I present a short song, ‘ab aayee barkha bahaar sajnee’ from the film, ‘Sangeet Samrat Tansen, (1962). The song is rendered by Mohammed Rafi who sings for Bharat Bhushan in the role of Tansen. The song ends with aalaaps and sargam rendered by Manna Dey who sings for M Kumar in the role of Swami Haridas.
The song is not listed in HFGC probably because being a short duration of about 2 minutes, the gramophone record of the song was not released. The song is not included in the LP record of the film. SAREGAMA has also not released the mp3 clip of this song. So, the only source of the song is from the sound track of the film.
The background of this song is that on invitation from Shahenshah Akbar (S N Tripathi), Tansen (Bharat Bhushan) has joined as the court singer and as one of the navratnas of Akbar’s court. After hearing the first song rendered by Tansen in the court, Akbar is very much impressed. On enquiry from Akbar, Tansen reveals that Swami Haridas has been his Guru who has taught him dhrupad singing. Akbar wishes to invite Swami Haridas in his court for singing. However, Tansen tells him that his Guru does not sing outside the temple and he sings only when God wants him to sing. Akbar is now more curious to listen to the singing of Swami Haridas. Akbar decides to accompany Tansen incognito to meet Swami Haridas in Vrindavan.
Days pass but Akbar does not get an opportunity to hear the singing of Swami Haridas. He expresses his disappointment to Tansen at which point, he assures him that he knows how to make his Guru sing. With this, Tansen starts singing the song under discussion. Swami Haridas hears the song and his expressions show some kind of uneasiness. When Tansen comes to the singing the last of the first antara of the song, Swami Haridas gets up and starts singing aalaaps and sargam. He walks toward Tansen and reprimands him for losing his singing quality. Tansen agrees and says that ever since his beloved Hansa (Anita Guha) has left him without the trace of her whereabouts, his singing has been affected. Swami Haridas walks away from Tansen without giving his response and goes to his temple. He starts singing a bandish based on Raag Malkauns, sudh bisar gayee aaj apne gunan ki. Tansen joins in singing with him. Akbar is now more than satisfied that at last he has got the opportunity to witness the singing of Swami Haridas, that too with Tansen.
