CHUPKE CHUPKE (1948) was produced under the banner of Rajeshwari Films, Bombay and it was directed by Baij Sharma and K C Verma. The star cast included Nirmala Devi, Shanti Kumar, Suraj Bakshi, Zarina, Nafees Begum etc. I do not have any inkling about the story of the film.
While searching for the songs of 1940s, it has been my experience that some of the films made during the late 1946 and early 1947 seem to have suffered on account of the partition. While some of them remained unfinished/ unreleased, some such films could get released during post-partition period. Little details could be found about such movies. My guess is ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1948) was one such film.
The film had 9 songs in it which were written by Tufail Hoshiyaarpuri and Wakar (or Walker?) Pandey. However, individual distribution of songs among them is not available. All the songs were composed by S D Batish. As far as I know, videos of only 4 songs from the film are available on YT. In addition, I have mp3 clip of the 5th song from the film which I have uploaded of YT today after making a video of the song.
I am presenting the same uploaded song ‘aayi hai mere dil ki ummeedon pe jawaani aayi’ sung by Munawwar Sultana (not to be confused with Munawwar Sultana, the actress). Not much information about the early life of Munawwar Sulatana, the playback singer, is available. In most of the short write-ups on her, she is referred to ‘as the Pakistani playback singer’. I can understand as to why she has been identified as such. Her playback singing career in undivided India was short which started in 1945 with the film ‘Dhamki’ (1945) and ended virtually in 1947 after partition. The reason was that she was a radio singer in Lahore and after partition she continued to be in Lahore. However, a few films with her songs continued to be released in India after partition.
It was in Pakistan that her playback singing career really took off. In the 1950s, she was one of the leading female playback singers of Pakistan. IMost Hindi film music lovers in India are not aware that Munawwar Sultana (the singer) had started her playback singing career in undivided India and she had sung around 20 songs in HFM. Most of her 20 odd songs were not readily available on Video song websites until last year. During the last one year, I have listened to nearly a dozen of such HFM songs of her. In my view, she had the potential of giving a tough competition to some of her contemporaries like Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Shamshad Begum, Zeenat Begum and Naseem Akhtar. However, being a radio singer might have restricted her playback singing career. A few of the songs listed below gives an idea of her singing ability:
masti ka samaa do phool khilen hain
ab dil mein hai barbaad tamanna ke siwa kyaa
duniya-e-aarzoo ko mitaakar chale gaye
And the lyrics of the song under discussion with fast paced rendition makes it one more example of her marvellous singing voice. This is a joie de vivre song which listeners would surely enjoy.
An interesting observation is that while ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975) has already been ‘yippeed’, ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1948) makes its debut in the Blog with this song.
