Happy Raksha Bandhan to all
There is a minor confusion about the exact date of the sacred behen-bhai festival in my head. Hence, I questioned ‘the all-knowing Google’. This is the reply, hope it is according to the Hindu Panchang as well

Does this mean that, a sister can tie the Rakhi on her brother on 27th itself (as the Tithi has set in), or does she have to wait till the next day. This thought is based on the fact that both 27th & 28th are week days; and with every body being working professionals these days, there is every chance that the siblings will be at work. The closest possibility will be that they will be able to meet only on the weekend. Of course, there will be the few lucky brothers of sisters who stay under the same roof, because they are still students, and generally, schools in most parts of India barring the South, will be closed in honour of the festival. But, there is a large set of grown ups who will miss the tithi and muhurat. Then, there is the case of sisters who are married and stay away from their brothers homes in terms of cities, states and even countries in these modern times. Good luck and Good day to all sisters, may they and/or their Rakhis reach their brothers and also, may the love between the sisters and brothers be forever.
A little background about the festival:
Raksha Bandhan is a popular and traditionally Hindu annual rite or ceremony that is central to a festival of the same name celebrated in South Asia (too!), and among people around the world influenced by Hindu culture. On this day, sisters of all ages tie a talisman or amulet, called the rakhi, around the wrists of their brothers. The sisters symbolically protect the brothers, receive a gift in return, and traditionally invest the brothers with a share of the responsibility of their potential care.
The festival is observed on the last day (mostly; depending on what phase of the moon, the calendar is based on) of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shravana, which typically falls in August. The expression “Raksha Bandhan” (literally, Sanskrit for “the bond of protection, obligation, or care”) is now principally applied to this ritual.
This Purnima (full moon) day is celebrated all over India with different rituals.
In the state of West Bengal, this day is also called ‘Jhulan Purnima’. Prayers and puja of Krishna and Radha are performed there. Sisters tie rakhi to brothers and wish for their long life.
In Maharashtra, among the Koli community, the festival of Raksha Bandhan/Rakhi Pournima is celebrated along with ‘Narali Poornima’ (coconut day festival). Kolis are the fishermen community of the coastal state. The fishermen offer prayers to Varuna, the Hindu god of the sea, to invoke his blessings, and throw coconuts into the sea as offerings to him. The girls and women tie rakhi on their brother’s wrist, as elsewhere.
In Nepal, Raksha Bandhan is referred to as ‘Janai Purnima’ or ‘Rishitarpani’, and involves a sacred thread ceremony. It is observed by both Hindus and Buddhists of Nepal. The Hindu men change the thread they wear around their chests (janai). This is ritual in South India too (this year it has come on 27th of August though). In Odisha, Raksha Bandhan, is called Rakhi Purnima/ ‘Gamha Purnima’. A sister ties rakhi around her brother’s wrist as a mark of love and honour and the brother promises to protect his sister from all the difficulties. The name ‘Gamha Purnima’ refers to the celebration on the same day of the birthday of Lord Balabhadra, considered the god of farming; farmers in Odisha tie rakhis to cattle on this day.
Since this is a post in ATULSONGADAY.me it should have a Hindi film connection.
When I saw the film ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ I learnt that the goddess was a boon for the sons of Lord Ganesha. The film shows that Lord Ganesha had two sons- Shubha & Labha from his two wives – Riddhi & Siddhi. These sons of Ganesha were frustrated that they didn’t have any sister to celebrate the festival. Lord Ganesha agreed, and created a daughter named Santoshi Maa by divine flames that emerged from Ganesh’s wives, Riddhi and Siddhi. Thereafter, Shubha & Labha had a sister named Santoshi Maa (literally “Goddess of Satisfaction”), to tie rakhi on Raksha Bandhan.
The 1945 film ‘Humayun’, starring Ashok Kumar as the Mughal emperor showed ‘The Sibling Bond’ between the emperor and a Rajput queen or princess ‘Karnavati’. She sends a rakhi to Humayun to ask for his protection. Mehboob Khan incorporates this popular historical anecdote.
There are other films, that have behen-bhai love as the center of their plots. We have all behens singing songs as they tie Rakhis on the wrist of their brothers.
Bhaiya mere raakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana was the first song connected with the festival to be posted on the blog (I think) Since then, in the last 18 years of the blog, we have had 26-28 songs related to the festival.

I began writing this post in the morning of 26th of August. Then got caught up in the preparation and festivities of Onam (which was on 26th) followed by 27th August which went off in celebrating Aavani Avittam (in the 1st half of the day); which is essentially DHANISHTA nakshatra of the Shravan month which is ‘Janai Purnima’ in Nepal (as I have written in a paragraph above)
27th August is also my Aunt’s (chachi) birthday so the afternoon and evening went in celebrating that. I took the opportunity to tie Rakhis to my brothers . Technically, as per what I discovered on Google, the Purnima Tithi has already started at 9 in the morning of 27th. I have also sent my Rakhis to my other brothers by post. Hope all them do well in LIFE. I feel blessed to have so many brothers.
I also like how, in India, maasi ka ladka bhi Bhai hai, chacha/ kaka ke ladke bhi bhai hai. None of them are addressed by the impersonal English term “cousin”.
The clock has just struck 12 and the calendar shows 28th August. So it is officially HAPPY RAKSHA BANDHAN to all.
RAKSHA BANDHAN (2022) was a Hindi family comedy-drama film directed by Aanand L. Rai and written by Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon. It was a remake of the 2005 Bengali film ‘Dadar Adesh’. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Sadia Khateeb, Sahil Mehta, Sahejmeen Kaur, Smrithi Srikanth and Deepika Khanna.
The film was theatrically released on 11 August 2022, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day. It received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics. I saw it recently on satellite television. I felt it is okay, can be seen once.
The film was the story of a brother who has four sisters and how he takes care of their need through his youth; to the extent of putting his personal needs, love and life on hold. So that he can fulfill the dreams of his sisters. There is an angle of the evils of Dowry also in the story.
The songs of the film were composed Himesh Reshammiya and Irshad Kamil was the lyricist The song with this post is in the voice of Shreya Ghoshal.
