‘Chhaila Babu-1977’ may not be in the list of my most favorite films or films that brings back memories. But, yes, a few songs from this film do trigger some memories.

Only one from this movie has been discussed on our blog so far and that one song was discussed on 08.12.2008, more than Six years back. I thought about getting this writeup posted on 08th December 2014, exactly six years later, but that was not to be.

As we generally try and combine posts with some special occasions or anniversaries of the film personalities, this is being posted today (29 december 2014) to mark the birth anniversary of Superstar Rajesh Khanna.

‘Chhaila Babu – 1977’ was Produced by Shomu Mukherjee and Directed by Joy Mukherjee. It was a ‘suspense thriller’. It had Rajesh Khanna in the title role of ‘Chhaila Babu’, and he was accompanied by Zeenat Aman, Asrani, Ranjeet, Padma Khanna, Achala Sachdev, Macmohan, P.Jairaj, Ravindra Kapoor and Om Shivpuri (who, according to my memory played the villain in this film).

Music of this film was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal (and not by RDB as one would assume by its songs and as noted by ATUL ji while discussing the first song “Yaar dildaar tujhe kaisa chaahiye” from this film on our blog). I would like to mention that many would find today’s song similar to RDB genre of songs of that era.

Lyrics of all songs for this film ‘CHHAILA BABU-1977’ are by ANAND BAKSHI.

I watched this film in my childhood with my parents and do not remember it now.

But I can recollect a few things about this movie which are in my vague memory.

There is one scene in the film – the climax scene -where Rajesh Khanna is trapped in a ‘bhool bhulaiyya’ , which have all mirrors on its walls and he could not locate where exactly the villain is, but finally he succeeded (as only he can 🙂 ) and shoots the real ‘Scorpion’ there.

A brief info is available on Wikipedia about this film at this link.

Wikipedia mentions this film as a ‘super hit’. Such information need to be taken with some pinch of salt, though. I find that many films of Rajesh Khanna, which I thought were average/or flops, are now described as Hits and Super Hits on ‘wiki’.

But I do agree with Atul ji “that many great Rajesh Khanna movies came about in 1980s when he was no longer a superstar, and these movies did not succeed”

Coming to this song from the film it is picturised at a club location where Rajesh Khanna is playing the drummer and lip syncing in Kishore’s voice, while Padma Khanna is lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Also seen are Leena Das, Zeenat Amaan, Om Shivpuri, Ranjeet, Mac Mohan, Man Mohan and others.

So here is this song which used to be frequently heard on Radio in those days.

And keeping with the celebration mood, holiday mood, New Year mood, and party mood … Enjoy the song, the style – the mannerisms of the First ever real Superstar of the Hindi Cinema – Rajesh Khanna.

@ Peevesie’s Mom ji – you are not late, the birth anniversary of the Superstar is today only.
And yes you have rightly identified Leena Das.
As far as RK’s uneasy posture … ye to unka style hai na ..
