Mention of RK Films brings to mind the unbroken partnership of 22 long years between the music director duo of Shankar Jaikishan and the songwriters Shialnedra and Hasrat Jaipuri. Starting from ‘Barsaat’ in 1949, and all the way up to ‘Mera Naam Joker’ in 1971, this quartet ruled the music and songs at RK Films, collaborating for every RK film produced during this period (with the exception of Shailendra, who passed away in 1966).
Remembering Hasrat Jaipuri on the anniversary of his birth today (15th April).
Hasrat was born Iqbal Husain, in 1922 in Jaipur. His grandfather, Fida Husain, played an important role in his education, ensuring that the young Iqbal got training in Urdu and Persian, besides the regular curriculum at the school. In 1940, when he was 18, he came to Bombay. His first employment was with the local bus service as a conductor. He had started writing poetry while he was at school. In Bombay, he would participate at the local ‘mushairas’ whenever he could. At one such gathering, he met with Prithviraj Kapoor, who was impressed with his poetical artistry. He introduced the young man to his son, Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor was planning the film ‘Barsaat’ at that time. He took Iqbal, now known more popularly by his pen name – Hasrat, on board for this film. Two songs by him were included in the film – “Jiya Beqaraar Hai, Chhai Bahaar Hai” and “Chhod Gaye Baalam, Mujhe Haaye Akela Chhod Gaye”. Thus was launched the career of Hasrat Jaipuri, who continued to write for Hindi films all the way till 1999, the year he passed away.
This song is from the 1966 film ‘Sher Afghan’. As per records, this is the last film of the music director duo Husnlal Bhagatram. After this film, the two parted company, with Husnlal migrating to Delhi. This film is the only one in which Hasrat Jaipuri has written all the lyrics for the music of this duo. They had come together earlier in the 1961 film ‘Apsara’, but in that film, there were three lyricists (GS Nepali and Qamar Jalaalabaadi, besides Hasrat), and Hasrat Jaipuri wrote just one or two songs for that film.
The film is directed by BR Jhingan for Shankar Movietone, Bombay. The star cast includes Nishi, Premnath, Suresh, Maruti, Zeb Rehman, Prithviraj, Heeralal, and Ulhas amongst others. The singing voices in this duet are of Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur.
With this song, the film ‘Sher Afghan’ opens its account on the blog today. The song itself is a simple and unhurried expression of pleasure as the lovers are counting their blessings for having found each other. A softly sung song of happiness, that is made special by the voice of Mukesh.

Never heard about this movie or the song (just read the name while making the list of balance movies of 60s to be introduced on the blog. Gaana alag hai lekin achha hai…. Like Mukesh’s voice and the tune. Thanks Sudhirbhai for opening the account of this movie. According to HFGK, is film ke khaate mein abhi paanch aur gaane jamaa hai. 🙂
