I am presenting the 16th and probably the last song from ‘Sangeet Samrat Tansen’ (1962). It is a qawwali song, ‘tu hai ke naheen hai’ written by Shailendra. The qawwali is rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey who sings for Prem Sagar (not to be confused with Ramanand Sagar’s son of the same name) and Bharat Bhushan, respectively.
Surprisingly, this qawwali, which I regard is of a high standard, both in terms of lyrics and the renditions, has remained on the back burner probably due to the popularity of other classical and semi-classical songs from the film. While watching the film, I felt that the qawwali was inserted in the film like an ‘item number’. Historically, Tansen was known as a vocalist and instrumentalist of Hindustani classical music with dhrupad singing as his specialty. Perhaps, the story writer took the cinematic liberty of Tansen rendering a qawwali because during his childhood, he was associated with Mohammed Ghous of Gwalior, a Sufi Saint.
Another surprise was that the gramophone records of this qawwali was not released. Even in the later stage, the LP of the film’s song did not have this qawwali and SAREGAMA did not release this qawwali as a mp3 clip. It is also not listed in HFGK. Fortunately, this qawwali is available in full in a video clip.
The background to this qawwali song (in the film, it is mentioned as Irani music) is that Tansen (Bharat Bhushan), Hansa (Anita Guha) and Sheikhu (Pram Sagar) have been the students of Mohammed Ghous (David) in Gwalior. Tansen has gone to Vrindavan to become the student of Swami Haridas (M Kumar) to get trained in dhrupad style of singing. Hansa has been the childhood friend of Tansen and he has promised Hansa that after the completion of his training in Vrindavan, they will get married. In the absence of Tansen, Sheikhu has been wooing Hansa to get married to him. However, each occasion, she has been spurning his offer. At last, Sheikhu offers Hansa that there would be a musical jugalbandi between Tansen and him in the genre of Irani music knowing very well that Tansen is not well-versed with the Irani music. The one who wins gets married to her. Hansa accepts the bet under the assumption that a trained vocalist like Tansen can win in any type of jugalbandi.
Tansen returns to Gwalior after completion of his musical training in Vrindavan and meets Hansa. At this point, she tells him about the bet she has accepted from Sheikhu. At first, Tansen is surprised as he has not studied the Irani music. But he assures her that since she has reposed faith in him to win the jugalbandi, he is confident of winning the bet for her. And Tansen wins the bet from Sheikhu as the latter walks out of the jugalbandi when Tansen is singing the last part of the qawwali.
There are two more songs which are listed in HFGK but without any details as to the singer, the lyricist and the gramophone record numbers. The two songs are:
1. hmd ke laayak hai tu ae jul jalaal, ye jahaan hai teree kudrat kaa kamaal.
2. aali dekho bhor bhai log jaage pawan jaage panchhi jaage.
These two songs are not available on the VCD of the film. For the time being, we can say that all the availble 16 songs have been covered on the Blog.
