Younger generation are always under the impression that old generation persons were boring and new generation people are fun loving. Hindi movie lovers have the same idea about old movies and their songs.
When I was growing up in late 1960s and the whole of 1970s, I thought that the movies of that era and their music was the best. The movies and music of earlier years were boring as far as I (as well as others of my generation) was concerned.
A few years later (in 1980s in fact), I got exposed to the movies of Shammi Kapoor (thanks to Sunday movies on Doordarshan) and I concluded that 1960s too had fun films, especially those featuring Shammi Kapoor and his clones (like Joy Mukherji, Biswajeet etc). It is much later (this century in fact) when I discovered that even people like Guru Dutt had worked in fun films as far back as in 1950s.
Ashok Kumar is one actor whom we had always seen in the roles of an elderly (and therefore “boring” 🙂 roles. In fact, there were people who believe that he was born as an old man. 🙂 It is difficult to imagine it for many but he had played dashing anti establishment hero as far back as in 1943 in “Kismat”(1943). So one can say that he played an Amitabh Bachchan like role in a year when Amitabh Bachchan was just one year old.
Ashok Kumar in fact was looked upon with awe by people who were regarded by us as superstars. Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor were two heart throbs who grew up admiring Ashok Kumar.
I have wondered if Ashok Kumar ever figured in a Shammi Kapoor like song situation. Just now I listened to a song from “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan”(1944). This is a song that predates Shammi Kapoor songs by some two decades but it sounds quite like a song that Shammi Kapoor would figure in during his halcyon days, singing duets with the leading lady, typically in the voice of Rafi and Lata.
1944 was a time when Rafi and Lata were nowhere in contention, and the actors of those days were required to sing their own songs. Here is this duet song from “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan”(1944) which is sung by the leading pair of Ashok Kumar and Naseem Bano for themselves. So while Shammi Kapoor lip synced duets with the beti (Saira Bano) in “Junglee”(1961), Ashok Kumar sang with Maa of Saira Bano in early 1940s.
The song sounds quite ahead of its time. Lyrics are penned by Kavi Pradeep whereas music is composed by Ghulam Haider. And it must be said that the singers have sung this sung with gusto that was quite untypical of those days.
So, here is this by now rare song from “Chal Chal Re Naujawaan”(1944) for the listening pleasure of music lovers.
Song-Ek naya geet suno sajaniya (Chal Chal Re Naujawaan)(1944) Singers-Ashok Kumar, Naseem Bano, Lyrics-Pradeep, MD-Ghulam Haider
Lyrics
ek naya
geet suno
sajaniya aa aa aa aa
ek naya
geet suno
sajaniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
duniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
haan haan
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
ritu hai bahaar ki
sunder singaar ki
ritu hai bahaar ki
sunder singaar ki
zindagi pukaarti hai pyaar karo
haan haan
pyaar karo re
apne apne naina chaar karo re
apne apne naina chaar karo re ae
chand ghadiyon ki hai
ye chanchal chandniyaa
chand ghadiyon ki hai
ye chanchal chandniya
chand ghadi ke liye
chamakta chaand hai sajaniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
ek naya
geet suno
sajaniya aa aa aa aa
ek naya geet suno
sajaniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
haan haan
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
mauj karne ke liye hai duniya
