Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Maiyya mori main nahin maakhan khaayo

Posted on: June 25, 2011

Most Hindi movie songs have been written by lyricists who were around at the time when these songs were composed. But there are some cases where the lyricists lived in an earlier era and they were dead and buried/cremated long before their creations were used in Hindi movie songs. For instance, Hindi movies have used songs written by Ghalib,Meera bai etc who lived in the 19th century and 15th century respectively. In fact, in one case, an Hindi movie has used a poetry of an English poet who lived in the 19th century.

To the best of my knowledge, the most ancient poet whose poetry has been used as Hindi movie songs has to be the blind poet called Surdas (1478-1581), who was a devotee of Lord Krishna and who composed a huge compendium of thousands of poems/songs in his book called Sursaagar. About 8000 of these songs are still available.

One of the most popular of his songs has to be the song “Maiyya mori main nahin maakan khaayo” where the child Lord Krishna, on being accused of Yashoda of stealing butter, remonstrates that he spends his entire day in the jungle shepherding cows and playing flutes, so where is the time and opportunity for him to steal butter. Here are your sticks and here are your cattle, I have had enough of shepherding the cow if all I get in return are accusations of stealing butter. And the mother Yashoda, much amused by the tantrums of Krishna, hugs him.

This song has been sung by countless singers, in movies as was as non movie songs. One of the most memorable versions of this song is undoubtedly the version that K L Saigal sings in the movie ‘Bhakt Surdas” (1942), which as the title suggests, was made on the life of Surdas.

Here is this wonderful rendition of the song “Maiyya Mori main naahin maakhan khaayo” by the one and only K L saigal. Soordas is the lyricist and Gyan Dutt is the music director.

Amir Khusro predates Surdas by over 200 years. Many of his songs have featured in films on several occasions. To cite one example:

Kahe ko byahe bides by Jagjit Kaur from Umrao Jaan (1981)

Same song by Mukesh from Suhagraat (1948)

I am so overwhelmed to hear this devotional song after a long time. It is a song from the year of my birth – all the more emotional attachment. It takes me back to my childhood days and reminds me how my uncle used to sing this song with great taste.

I deeply appreciate this collection which is a great boon to the music lovers.
