Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 9

A small child’s memory is so retentive, just like a sponge. I am sure other friends and listeners who lived by the music broadcast on the radio, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, would surely remember this fabulous Bhojpuri song. It is one of those unforgettable memories that will continue to play in the minds forever. It is just the way that Rafi Sb has sung this, makes it so endearing. The feeling is almost as if someone is tickling.
The film is ‘Naihar Chhootal Jaaye’ from 1964. This is a production from the banner of Bhojpur Films, and is directed by Devendra. The cast of actors is very familiar – Kumkum, Deven Verma, Asit Sen, Badri Prasad, Mishra, Anwar, Radheshyam, Leela Mishra, Sadhana Khote, Beer Sakhuja, Gopal, Rama Shankar, Amal Sen, M Bihari, Diwedi, Baban, Siromani, Neelima, Reshma, Rehana, Sheeli, Madhu, and Daya Devi etc. There are six songs in this film, all written by Shailendra. The music is from the baton of the incomparable Jaidev, so much at home in this folk milieu. The other songs of this film are also not too unfamiliar, and some of them also played on the radio during those years. But of course, this gem is simply the best.
The words, the music and the rendering paint such an endearing picture of the village scene – a young country boy, walking through the farmlands, has recently had his heart taken by a young damsel, the season of rains is nigh, and what else but a song comes to the lips of this country boy. A song that tells of the ‘kasak masak’ – the pulling and straining of the strings of the heart that is happening to him now. Rafi Sb has rendered this lovely folk creation with such abandon. We may try to capture all the words and the alaap and the murki’s in text, but that is so incomplete a presentation. The finer nuances can never be captured in text, can only be enjoyed by listening. The so many tiny little nuances that are rendered in the spoken word so beautifully represent the emotions of happiness, expectations, descriptions of natural surroundings – oh it is so captivating. The prancing calves of the deer and the music of koyal in the trees – it is almost as if it is happening right in front of our eyes.
A wonderful song, a delightful memory. Listen and enjoy.

This song also has a version sung by Asha Bhosle. This version is very rare to get hold of. The version sung by Rafi Sb is more popular and easily accessible. Our dear friend Arvinder ji, has been after my life to upload this song, for many months now; and is almost quite upset with me that I have not fulfilled his request so far.
Ah but, all waits must come to an end sometime. I am uploading this Asha Bhosle version today, and also updating this post to include this version. The second antaraa in the two versions is different, and I have added the lyrics for the different 2nd antaraa also to this post.
Listen to this heretofore not easily accessible song. I am sure you will like it equally well.
