki yatra’ (Pankaj Raag) mentioned Aziz Khan and Aziz Hindi as two different persons, though the book was published in 2006. He can not be blamed for this, however. But since it is mentioned in a book , for many readers this wrong information is ‘authentic’ and this is quoted by many in their writings. This is because the findings of mr. Jayaraman did not get wide enough publicity.

Coming to today’s song “Panja chhaka khel re manwa” by Zohrabai, a note in HFGKosh says that this same song was later on included in the film “Pandit ji”(1946), for which the composer was again Aziz Khan only . However, after checking I find that the Record numbers of song of Bahar and Pandit ji are different. This gives room to think that, may be, only the mukhda is same and the song may be different or even the tune may be different. Obviously Zohrabai must have sung again and recorded the song for “Pandit ji”(1946). I could not get this song, so I can not say with conviction anything. ( This is yet one more riddle here !)

Whatever it is,the Bahar song is very good. Let us enjoy it for now…

Atulji,
Ye Arunji ka 800th song nahin hai. I know it’s just a typo. Kindly correct it.
We are eagerly waiting for his 400th post. 🙂
Regards
Khyati

Arunji,
This song reminds me of Taash ke baawan patte panje chhakke satte…of Tamanna-69.
Can you explain what does the “panja chhakka khel re manwa” means in this song?
Thanks
Khyati

Khyati ji,

Panja- chhakka is a type of ‘ single figure matka’ popularised by Ratan khatri in Bombay or his predecessors. This is a type of Gambling. This is called ” aakda ” in Bombay slang.

Got it. Thank you Arunji.

Arunji,
Out of the 9 riddles you have mentioned some you have addressed sufficiently earlier – such as riddle no. 3, 4, 6 and 9. How about the others? That brings me to my point again, how do we Google your encyclopaedia?

AK

AK ji,
Thanks for your comments.
1) After shri Dhananjay Nanivadekar,a senior RMIM member from US,talked to Yeshwant Buwa Joshi ( before Joshi’s death) and confirmed that he was one of the singers,it is now confirmed that Yeshwant Joshi sang for Madhusudan Bhatt (Lav) and Yeshwant Nikam sang for himself as Kush.
2) I have proved that it was Binota Chakravarty nee Vinata Amladi, who has sung this song, based on her interview, published in Listener’s Bulletin.
5) Clarified in the above article that Aziz Khan and Aziz Hindi were ONE person.
7) As per Rajnikumar Pandya ji’s book ” Aap ki Parchhaiyan” gave the interview of Durrani,it was proved to be a fact.
8) They were 2 separate persons has been proved in 2008 itself.

About your other point,as i said, you will have to wait for some more time.
Thanks.

Arun Sir,
With so much of knowledge, material and facts at hand, I honestly feel you should publish a book to clear so many of these anomalies.

Regards
mahesh

Mahesh ji,

Thanks for your feelings and appreciation, which I value very much.

Arun Sir,
I too endorse the request of Mahesh ji that your entire storehouse of music should be made available in the form of a book for the knowledge and enjoyment of other lovers of HFM.
The sooner, the better.
Kindly oblige your fans.
Profound regards,
Avadh Lal

Avadh Lal ji,

Thanks for your feelings and appreciation.
I had considered this option, but i came to a conclusion that making information available on Internet can make it reach more people throughout the world,at a click. It is paperless, helping environment and this is the eternal medium for future.

Arunji,
Thanks a lot. On 8 again. I believe Hafeez Khan of Lakeerein is definitely different from Khan Mastana. I had a simple rule – if it was spelled with ‘ee’, it was different, and if it was spelled with ‘i’, they were the same persons. Now that is not the case. Can you give us the names of films again please in which Hafiz Khan as MD was Khan Mastana, and in which not?

AK

Please give me some time.
-AD

Hafiz khan was MD for Zeenat-45,Humjoli-46,meherbani-50,Lakeeren-54 and Mera Salaam-57.
Hafiz khan Mastana was MD for-
1940- Wasiyat,Virginia
41- Akela, Circus ki sundari,Mere saajan
42- muqabala,Raja rani
43- Badalati Duniya,Raahgir,Raaja,Talaash
44- Badmash,Shararat,Taxi Driver
45- Neelam,Veer kunal
46-Air Mail,Bhedi dushman,Main awara or jeewan Swapna
47- Bhanwar, Bhool na jaanaa
48- Aaj ka Farhaad
49- Roop Basant
52- Jamane ki hawa

Hafiz Khan> apart from the films mentioned by Arunji there was another movie Sharif Daku-60; Watan-54;
Quiz ka dor hai to ye lijiye bataaye? #Which song is the smallest and has only 4 number of lines and which became very popular in the golden period. Any one maai ka laal?

Rafi saab’s last recorded title song from Aas Pass ?

Is it Abhi to main jawan hoon ? (Lata)

Arunji,
Thanks a lot again. (Hafiz) Khan Mastana and Hafeez Khan. As I look up the HFGK, there is no same name confusion here. The names are written distinctly as above. So there does not seem to be any movie in which MD is only mentioned as Hafiz Khan or Hafeez Khan for Khan Mastana.

Bharat ke ek sanari ki hum katha sunaate hain. The story becomes more complex. I have sent you a mail.

AK

Arun ji,

Thanks yet once again for another post full of insights and clarifications.

I fully endorse Avadh Lal ji request for a book. Now this may be an eBook on the internet. It will be wonderful if all these information filled write ups are compiled together, and posted online as eBook.

AK ji,
The confusion regarding Hafeez Khan and Hafiz Khan Mastana is compounded by the fact that an important book – ‘Dhunon Ki Yatra’ by Pankaj Raag, has rolled together these two personalities into a single article, presenting them as a single persona. The interwining of their life stories is confusing, and it took Arun ji’s diligent digging to calrify.

Rgds
Sudhir

Arunji, Sudhirji
Even at the cost of repetition, could you please confirm that Hafeez Khan of Zeenat and Lakeerein are the same person.

Yes.

Quiz master kahan hai ?
