GIRLS SCHOOL (1949) was produced under the banner of Lokmanya Productions ( a joint venture of Kavi Pradeep and Amiya Chakraborty). The film was directed by Amiya Chakraborty. Interestingly, one of the assistant directors for him in this film was Guru Dutt. The star cast included Geeta Bali, Sohan, Sajjan, Shashikala, Mangala, Ram Singh, Vimla Vashisht etc. Amiya Chakraborty has been known to produce/direct socially relevant films which he must have got this legacy from his association with Bombay Talkies.

I came across an interesting letter on the film written by one of the cinegoers which appeared in August 1949 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine. Here are his observations:

I am wondering what this film has to do with women’s educational institute. There is not a single scene depicting as to how our rustic Indian girls are thought to become good mothers, good wives and good sisters though the head mistress of the Girls School uses these phrases so generously.
Nowhere (in the film) do we come across a single shot of the newly appointed young teacher and the head mistress taking classes. But none the less, we see a good deal about their ‘Laila-Majnu’ affairs. I shudder to think of the consequences that might follow if all the unmarried teachers begin to act in this manner.

The film failed miserably at the box office and with this, the joint venture film production company between Amiya Chakraborty and Kavi Pradeep came to an end.

The film had 9 songs anf four of them have been represented in the Blog. All the songs were written by Kavi Pradeep which were set to music by Anil Biswas (4) and C Ramchandra (5). In this film, C Ramchandra was assisting Anil Biswas for ‘old time sake and for his high regards for Anilda’. So why did Anil Biswas not composed all the songs? The answer can be found in Raju Bhartan’s book ‘A Journey Down Memory Lane’. I am paraphrasing his version:

At the time of recording the songs for the film, Anil Biswas felt that Kavi Pradeep as a lyricist (also as a co-producer of the film) was interfering too much on the tuning of the songs. The clash of ego between Kavi Pradeep and Anil Biswas reached at a high point when the former regarded the tune of Lata’s solo tumhi kaho mera man kyun rahe udaas nahin ‘too slow moving’. That was the trigger point for Anil Biswas to leave the film in disgust after heated arguments with Kavi Pradeep ensued. C Ramchandra had to reluctantly come to record this Lata solo. Later on, when Lata, Mangeshkar came to know about the incidence, she refused to record the remaining songs for the film saying that Anil Biswas was removed unethically from the film.

The female playback singers for the five songs composed by C Ramchandra were Shamshad Begum (4) and Lalita Deulkar (1).

I am presenting one of those 5 songs ‘ram bharose meri gaadi chali jaaye’ composed by C Ramchandra. The song is sung by Chitalkar (C Ramchandra), Shamshad Begum and chorus on the lyrics of Kavi Pradeep. If I recall correctly, this song was popular as I had heard it many times on the radio in my younger days. Despite the best of my efforts, I could not locate the song on YT. So I have made the video from the mp3 clip of the song I had with me for uploading on YT.

Enjoy the song composed in typical C Ramchandra style.

Lyrics

raam bharose meri gaadi chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
jhat pat jhat pat sadak pe bhaage
kaisi chatur khilaadi ee
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi

upar gagan kaa tamboo tana hai
neeche manohar hai dharti
aeji waah waah
waah waah

beech dagar meri gaadi chali jaaye
jigar pe jaadoo karti
aji waah waah
waah waah

kitni ajab hai kudrat ki maaya
kahin pe dhoop hai kahin pe chhaaya

kahin pe ghane ghane jungle khade hain
kahin pe jhurmut jhaadi ee
kahin pe jhurmut jhaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi

aaj kaho jo do do talwaaren
kidhar chalin kis dhyaan mein
jeewan ka sangraam khelne
duniya ke maidaan mein

kya na tumhaara mann ghabraata aa
gham ki fiqar rakhta hai vidhaata
khud ki taaqaat ko jo na samjhe
wo hai bilkul anaadi
wo hai bilkul anaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi

sambhal ke rehna
zindagaani kaa
panthh hai badaa pahaadi
kya baat hai
aa haa haa

bhool bhatak mat jaana jagat mein
rakhna aankh ughaadi
kya baat hai
aa haa haa

chattaanon se takraayenge ham
pattharon mein raah banaayenge ham

ek na ek din
ham le(?) jaayenge
parwat pe phulwaadi
parwat pe phulwaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
ram bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi
chali jaaye
raam bharose meri gaadi

According to one site the song is composed by both Anilda and CR. Also

Gori Ek Baat Sun Badi Mazedar Hai

Rest are either Anilda or CR

I will always remember this film for Lata Mangeshkar’s pristine voice in the duet with Shankar Dasgupta especially the way “chaar” in pronounced by her in the song.
