“Aurat Ka Pyaar”(1933) was the first movie produced under the banner of East India Films Company, Calcutta. This “social” movie was directed by A R Kardar and it has Mukhtar Begam, Anwari, Bachan, S A Athar, Mazhar Khan, Pahalwan, Abdul Sattar, Gul Hamid etc in it.

This movie had ten songs in it according to HFGK and the details of their singers and lyricists are not known according to HFGK.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is made available on Surjit Singh Ji’s site by famous music collector Mr Girdharilal Vishwakarma. He mentions this song as sung by Mukhtar Begam, who acted in this movie. So this makes it an actor-singer song.

When I went through the lyrics of this song, I found that the name “Hashr” is mentioned in the lyrics. Mentioning their names somewhere in their poems was a standard practice adopted by Indian poets. I am happy that it was done here because that has given us a way of finding out the lyricist. Agha Hashr Kashmiri is mentioned as the scriptwriter of this movie. So it is almost certain that it is he who has penned the lyrics of this song.

Mushtaq Ahmad composed the music of this song.

Hindi movie songs of those days were sung in the manner of Classical songs. This song is very much a classical song and it lasts nearly as long (more than nine minutes long).

Here is this wonderful gem of a song from one of the earliest Hindi talkie movies.

It seems true that Agha Hashra Kashmiri has written this song, particularly when his name as writer is appearing in the last lines of the song. I’m keeping the booklet of the film but unfortunately, since its songs are appearin in Urdu, I could not spot the writer’s name in the text of songs as I’m not able to read Urdu script. I got translated into Hindi, only the opening lines of every song and presented in GK-1.
However, here I recall my meeting with the director of the film viz. A.R.Kardar (in 1987 at his residence) who specifically confirmed that all songs of the film were written by Agha Hashra Kashmiri.

Yet, I shall now try to spot the name of the song writer if appearing in the last lines of other songs of the film which was customary in those days.

Thanks a lot for confirmation that Agha Hashr Kashmiri is the lyricist.

A beautiful ghazal (in Raag Darbari). This has also been sung by Tina Sani (Pakistani singer) in a similar tune.

In most of the Plays, silent and talkies in which Mukhtar Begum acted and sang, Agha Hashra Kashimiri was story, screen play and or song writer. Agha Hashra Kashmiri marrried Mukhtar Begum in 193O. However their marrriage was shortlived as, Agha Hashra Kashmiri died in 1935.

Many many thanks for having dug out such a beautiful gem of a ghazal! Really enjoyable singing in the classical style.

May I suggest a few changes in the text as I have heard it? I have written the ghazal here in devnagri script:

The first and third couplets in the roman text may need these minor corrections.

She also sang >arre main to lut gai aake tere baag me maali in the same movie
There was another Mukhtaq Ahmed Bareliwale as MD>Sultana-34 Generally the poets name is added in the last verse’s first line’s end
Is he connected with Agha Jani Kashmiri
He penned basant ritu aai aai, prem ki ho jai-jai, prem nagar me banaaungi ghar main taj ke ghar sansaar, tadapat beete din raina>>all from Chandidas-34 and wo muqaddar na raha aur wo zamana na raha from Shirin Farhad-31
