Hullo Atuldom
Happy Gokulashtami to all followers of this blog.
Yesterday we had a song which should have been categorised under “How come this has not been posted as yet?” The song with this post can also fall under the same category.
It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rajesh Roshan is the music composer. It is from the 1982 Ravi Tandon directed “Khuddar”.
This song depicts the ‘dahi-handi’ aspect of Gokulashtami. ‘Dahi-Handi’ draws inspiration from the antics of Lord Krishna or Balgopal who was rather mischievous and used to stealthily enter homes in Gokul and eat up freshly churned Dahi (curds or yogurt in modern parlance) and Makhan (butter). That is why one of his names is Maakhanchor. There is a lot of stories attached with the ‘leela’ of Balkrishna:- how the ladies of Gokul go complaining to Yashoda maa about Balkrishna eating away their dahi and makhan and how he used to say “Maiyya mori main nahin maakhan khaayo”. We have three versions of this song from movies made in 1959, 1977, and the version whose link I have given here was the first ever that came in 1942.
“Mach gayaa shor saari nagari” has Amitabh Bachchan making the human-pyramid and Parveen Babi in typical Maharastrian attire is out there either distracting him or encouraging him (don’t remember). We can see Vinod Mehra, A K Hangal enjoying the proceedings from the verandah of their chawl. Madhu Malini (permanent sister in many movies) walks in halfway through the song.
Song-Mach gaya shor saari nagri re (Khuddaar)(1982) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Rajesh Roshan
Chorus
Lyrics
mach gaya shor saari nagri re
saari nagri re
aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
ho oo aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
arre mach gaya shor saari nagri re,
saari nagri re
aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
ho oo aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
dekho arre dekho kahin aisa na ho jaaye
chori kare maakhan,
tera jiya bhi churaaye
dekho arre dekho kahin aisa na ho jaaye
chori kare maakhan,
tera jiya bhi churaaye
arre dhamkata hai
itna tu kisko
darta hai kaun aane de usko
darta hai kaun aane de usko
aise na bahut bolo
mat thumak-thumak dolo
chillaogi tab gori
jab ulat dega tori
gagri aake peechhe dagri re
arre mach gaya shor saari nagri re,
saari nagri re
aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
ho o aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
lalala lalaa lalala lalaa lalala lalaa
lalala lalaa lalala lalaa lalala lalaa
jaane kya karta agar hota kahin gora
jaake Jamuna mein zara shakal dekhe chhora
jaane kya karta agar hota kahin gora
jaake Jamuna mein zara shakal dekhe chhora
bindiya chamkaati raste mein na ja
manchala bhi hai Gokul ka raja
manchala bhi hai Gokul ka raja
pad jaaye nahin paala
Radha se kahin lala
phir royega Govinda
maaregi aisa phanda
gardan se baandhegi chunri re
mach gaya shor saari nagri re,
saari nagri re
aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
ho aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
arre mach gaya shor saari nagri re,
saari nagri re
aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
ho oo aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
o o o o o
mach gaya shor saari nagri re,
saari nagri re
aaya Biraj ka banka sambhaal teri gagri re
hoy hoy hoy hoy hoy hoy
hoy hoy hoy hoy

Used to come on radio very often back in the 80s.. The other famous song from Khuddaar was ‘Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain Ke I Love You..’, which i guess is already there on the blog. Happy Gokulashtami! :).
