Genius of Jaidev – 25
———————————-
In this series, we are trying to cover all the songs from 1957 film ‘Anjali’, which happens to be Jaidev’s third released film. Prior to this, he had only one released film in each of the prior two years; 1955 – ‘Joru Ka Bhai’, and 1956 – ‘Samundari Daku’. Not at all a successful entry in film music world. He had to wait till 1961 and the film ‘Hum Dono’ to be recognized as a great composer, capable to catch attention of classes and masses. However, to the true good music lovers (including me), all of his tunes right from his first film are gems.
Jaidev had started his film journey as an assistant to Ustad Ali Akbar Khan with the films ‘Andhiyaan’ (1952) and ‘Hamsafar’ (1953). For Khan Saheb, after that, it was a full stop, as far as music direction was concerned, but he was in heavy demand as an ‘A’ class musician for the music orchestras of all the good music directors.
In this song, one can hear the strings of Sarod, played by Khan Saheb, throughout. The effect of this combination and the tune set by Jaidev will hypnotize the listeners. (BTW, I remember another song by Lata under music direction of Jaikishan where Sarod by Khan Saheb is as effective as this song. Identify that song. This is a quiz for all Atulites)
(Note 1: It appears that the film ‘Anjali’, also has an alternate title – ‘Arpan’. Apparently, it was released on disc under this alternate title).
(Note 2: Help is requested to correctly decipher one line in the lyrics, marked with (?) ).

Right you are Nitinbhai. Though I had another Jaikishan song from ‘Patrani’ in mind. The song is ‘Chandrama madbhara kyun zoome badal mein’, with khan saheb’s Sarod playing throughout..

One must hear Chetan Anand’s Aandhiyan (1952) Lata Mangeshkar song, “Har Kahin Pe Shaadmani” and as a token of her respect to sarod maestro, she did not charge any fee.
This was followed by Satyajit Ray’s Devi (1960), Merchant-Ivory’s The Householder, and Tapan Sinha’s Khudito Pashan (“Hungry stones”, 1960), for which he won the “Best Musician of the Year” award.
Later in 1993, he would score some of the music for Bernardo Bertolucci Little Buddha and Devi by Satyajit Ray.
