Today, 19 July 2024, is a special day for the blog. It was on this date 16 years ago that this blog had come into existence with its debut post “Miley Na Phool To Kaanton Se Dosti Kr Li” on 19 July 2008. We have come a long way in the blog from that small beginning. On this occasion, we will have quite a few posts today to celebrate the occasion. Keep watching this blog throughout the day.

Ah, before anything about this song, the important start to this day is the Congratulations that must be given today, to all the readers of this blog, to all the members of this musical bandwagon, and most importantly, to dear dear Atul ji. Today, we begin the 17th year of this wondrous and overwhelming musical journey, that Atul ji had initiated 16 years ago. The year was 2008, and on the 19th July of that year, Atul ji had made the first post on this blog.
The title of the song contained in that first post is quite unassuming and almost self effacing. Like a lonely pilgrim starting off on an uncertain and a lonesome endeavor – “I made thorns as my friends, for the flowers did not come along with me” – “Miley Na Phool To Kaanton Se Dosti Kr Li“. Little did he know, little had he visualized, what a stupendous character and structure, and what a famous existence this humble beginning would transform into, in the months and years to follow. The beginning was without any grandiose plans, without any ostentatious vision of where this journey would lead to. Literally, as the poet Shailendra has said,

Yes, the direction was unclear that day, the destination was unknown. By his own admission, Atul ji had expected that this blog effort to post Hindi film songs would maybe last for a couple of thousand songs, maximum of 2,500 at the utmost. And then it would be running out of steam, and come to a tired halt, not aware where to go next.
Goodness, how much in error he was on that fateful day of 19th July, way back in 2008. And truly, he had no way of looking so far in the future to take any comfort that the modest beginning he was making with the support of dear dear Raja ji, would be of any reckoning beyond his own humble estimates. And surely enough, it is the ‘upar waala‘ who knew what is to become of this unassuming effort started by a railways engineer.
And I must say – boy, are we glad that he was in such an error that day, that he was so far off the mark as to what this expedition would transform into over the years. And so are the hundreds and thousands of people on this planet, who come and visit this blog on a daily basis. The visitors counter on this has crossed the 16.5 million hits over a period of these eventful and interesting 16 years. Atul-Song-a-Day has become the definitive musical destination on the internet, a blog that registers about 2,800 visits on a daily basis. The footfall on our blog is a matter of envy for other websites and blogs of every ilk on the worldwide net.
I have said this before on these pages, and I repeat it again today – it is a matter of great pride that the encounters with the readers and visitors of this blog, are continuously increasing. In so many fora, and musical groups, when I introduce myself as being associated with this blog, it is so heartening to hear the other person respond by saying – ‘Oh yes, Atul-Song-a-Day. Wow, you are part of that team. I am a regular visitor, and I go there whenever I need information about Hindi Film Music’, or something similar in effect. Yes, over the years the blog has become the most respected and authoritative source for information and data on HFM on the internet. A compendium treasure for the fans of this art form who will visit this blog with confidence, to get the information they need.
The numbers now have a lesser significance than before. In meetings of musical groups or in presentations, when I mention that we have reviewed and cataloged more than eighteen thousand HFM songs, one can see the visible rising of eyebrows, surprised gasps of appreciation and a lot of heads nodding in acknowledgement – wow, eighteen thousand posts. And when I add that we do not repeat a song, then comes the second gasp of surprise. And to tell you the truth, I quite enjoy that moment of surprise and declaration.
Atul ji’s unflagging attention and time that he spends on this blog is a thing of prime wonder. The steadfastness and loyalty that shines through his efforts is truly remarkable. And equally remarkable is the dedicated and unfaltering support in terms of contributions by the entire bandwagon that has come together over the years. Mention must be made, and has to be made, of the name of our dear Arun ji Deshmukh, whose intensity of research, and prolific contributions have only been getting better and more voluminous with the passing years. Yes, the team effort here is remarkable and unparalleled in terms of the longevity of the belief with which this group continues its march towards newer and higher milestones on this journey of musical bonanza.

Coming the song in this post. Goodness, how did I miss this earlier. Actually, I had started the series with another song, which has been reused in the same film. On 25th May of 2019 (o goodness, this series itself is now aged 5, wow) I had posted the song “Aa Ja Re Pardesi, Main To Kab Se Khadi Is Paar“, originally from film ‘Madhumati’ (1958), which has been reused inn ‘Guddi’ of 1971, picturised on Jaya Bhaduri. I was aware of the snippet reuse of this song also, but then it just slipped from the mind. Came back into focus recently, and so a great help to populate this congratulatory post for today.
The film ‘Guddi’ is about the fascination that school children have for films and the actors who perform in them. Kusum, pet name Guddi, (role played by Jaya Bhaduri) is high school student, who is so totally smitten with the actor Dharmendra, that she tells her family never to try to get her married, for she has already, in her mind and heart, taken the he-man Dharamendra as her husband forever. This announcement is a disaster for the family who are kind of in the process to start looking for a match for her. And actually, there is someone already identified. Naveen (role played by Samit Bhanj), the brother of Kusum’s bhabhi (sister-in-law, role played by Sumita Sanyal), is the willing suitor who is much in love with Kusum. But the latter’s announcement leaves everyone in a confused lurch.
Then Naveen takes help of his uncle (role played by Utpal Dutt). This uncle is a friend of Dharmendra [Ed Note: Real life Dharmendra; he plays himself in this film]. And so a very interesting set of events is arranged wherein Kusum goes to Bombay, meets with Dharmendra, and spends time with him during his shooting schedule, and gets to see and experience first hand, the reality of the tinsel town and the cine world. Her misconceptions of the glamour, the beauty and the invincibility of larger-than-life aura of the actors, who are also after all, ordinary human beings, begin to fade. This visit to Bombay brings, for Kusum, the real world view of reel life, and she is able to shed her fascination for the world of cinema and her idol Dharmendra.
This song, which is originally from the film ‘Asli Naqli’ of 1962, is used as a snippet in this film. It is a sequence in which Kusum is imagining that she is romancing with Dharmendra and also getting married to him. No she is not asleep and dreaming. She is wide awake and imagining the amorous sequences with her heart throb hero – a dream of wide awake eyes.
A very interesting sequence and a very interesting reuse of this wonderful romantic song originally created by the team of Hasrat Jaipuri and Shanker Jaikishan. The original singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Lata Mangeshkar. The song has been reused without any changes and so the original credits for the song are retained. Only change is the actors who perform this song on screen.
