The Many Colors of Love #24 – Declarations of Love

And so wrote the scribe

suno suno, arre suno suno
o bhaiyo behnon
o maggan bhai, chhaggan bhai
saambhro re saambhro
o raaghopa o dhindhopa
aai jaa o aai jaa
o karnal singh
o jarnal singh
o tusi wi suno paape
rafta rafta dekho aankh meri ladi hai. . . .

Ha, the compulsive emotions of the heart. When it sprouts inside, and then, when even an iota of acceptance and response gets expressed from the other person, the delight inside the heart simply cannot be contained. It overflows. The happiness so overtakes the self that there is a very urgent urge to share this with the entire world. The compulsion is to go to the top of the nearest and the tallest structure, be that a building or a water tank 🙂 or a construction crane :D, and shout this wonderful news to the entire world – literally shouting it out from the rooftops. And the declarations is that I am in love and the person I love also loves me.

The first time this emotion expresses inside, it so fills up the being that the person is frantically seeking ways to express it and to share it with everyone. It is like a bottle of soda that is just so full of bursting energy that it is eager and raring to simply rush out, given even a tiny chance to escape, express itself. All of us are very familiar with what happens, when you shake a bottle of soda and then try to open it. No matter how much careful you are, the fizz is simply going to rocket out of the bottle, as soon as a little opening is offered. And for those who have experienced this feeling, I am sure they will vouch and stand testimony that when the first love is expressed and accepted, it the same feeling of a bottle of soda under bubbling pressure, multiplied many times over. Gosh, what a lasting feeling it is, it continues to keep the mind and the heart overflowing, on and on and on. Just think back to the first time it happened with you. . . 😉

Of course, with the amount of music that we have in Indian films, it is only natural that this (and all other emotions) is expressed through songs. The song listed at the start of this article is one of the well known songs for this expression. Turning the clock back a little, I present this wonderful rum-pum-pum song from 1958. The film is ‘Akaashpari’. Produced under the banner of Delight Pictures, it is directed by Mohan Sinha. The music is by Inaayat Ali and the lyrics are from the pen of Anjum Pilibhiti. The cast of actors includes Mahipal, Kusum Pradhan, Maruti, Ram Singh, Kamal, Krishna Kumari, Sabita Chatterjee, Kanchanmala, Bhagwan Sinha, Dubey, Nargis Nandini, Gaurang, Moosa, and Ramlal etc.

The singing voices are those of GM Durrani and Faiyyaaz Mohammed. Ah yes, this is an all male duet. Apparently, it is two love struck young men who are pursuing their intended rose flowers in the heart. In the declarations of their emotions and intentions, they are quite much in unison. But beyond that, one can make out that one of them is more reserved and reticent, as we can make out from the lines being sung. So whereas one of them (in the voice of GM Durrani) maintains that

chup rehna bhi achhaa hai
kuchh kehna bhi achhaa hai

the second pursuer is not satisfied with this stand, and he openly is declaring (in the voice of Faiyyaaz Mohammed)

chup nahin rahenge hum
itna kahenge hum

This pattern continues through the three stanzas of the song, as the first friend expresses something, and then the second friend, being more audacious, expresses a feeling that is a few notches more demanding. Seeing the names in the list of actors, my intuition is that the song may be performed on screen by Mahipal and Maruti – Mahipal being the reticent pursuer and Maruti being the more demanding of the two. Just a guess, I may be wrong.

As far as the details of this film, our dear Arun ji has written in detail about this film, its history in his article on the song of this film “Ho Gaye Barbaad Hum Achhaa Hua” . As is his forte, the article is full of information from his personal notes, that is not available elsewhere.

And so, a representation of the declarations of love, from the golden era of Hindi film music. Listen and enjoy.
