Though I was born in a non Hindi speaking family and grew up in a Non Hindi speaking region, I was enrolled into a Hindi medium High school by my idealist father. There were many students from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the school whose parents were settled in Mumbai (then Bombay). Naturally, we spoke to each other in Hindi. But when they would talk among themselves, they would speak in languages that sounded somewhat different from Hindi. It was at that time that I came to know about the many dialects of Hindi such as Bhojpuri and Awadhi, Brijbhaasha, Maithili Magadhi etc.

Among these dialects of Hindi, Bhojpuri has become well known even among non-Hindi speaking people. The credit for this should go to Bhojpuri films. The Bhojpuri film industry completed its golden jubilee in 2012 with more than 500 feature films to its credit. It is astonishing to know that Bhojpuri film industry has flourished over a period of time despite facing stiff competition from Hindi film industry possessing far superior production and star values. The reasons are not far to seek.

The Bhojpuri speaking regions in India comprises of Western Bihar, Eastern UP (Purvanchal), North-West part of Jharkand and some districts of Nepal bordering Eastern UP and Bihar. These regions especially the Eastern UP and Western Bihar are densely populated regions. Further, a large number Bhojpuri speaking people have migrated and settled at places like Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana etc. Going by 2001 population census and the growth rate of the population, the Bhojpuri speaking population may have touched the figure of 5 crore on a by now,. In addition, there are migrant population from the Bhojpur region to some countries like Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Surinam, Trinidad and even in Pakistan. Thus, there is a huge potential market for Bhojpuri films.

Bhojpuri region is culturally very rich. The richness of the folk culture of Bhojpur region is a source of inspiration for Bhojpuri films and in fact even for Hindi films. All these factors held lay the foundation of Bhojpuri film industry.

How the idea of producing the first Bhojpuri film germinated is an interesting one. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India was on a visit to Bombay (Mumbai) sometime in the second half of the 1950s. There he met Nazir Hussain, the character actor, at a film award ceremony. During the course of the discussion, Dr Rajendra Prasad who hailed from Bhojpur region came to know that Nazir Hussain also belonged to the same region. During the conversation, Dr. Rajendra Prasad asked him to make a film in Bhojpuri. Nazir Hussain humbly submitted that he was a mere character actor and film making needed a lot of money. The President agreed that one required a lot of courage but still said that he could make it. The challenge probably ignited the inner desire of Nazir Hussain to produce a Bhojpuri film. Thus the first Bhojpuri film, ‘Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’ (1962) was made. [Source of this information is from ‘Cinema Bhojpuri’ (2010) by Aviit Ghosh].

The artists of this first Bhojpuri film naturally had the distinction of being the first Bhojpuri movie artists. Ashim Kumar and Kumkum became the first lead pair of Bhojpuri films. Nazir Hussain, the first producer of a Bhojpuri movie. He was the ‘de facto’ producer (in credit title, the name of the financier was given as the producer of the film) and also the story/script writer/actor, Shailendra was the first as lyricist and Chitragupt was the first music director in the annals of Bhojpuri films.

Two of the top most playback singer of that time – Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi were also associated with the first Bhojpuri film. Padma Khanna made her debut as an actress with this film. Later on, she did many Bhojpuri films. She was often called as ‘Hema Malini’ of Bhojpuri films.

The first Bhojpuri film was a super box office hit which paved the way for a vibrant Bhojpuri film industry. If I go by the statistics of Bhojpuri films released as available from various sources on the internet, there has been significant surge in the number of Bhojpuri films released during the last 15 years. Out of roughly 600 Bhojpuri films released since the inception in 1962, a little more than half of them got released during 2001-2015.

The golden era of Bhojpuri film music was in the 1960s when melody was the king and lyrics of the songs represented the rural rustic flavour. Only 20 Bhojpuri films were released during this period. Reputed music directors like Chitragupt, S N Tripathi, Jamal Sen, C Ramchandra, Jaidev, Iqbal Qureshi and Dattaram and leading lyricists like Shailendra, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rammurty Chaturvedi were associated with these films.

I am presenting one of the songs from a Bhojpuri film, BHAUJI (1965) which was produced and directed by Kundan Kumar. The star cast included Sujit Kumar, Kumkum, Sabita Chatterjee, Leela Mishra, Bhagwan Sinha, Tuntun, Helen, Bela Bose etc. Unfortunately, the film is not available for viewing in any format.

No discussion on Bhojpuri films will be complete without the name of Sujit Kumar. He was the first super star of Bhojpuri films. He had to struggle to gain entry into the Bhojpuri films. He was first signed for hero’s role in the second Bhojpuri film ‘Laagi Naahi Chhute Ram’ (1963) but the heroine of the film Kumkum wanted Ashim Kumar as the hero. However, Sujit Kumar got the hero’s role in their next Bhojpuri film ‘Bidesia’ (1963) opposite Naaz. The film became a super hit. Thereafter he worked in 8 Bhojpuri films in the next 5 years making him one of the most sought after actors for Bhojpuri films. He was associated with Bhojpuri films up to 2004 donning the roles of hero, character actor, producer and director. [Source of this information is from an interview given by Sujit Kumar which was published in Cineplot].

The song I am presenting is ‘ae chandaa maama aare aawaa paare aawaa’ from the film BHAUJI (1965). Lata Mangeshkar sings the song on the lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri which is set to music by Chitragupt. The song is akin to a lullaby but is sung to make the fussy child eat the food and sleep. Incidentally, Chitragupt hailed from the Bhojpur region of Bihar.

There were 3 audio clips available on YT of this song but all of them were without the prelude music. So I have made the video of mp3 clip which had the prelude music and uploaded the same on YT.
