In this article, I have taken up for discussion an obscure film which had taken a long time to complete. The film had a censor certificate dated April 5, 1991, but it appears that the film did not get a theatrical release. Later, the film was released in the VCD format. I am talking about the film, ‘Lakhpati’ (1991). The film is available for viewing on one of the video sharing platforms.
‘Lakhpati’ (1991) was produced and directed by Jal Baliwala, the name I heard for the first time. The cast included Arun Govil, Shoma Anand, Dr. Shriram Lagoo, Nirupa Roy, Sonia Sahani, Iftekhar, Satyen Kappu, Goga Kapoor, C S Dube, Sarla Yeolekar, Bharat Bhushan, Anita Guha and Madan Puri etc. The songs were written by Akhtar Romani which were set to music by Iqbal Qureshi.
Online websites like http://www.myswar.co, and http://muvyz.com have listed only 3 songs for the film which have been rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur (2 solos by Rafi and one duet by Rafi-Suman). On the basis of the style of musical composition of the songs and taking note of the Rafi-Suman Kalyanpur duet, it appears that these songs were recorded in early 1960s when Lata was not singing with Rafi. However, in the film, there are 3 more songs including one Lata solo. Also in the credit title, the names of Chandru Atma and Anuradha Paudwal appear as playback singers along with Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Suman Kalyanpur.
With the above information, one may conclude that at least 3 songs were recorded in early 1960s by Iqbal Qureshi for a film which may be ‘Lakhpati’ itself which might have been shelved. Later on, the film was revived probably in the second half of 1970s because the lead actors of the film, Arun Govil and Shoma Anand had made their debut as actors in ‘Paheli’ (1977) and ‘Baarood’ (1976), respectively.
I have watched this film which has an average video quality. The film has a duration of about 1:30 hours and it is heavily edited in VCD format. I found watching some of the scenes irrational as for about every 5 minutes there are jumps in the scenes. Nonetheless, I have attempted to set out broadly the story of the film which is as under:
Shashikant (Dr Shreeram Lagoo) works in a bank as a cashier. He lives happily with his wife, Rajjo (Nirupa Roy) and their two school going children, Anil and Lata. His children wants a car and some pocket money so that like their neighbour’s son, Kirit who gets pocket money and travels to school in his father’s car every day, they can also have these facilities. Shashi feels very bad about it as he is not able to fulfill his children’s demands.
In an effort to augment his resources for the betterment of the family, Shashi gets entangled with the bad companies of Mansukhlal (Madan Puri) and Tansukhlal (Satyen Kappu) who give him the ideas to earn more money by gambling and trading in stock market where he incurs heavy losses. He has to sell his wife’s jewelry to make good the losses. Rajjo pleads with Shashi not to do anything to become a millionaire overnight. She now suspects about her husband’s obsession of becoming rich quickly by any means. He has started manipulating the bank’s books to get rich quickly. With that money, he buys a new car and drives to his son’s school to give a surprise to him and to pick him up from the school in his car. However, in his zeal to follow the car, Anil comes under the wheel of the car and dies.
Shashi is yet to recover from the shocking accidental death of his son when the police knocks the door and arrests him for appropriations of bank’s cash and accidentally killing his son. He gets 10-years rigorous imprisonment, leaving his wife and daughter to fend for themselves.
After completion of his jail term, Shashi finds his wife missing as she has become a woman of unsound mind. He finds his daughter, Lata with Jamnabai (Sonia Sahani), a tawaif who treats her as more like a daughter than a tawaif in waiting. Shashi visits Lata. Both recognise each other but decided not to recognise each other for the betterment of the other. In the meanwhile, Kirit often visits to Jamnabai who is more a well-wisher to him than a tawaif. Kirit starts liking Lata and promises her that he will marry her. But this is resented by his father (Iftekhar). However, at the end, the sudden revelation of a relationship between Kirit’s father and Jamnabai during their younger days turns the tide in favour of a reunion between Kirit and Lata.
I have a strong feeling that if the film was available in its full, Dr Shreeram Lagoo would have been the main actor as he is present in most of the scenes. Arun Govil and Shoma Anand comes into the scene almost in the half-way of the film. Even a romantic duet song of Mohammed Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur picturised on them is edited out in the VCD though the video clip of the song is available separately.
I am presenting the first song, ‘nashe mein choor nazar hai mujhe maaf karo’ from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Lata Mangeshkar on the words of Akhtar Romani. Iqbal Qureshi is the music director. The song is picturised on Shoma Anand who is in inebriated state so that Arun Govil starts disliking her by watching her as a tawaif. Sonia Sahani is also seen during the picturisation.
This song is the reminiscence of the 1960s golden period of Hindi film music with a shade of Madan Mohan type of song composition.

nashe mein choor nazar hai mujhe
maaf karo..
ke aaj hosh kidhar hai mujhe

abhi to haath mein aaya hai shaam ka aanchal
abhi to raat ki julfen machaayenge halchal
abhi to door sahar hai mujhe
maaf karo..
nashe mein choor nazar hai mujhe
ye ladkhadaate huye ham kahaan nikal aaye ae
ye pehla pehla safar hai mujhe
maaf karo..
nashe mein choor nazar hai mujhe
samajh ke apna tumhen tumse ham ulajhte hain
nashe mein hote huye bhi tumhen samajhte hain aen
tumhen bhi iski khabar hai mujhe
maaf karo o
nashe mein choor nazar hai mujhe
maaf karo o
nashe mein choor nazar hai mujhe
