#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————

‘Santosh-1989’ was an ‘East-n-West Movies’ presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan. It had Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar, and others. Story of ‘Santosh-1989’ was written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by V.V. Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik). Cinematography was done by Rajan Kinagi. ‘Santosh-1989’ was passed by Censor board on 28.02.1989.

Here is a brief about this movie which I had mentioned earlier as taken from IMDB. (I have added the artistes’ name to their character name in the movie there.)

Cold-hearted and manipulative Kamla (Nirupa Roy) has fallen in love with a poor man (Krishan Dhawan) and marries him and has a child named Santosh. She soon realizes that life is not fun living in poverty, and abandons her child and husband, and returns back to her father and his wealth. She re-marries millionaire Kailashpathi (Pinchoo Kapoor), and has a child named Kundan (Prem Chopra) from him. Years pass by; Kundan and Santosh have both grown up. Kundan is the owner of the mill with his mom, while Santosh is a struggling mill worker, and a union leader. A confrontation ensues between the mill and the workers, and Kamla is able to negotiate a settlement and get the workers back to work. But then, she fails to keep her promise to the workers. Santosh opposes this, and she sets her goons and Kundan against him. Santosh is abducted and held prisoner by Kamla and Kundan, and the only way he can be released is when he compromises with them. What happens next? Is to be watched on the screen or on internet (now) … 🙂

(I hope to come back with a detailed story of this movie on the blog soon. But, till then we have to wait 🙂 ).

This movie had seven songs written by Santosh Anand (six songs) and Manoj Kumar (one song). Following is the list of songs this movie had.

From the above table we can see that five songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog. I have myself presented few of the above songs with my write-up on the blog.
Today I am presenting a melodious song from this movie sung by Lata Mangeshkar which on screen is performed by Hema Malini. In the movie there is a situation where Kavita (Hema Malini) who is working at ‘TV Center’ (Doordarshan?) is asked to give her performance on the occasion of ‘janmashtami’ next day. She had already given such performance the earlier year which was well appreciated by all. When the lady officer (I am forgetting the name of the actress) conveys her about this message from the programme director, Kavita gets lost in the memory of her performance given the previous year which is this song that appears on screen. This is a song about Lord Krishna and his ‘krishn leela’ where he used to tease the ‘gopikaas’ when they are fetching water in earthen pots from the river, and where he breaks their pots by throwing stone on them. In our Hindi movies we have several movies made which are related to Lord Krishna and his stories. And we also have several songs made on the ‘eternal love story’ of Radha and Krishna. Today on the occasion ‘janmashtami’ festival here is another song related to Lord Krishna and his ‘krishna leela’.

The video link available of this song is a shorter one while the audio version is a longer audio link. We can see Hema Malini lip-syncing in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar and performing on this song on screen. Also seen in the picturisation of this song is Manoj Kumar and many others present there. The lyrics presented here in the post are as per the audio link of this song. The singer of the today’s song is Lata Mangeshkar. Lyrics are by Santosh Anand and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Let us listen to this beautiful song now …
