#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Kraanti-1981’. This was one of the biggest movies of our times when people like me were still growing up or had just entered their teens. I still vividly remember the summer of 1981 when we had watched this movie in the near-by city Akola (Maharashtra). This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.01.1981. Unlike now, when movies are released simultaneously in all places, it would take two-three months for the movies to reach the theatres then.

I also remember the discussions among elders at home and seniors in our friend circle as to how Manoj Kumar had put everything at stake (including selling his property to finance the film) to make this movie and his hard work and dedication paid off. Public praised the movie and made it a blockbuster hit. After the success of the film, articles appeared in film magazines and print media where Manoj Kumar stated that “‘Kraanti’ ne mujhe mera sab kuchh lautaa diya”.

“Kraanti-1981” was produced & directed by Manoj Kumar for his home productions ‘V.I.P Films’. It had Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Sarika, Nirupa Roy, Prem Chopra, Pradeep Kumar, Dheeraj Kumar, Shashikala, Madan Puri, Sulochana, Paintal Birbal, Jairaj, Agha, Kishore Kapoor, Ram Mohan, Bhagwan, Sudhir Dalvi, Tom Alter, Manmohan, Shammi, Lalita Kumari, Preeti Ganguly, Gufi Paintal, Datey, Rajan Kapoor, Kamaldeep, Veeru Devgan, Raj Singh, Gurbachan, Habib, Panthulu, Shukla, Darshan, Inayat, Nutan, Sayeed, Mustafa, B.B. Sahni, Master Aditya, and debutant Kunal Goswami and others.

Readers who have watched this movie must be aware about the story of this movie. Nevertheless I am reproducing below what is mentioned at the beginning of this movie on screen;

“Kraanti” is inspired from the martyrs of Indian struggle for freedom during 1825 to 1875 A.D. but remained unknown in the pages of history. This film is dedicated to that anonymous revolutionary farmer who took oath to free the motherland and lit the torch of ‘Kraanti’, who was he?”

Now we all know that the farmer is nobody else but Dilip Kumar … and Manoj Kumar played his son in the movie. He has a brother Shashi Kapoor and Nirupa Roy plays mother to both of them. Rest is the best of all ingredients of drama, action, emotions, songs etc required for a ‘blockbuster movie’ and should be enjoyed by watching the movie I think 🙂 (Though if possible in the future I can take you through the story of this movie with some of its ‘iconic’ dialogues like ‘Shambhu Singh ka dimaag – do dhaari talwaar’ (This is the famous lecherous character on screen of Hindi Cinema- Prem Chopra – who else!! 🙂 )

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by the famous duo Salim-Javed. Dialogues for this movie were written by Manoj Kumar himself and he had also done the editing of this movie. Lyrics for the songs in this movie were by Manoj Kumar and Santosh Anand and music was composed by the great music-duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

This movie has seven songs including one two-part song. Mahendra Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Minoo Purushottam, Shailendra Singh and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

On music front the songs of this movie are very good and in fact this is one of the best albums of composer Laxmikant-Pyarelal from the decade of 1981-1990. There were many others too.

Three songs from this movie “Kranti-1981” had appeared in the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala’ of the year ‘1981’. These three songs covering different emotions were ‘zindagi ki naa toote ladi- at number two (at number one it was ‘mere angne mein from ‘Laawaaris-1981’ 🙂 ), ‘chanaa zor garam’ at number six and ‘looie shamasha’ at number twenty-six. Apart from these three songs the other four songs from this movie are also nice hummable songs and were quite popular during those days. Out of the total seven songs in this movie five were penned by Santosh Anand and two were penned by Manoj Kumar himself. The songs that featured in the ‘Annual Binaca Geetmala-1981’ are all written by Santosh Anand.

Today I present a song written by Manoj Kumar from this movie. The song is a popular ‘Maata ki bhent’ song. It is part of all popular compilations brought out by music companies on ‘Maata Devotional Songs’. This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Minoo Purushottam.

In the movie this songs appears at three different occasions and it played in the back ground on screen. The first part of this song is played when the King after giving permission to the British to use their port for shipping activities. The King visits the town temple for offering prayers to the ‘devi’ and seeking the blessing of the goddess for his sister who is expecting a child. The second time only the ‘mukhdaa’ of this song is played (which in the audio version is the beginning of the song)in the background when Rana Sanga (Dilip Kumar) declares war against the British and attacks the fort. The third part of the song happens when Sanga (Dilip Kumar) is about to hang Shakti (Shashi Kapoor) who is Sanga’s son but he Sanga is not aware of that. When Shakti is about to be hanged the prayer sound from the temple is heard and Shakti’s hanging is postponed for the next day as Sanga has to visit the temple of ‘devi maata’. When Sanga reaches the temple he sees his wife (Nirupa Roy) there and both of them meet after a long time. During this meeting Nirupa Roy also tells Sanga about Shakti being their younger son.

As mentioned above Manoj Kumar wrote the lyrics of this song. Four songs penned by Manoj Kumar have already been posted on the blog earlier, and few more may be coming in the future, as there are songs written by him for movies like ‘Shirdi Ke Saibaba-1977’, ‘Kranti-1981’, ‘Painter Babu-1983’, ‘Kalaakaar-1983’, ‘Ricky-1986’, ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan-1987’, ‘Clerk-1989’, ‘Santosh-1989’, ‘Jai Hind-1999’, ‘Maalik Ek-2010’ etc.

Enjoy this beautiful ‘maata bhajan’ as we are still celebrating the ‘sharadiya navratri festival’ in our country. In the state of ‘Gujarat’, festivities are going on in full swing. Temples and markets have been decorated. Garba’ grounds are especially decorated and people are performing ‘Garbas’ with full religious fervour. Songs and music can be heard on loud speakers (or stereo speakers).
