In this episode, we discuss Lata Mangeshkar songs that she sang in Hindi movies released in 1989.
In 1989, 132 Hindi movies containing 627 songs were released. Lata Mangeshkar got to sing in 19 of these movies and she sang 38 songs in these movies. So Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was heard in 15 % of the movies released in 1989. Her voice was heard in 6 % of the songs appearing in the movies of 1989.

Lata Mangeshkar worked with 13 music directors and 14 lyricists in these 19 movies released in 1989. Laxmikant Pyarelal were the most prolific music directors with Lata, with 649 songs in HFM with Lata Mangeshkar by the end of 1989. Shankar Jaikishan with 457 songs in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar were in the second position. R D Burman with 330 Lata Mangeshkar and Kalyanji Anandji with 307 songs were next ahead of C Ramchandra with 274 songs. Other top music directors for Lata Mangeshkar were Chitragupta (239), Madan Mohan (195), S D Burman (179),Naushad (145), Roshan (144), Hemant Kumar (127), Anil Biswas (120), Husnlal Bhagatram (108), Salil Chaudhary (108), Vasant Desai (104) and Rajesh Roshan (103). Together these sixteen music directors composed 3589 songs out of 4940 songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies till end of 1989. Anand Bakshi with 658 songs was the top lyricist with Lata Mangeshkar. Other leading lyricists with Lata Mangeshkar were Rajinder Krishan (554), Majrooh Sultanpuri (405), Shailendra (361), Hasrat Jaipuri (298), Prem Dhawan (201), Bharat Vyas (193), Shakeel Badayuni (189), Sahir Ludhianvi (161) and Indeewar (151). These ten lyricists had penned 3171 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar till that time.

It can be seen from the table of 1989 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 38 songs in 19 movies released in 1989.
8 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies of 1989 have been covered in the blog. All Lata songs from two movies (one song each from “Jurrat” and “Ram Lakhan”) have been covered. That leaves us with 36 songs from 17 movies of 1989 that are yet to be covered.
Alphabetically “Aakhri Badla”(1989) is the first movie of 1989 that offers us a Lata Mangeshkar song to be covered in the blog.
“Aakhri Badla”(1989) was produced by Produced by Biswanath Ghosh and Jibananda Ghosh and directed by Mangal Chakraborty for B T B Enterprises. The movie had Pradeep Kumar, Prem Chopra, Abhi Bhattacharya, Anil Chatterjee, Tom Alter, Avijeet Sen, Bishwanath Ghoshe, Hilary Eastwick Held,
Babban Lal Yadav, Jay Shree T, Daljeet Kaur, Miss Sagiri –Suzaki, Miss Sayuri –Khishino, Miss Mayumi – Kitho, Gyanesh Mukherjee, Jibananda Ghoshe, Shiva, Pammi Shandhu, Babban, Biren Chatterjee, Jawahar Kaul, T.Makhino, T.Maeda, C.Key, K.Hotta,G.Togami,J.Robert, E.Newman etc. The movie had guest appearances by Yogita Bali(Chakraborty) and International fame Martial art expert Hirokazu-Kanazawa as Kitahara.
“Aakhri Badla”(1989) had a chequered history. It was planned on an ambitious grandiose scale as a bilingual movie in Banagla and Hindi. The movie kept getting delayed. By the time it could be released, more than 7 years later, the movie had few takers
The movie had four songs in it. One of them was a Kishore Kuamr Lata Mangeshkar duet. Yogesh is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.
Only the audio of the song seems to be available. Salil Chaudhary had used this tune earlier in a Malayalam film “Etho Oru Swapnam” (1978) and then in the Tamil film “Azhiyadha Kolangal” (1978), both with music by Salil Chaudhary. The Malayalam film song “Poomanam Poothulanje” was sung by Yesudas, while the Tamil song “Poo Vannam Pola Nenjam” was sung by P. Jayachandran and P. Susheela. This tune was even older. It was initially released in 1980 under the title “Antarghat”.

“Poo Vannam Pola Nenjam” I have heard a number of times. didn’t know that Salil Chaudhary had used in Hindi too.
And so little Lata Mangeshkar songs in late 80s…. I am surprised.
