Today (16th October 2016) is the birth anniversary of Chitragupt, yesteryear music composer.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Chitragupt is one of the most under-rated composers of the Hindi film industry. When you think of composers of the golden era of Hindi music, the names that come readily to mind are Naushad, SD Burman, Shankar Jaikishen, OP Nayyar, C. Ramachandra, Roshan, Salil Chaudhary, Hemant Kumar , Madan Mohan etc. Maybe even Ravi.
But the name of Chitragupt might not be top of mind. In the embarrassment of riches that was the golden era of music, Chitragupt’s name often gets forgotten, and is not mentioned.
And that, in my opinion, is grossly unfair.
Chitragupt had a career spanning over 50 years, with plenty of melodious music over this period. He certainly deserves his place in the sun too.
I first heard of Chitragupt on All India Radio, in one of their usual radio programmes. The song was “laagi chhoote na, ab to sanam” from Kaali Topi Laal Rumaal (1959). This seemed to be an AIR favourite in my childhood days – it used to play very regularly. I liked this song a lot – it was very melodious and sweetly composed.
A “twin song” of this one, also an AIR favourite, was “teri duniya se door” from Zabak (1961). This also used to play a lot.
I knew every word of both these songs by heart – and could recognise them from the very first musical note itself. 🙂
Then there were the other pleasant compositions by Chitragupt. Songs of Ganga Ki Lehren (1964) come to mind. I love the songs of this film – the title song (machalti hui), the lovely “chhedo na meri zulfein”, also “jai jai he jagdambe maata”.
Lata Mangeshkar sang some beautiful songs for Chitragupt. One of my favourite Lata songs is for him – “dil ka diya jala ke gaya, ye kaun meri tanhayee mein” from Akashdeep (1965). What a lovely song it is!
And of course, the brilliant “balma maane na” from Opera House (1961).
Then there was the beautiful “aaj ki raat naya chand leke aayi hai” from Shaadi (1962). And “Krishna O Kaale Krishna” from Main Bhi Ladki Hoon (1964).
“Dar dar ke thokron” from Mera Qasoor Kya Hai (1964).
And so many more Lata gems.
Not to be outdone, Rafisaab had his fair share of wonderful songs too for Chitragupt. Who can forget the beautiful, soulful, melodious “mujhe dard-e-dil ka pataa na tha, mujhe aap kis liye mil gaye” – one of my absolute favourites.
And the beautiful “ye parbaton ke daayre” and “itni naazuk na bano” from Vaasna (1968) – penned by Sahir.
And the romantic “jaag dil-e-deewana” from Oonche Log (1965).
This film also had that popular Lata-Mahendra Kapoor duet “Aaja re mere pyaar ke raahi”.
Then there was the Lata-Mukesh duet “dekho mausam kya bahaar hai” from Opera House (1961).
And the Rafisaab-Suman duet “jab se hum tum” from Main Shaadi Karne Chala (1962).
Another Rafisaab-Suman duet “bahut haseen hai tumhaari aankhen” from Aadhi Raat Ke Baad (1965).
Another AIR favourite comes to mind. Rafisaab’s “Chal ud ja re panchhi” from Bhabhi (1957).
.
And so many more.
I have barely scraped the surface. This is just to give a very small “jhalki” into the music of Chitragupt.
And to think that even with such a rich treasure of songs, he isn’t quite given his due, is truly unfair and unfortunate.
Possibly the reason for this is that Chitragupt was not part of a big-banner team. Shankar Jaikishen had RK Studios, SD Burman had Navketan, even Ravi had BR Chopra – Chitragupt had no such big name. He often composed in small budget films, with less known artistes. The film itself became obscure – and so, even with good music, he never quite got due recognition.
I read a while ago that the composer for whom Geeta Dutt has sung most songs is..no, it isn’t SD Burman or OP Nayyar, but Chitragupt!!!
One of the lovely songs for Chitragupt, rendered by Geeta Dutt is “jaane kaise kaise ho jee tum” from Basre Ki Hoor (1956). This has already been posted here, but the song for today is another song from this film, sung by Asha Bhosle – “dil si naazuk cheez ko”.
I heard it for the first time today and quite liked it. I hope you do too.

In closing, I’d like to thank Chitragupt ji for his valuable, if not appropriately recognized, contribution to HFM. The rest of the world might not give him his due, but we here on this blog, will not make that mistake.

Raja ji,
Thanks for a well written article on my favourite composer Chitragupta. I have always said that Chitragupta is one of the four composers of Hindi films, whose songs guarantee melody and sweetness. ( The other three, in my opinion are Khemchand Prakash, Hansraj Behl and Ravi).
It is his bad luck that he could not tag himself with any big banner. It was not his nature to run after work.
He had special bond with Lata Mangeshkar on personal level. In one of my articles on chitragupta, I have detailed this.
I knew him personally also and met him several times, during his last few years.

Parthaji, there seems to be confusion on this. There are sources which put the date as 16/11, there are others that have it as 16/10. Our much-respected and trusted source is Arunji – we have checked with him and gone with his view on this. So 16/10 it is for us, until someone can conclusively prove this to be wrong.

Dear Raja,
While it is not my intention to rake up an issue here , but it is worth knowing the basis of Arunji’s view . I went back to the Websites on Chitragupt and all repeat all of them mention 16/11 as his DOB . For example , listen to this Programme broadcast over Vivid Bharati on 14th January 2016 , where within the first 5 minutes , the commentator mentions his DOB as 16th November .
You may like to consult with Arunji about this .

There were some sources that mentioned the date as 16/10 and we had gone by that. Now we have consulted a well respected Hindi film historian. He states that the date is 16/11 according to his information. So we have acknowledged that our date was wrong. Now we have corrected the date in the anniversary page.

As Atul has clarified, after further checking, it is now clear that the date is 16/11. So from next time, we will use this as the date.

I was following your conversations on whatsapp keenly and found that you are the fastest Gun alive !! What speed and yet a very good article bringing out all the strengths of Chitragupta and giving him due credit for melody !!!

Yes, it was good team work. Avinashji called me up, asking me which song I wanted to write up, so that he could work on the lyrics. While I was on the write-up, he quickly got the lyrics ready.
It was like a relay race. Atul was waiting for me, I was waiting for Avinashji. Each one passed the baton to the other. Good fun! 🙂
