Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 31
———————————————————
JAWAAB (1942) was produced under the banner of M P Productions and it was directed by P C Barua who was also the lead actor in the movie alongwith Kanan Devi and Jamuna. The box office success of this film was very important for him as he has turned producer under his newly created production company, M P Productions after leaving New Theatres in 1940. His first two films ‘Uttarayan’ and ‘Rani’ under his own banner were financial disasters. But the success of ‘Shesh Uttar (in Bengali) and its Hindi version ‘Jawaab’ (1942) silenced his critics who were predicting slow and sure downfall for him from his earlier success of ‘Devdas’ (1935) and ‘Mukti’ (1937).

Despite the box office success of both versions of the film, the critics maintained that the film was not upto the earlier high standard P C Barua that he had achieved in ‘Devdas’ (1935) and ‘Mukti’ (1937). The success of ‘Jawaab’ (1942) was attributed to its music composed by Kamal Das Gupta. There were 10 songs in the film and all songs especially, 3 songs rendered by Kanan Devi became very popular.

& songs, out of 10 songs in the film have been covered in the Blog inn the past. I was to present the 8th song ‘loot raha hai koi shaayad’ much earlier. But realising that the video clip of the song available on YT ends abruptly, I thought that I will wait for the full song to appear on the YT. It was only today that I could find a mp3 clip of the full song which I converted into a video clip and uploaded on YT.

The song ‘loot raha, loot raha, loot raha hai koi shaayad’ is sung by Anima Dasgupta and it is picturised on Jamuna. The song is penned by Pt. Madhur and it is set to music by Kamal Das Gupta. The audio in the video clip uploaded from the film does not unfortunately sync with the video.

The song is composed and rendered in a style typical of the Calcutta (Kolkata) school of Hindi film music which is pleasing to the ears.

Lyrics (Based on Audio Clip)

loot raha

loot raha hai koi shaayad
loot raha hai koi
loot raha
loot raha
loot raha hai koi shaayad
loot raha hai koi
dheere dheere maine apne
dil ki daulat khoyi ee ee
dheere dheere maine apne
dil ki daulat khoyi ee ee
loot raha
loot raha
loot raha hai koi shaayad
loot raha hai koi

daaku bhi hai bhola bhaala
toda jisne dil kaa taala
jaag rahi hoon main duniya mein
jaag rahi hoon main duniya mein
yaa ab tak hoon soyi ee ee
loot raha
loot raha
loot raha hai koi shaayad
loot raha hai koi

chhupa saki na prem kaa gaana
kar na saki main koi bahaana
kya lootne main maza hai aata
kya lootne main maza hai aata
jo ab tak na khoyi ee ee
loot raha
loot raha
loot raha hai koi shaayad
loot raha hai koi

It is not very relevant, but I will still jot down this in the comments, what comes from my memories, as suggested by one of my Gurus.
In the late thirties and early forties Hindi was not very popular especially in rural areas. It was mainly due to Hindi films and much later (after independence) by the efforts of ‘Rastrabhasha Samiti’ that made Hindi popular.
I was a star singing student during my school and college days. My music teacher made compulsory for me to sing at least four to six songs back to back at the school annual function. My source for getting new songs was my cousin brother, who came to our town during vacations. He was a good singer but often taught me wrong lyrics of the song. As per example, there was a then, popular song “Naacho Naacho Pyare Man Ke Mor, Ban Ban Ki Daali Pe Hota Hai SHOR” He taught me ‘CHOR’ instead of ‘SHOR’ and I bravely sang ‘CHOR’ in that school function and for years elders in the town used to tease me with THAT line of that song.

This string of memory was stirred by the word ‘Shayad’ in the above song.
Not knowing the meaning of the word ‘SHAYAD’, when asked, my cousin promptly told me ‘Lootaru’ meaning ‘Dacoit’.

Distinctly sweet Bengali voice. Can easily be mistaken for that of Kanan Devi. Problem ! In our social group, hardly anyone appreciates when I sing songs of Kanan Devi, Punkaj, Koondanlal, and likes of this era ! Sad and frustrating ! Vasishtha.

I am with you. Do not fret. Carry on all the same. It is their problem not yours.
