A voice that so effortlessly touched the depths of poignancy as no one else could. It was also the same voice that flitted with rapid rhythms to reach an apex exuberance. And in both flavors, this voice simply gets into the heart and the songs come so easily to the lips.
Remembering Geeta Dutt (nee Roy) on the anniversary of her birth (23rd November).
Be it the craving entreaties of “Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Lagaa Lo” (‘Pyaasa’, 1957), or the intense expressions of first love in “Akhiyaan Bhool Gayin Hain Sona” (‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’, 1959). Or be it the depths of dejected resignation with “Mera Sunder Sapna Beet Gaya” (‘Do Bhai’, 1947), juxtaposed against the cheerful exuberance of “Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo”(‘Howrah Bridge’, 1958). Or the unbridled expression of desires in “Naa Jaao Sainyaan Chhuda Ke Bainyyaan”(‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’, 1962) or the lilting “Babuji Dheere Chalna” (‘Aar Paar’, 1954). Be it the soft expressions of endearment in “Koi Chupke Se Aa Ke” (‘Anubhav’, 1972) or the same fondness of first love excitingly expressed in “Ae Dil Mujhe Bataa De” (‘Bhai Bhai’, 1956). Or be it the depths of sorrow expressed in “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Hasee Sitam’ (‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, 1959) contrasted with the lofty cheer ensconced in “Ye Kaun Aaya Ke Mere Dil Ki Duniya Mein Bahaar Aayi” (‘Baazi’, 1951). Be it the playful mischief in “Jhoome Re Kali Bhanwraa Ulajh Gaya Kaanton Mein” (‘Naukri’, 1954) or the soulful promises of forever in “Na Ye Chaand Hoga Na Taare Rahenge” (‘Shart’, 1954). The softness, the stupor, the tingling tinkle rides hand in hand with the pathos and imploring sadness. A voice that carries so many memories of a multitude of flavors.
In 1950, when Bulo C Rani called upon her to sing his creations in ‘Jogan’, it was the first real trial of her singing dexterity. She has rendered 12 songs in this film that have become timeless treasures – “Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol Re Tohe Piya Milenge”, “Mat Jaa Mat Jaa Mat Jaa Jogi”, “Main To Girhdar Ke Ghar Jaaun “ are bhajans so distinctively rendered by her. Then in 1952, when she sang under the music direction of Hemant Kumar in ‘Anand Matth’, the beauty of Jaidev’s “Jai Jagdish Hare” was taken to the levels that simply cannot be improved upon.
I present this wonderful memory from 1961, a bhajan that used to be heard quite often on the radio waves, and has been playing in the oblivion for a long time now. The film is ‘Kaanch Ki Gudiya’. Produced under the banner of Roshini Films, it is directed by HS Rawail. The main cast of actors includes Manoj Kumar, Saeeda Khan, Leela Chitnis, Tarun Bose, Mumtaz Begum, Krishan Dhawan, Manorama, Iftikhar, Dulari, Jagdish Raj, Soda Water, Keshto Mukherjee, Leela Mishra, Shobha Khote, Randhir, Devika, Kundan, Keshav, Ramnath, Rajrani, Ridku etc. The film has 6 songs, all written by Shailendra. The music is by Suhrid Kar. A long time assistant to SD Burman, this is the only one film that Suhrid Kar has directed for music as an independent music director.
The words, the music and the voice so singularly capture the attention and imagination – that is what makes this bhajan a treasure. Lost for so many years, it is now available online. The link is in the voice, that tugs at the strings of the heart.
