“Benazir”(1964) was directed by S Khalil for Bimal Roy Productions. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Shashi Kapoor, Tanuja, Nirupa Roy, Durga Khote, Tarun Bose, Lata Sinha, Asit sen, Pal Mahendra, Bela Bose etc in it.
Here is the story as given by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia (who watched in in 1965)with additional inputs by Sudhir Ji (who watched it in DD days (1970s).
Benazir (Meena Kumari) is a dancer of Lucknow, who is loved by Nawab Afsar Hussain(Ashok Kumar),though he has a good looking and khandani Biwi, Begum Sarwari(Nirupa Roy), at home.
Benazir secretly loves younger brother of Nawabsaab, Anwar nawab(Shashi Kkapoor) who is-unknown to Benazir-already engaged to Shahida(Tanuja), younger sister of Begum Sarwari.
Anwar is intensely offended with Benazir. But he is also very intensely offended with his own elder brother, to the extent that he leaves home and goes away. In the episode at the house of Benazir, yes the Nawaab Sb has a heart attack, but he does not pass away. He recovers. There is a falling out between Benazir and Nawaab Sb. She leaves her house and goes away to lead an anonymous life.
Some time (years?) passes. Anwar is making a living as a door to door salesman completely disconnected from his family. Benazir now lives discreetly in a respectable neighborhood. Fate brings Anwar to the door of Benazir one day. When she opens the door, and they see each other, Anwar is thunderstruck. All the sad memories of the past come to him, and he rushes away from her door, in panic and anger. She runs after him trying to stop him. Without seeing where he is going, he plunges through the crowd on the street, tries to run across the road full of traffic, and has a serious accident. With the help of some other people, Benazir brings an unconscious Anwar to her own home. He remains unconscious for a long time. Benazir starts taking care of him. The doctor is called. It takes some time for Anwar to regain his health. But during this time, other emotional transitions happen. Anwar comes to realize that Benazir was not at fault. He also comes to realize that he has now fallen in love with her. Now his resolution is that he will only marry Benazir.
Through some ways, information reaches Nawaab Sb, and he comes to visit Benazir and the bedridden Anwar. Emotional reunion occurs, but now Anwar is not ready to forgive his elder brother. Benazir then talks with Anwar, and is successful in changing his mind to reestablish his relationship with his elder brother and bhabhi. Anwar now agrees, on the condition that he marries Benazir. It is almost close to a happy ending. In a private moment with Benazir, some words slip from the lips of Nawaab Sb – “Sochta hoon ke Shahida ka kya hoga”. It turns out that Shahida is still unmarried and still waiting for Anwar to return.
Benazir takes these words to heart. A dance program happens and she is invited to perform. The song is “Gham Nahin Gar Zindagi Veeraan Hai, Ishq Par To Jaan Bhi Qurbaan Hai”. During this dance, she is supposed to drink some fake poison from a cup. She manipulates, and brings real poison with her, adds it to the cup and drinks it. She dies at the end of the dance program. Nawaab Sb’s family is reunited, with Shahida also joining. Benazir sacrifices herself for the happiness of others.
There are ten songs in “Benazir”(1964) according to HFGK. While discussing the songs of this movie, we came across a song not listed in HFGK namely Main shola hoon har ek shai ko jalaanaa kaam hai mera .
Counting this unlisted song, “Benazir”(1964) has eleven songs in it. Ten songs have already been discussed in the blog.
The one missing song was “Ya Gafoor ul Rahim Ya Allah” as mentioned in HFGK. The details of this song were not available. In fact the song itself is quite elusive and it was not available in YT and other music hosting sites.
When I located this song in my hard disk, I realised that this song is more like a recital rather than a song, sans any music. This song is sung by Usha MangeshkarMubarak Begam. Lyricist is not mentioned in HFGK though it should be Shakeel Badayuni seeing that he has penned the other songs of this movie. There is no music in this song, still one has to credit S D Burman as the music director of this song.
With this elusive final song, “Benazir”(1964) joins the list of movies that have all its songs covered in the blog.
I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the gaps/ suggest corrections as applicable in the lyrics of the “song”.

Atul ji,
myswar.com has listed all 11 songs from Benazir (1964). My guess is that HFGK may have mentioned ‘not listed song’ in the supplementaries/addenda.
