Hullo Atuldom

“Ek Chadar Maili Si” is a classic Urdu novella written by Rajinder Singh Bedi. It was a story of a tradition in Punjab, as part of which, the younger brother weds his elder brother’s widow upon the latter’s death. This tradition is called ‘chadar daalna’. Compelled by custom and physical force, the male protagonist of ‘Ek Chadar Maili Si’ weds his sister-in-law.

Rajinder Singh Bedi was born on 1st September 1915 (it was his 109th birth anniversary a few days back.) He was an Indian Urdu writer of the progressive writers’ movement and a playwright, who later worked in Hindi cinema as a film director, screenwriter and dialogue writer.

As a screenwriter and dialogue writer, he is best known for Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films “Abhimaan”, “Anupama” and “Satyakam”; and Bimal Roy’s “Madhumati”. As a director he is known for “Dastak” (1970), starring Sanjeev Kumar and Rehana Sultan and “Phagun” (1973), starring Dharmendra, Waheeda Rehman, Jaya Bhaduri and Vijay Arora. He wrote his scripts in Urdu, like a number of other prominent screenwriters at the time.

Narender Bedi, his son, was also a film maker – ‘Jawani Deewani’, ‘Rafoo Chakkar’, ‘Benaam’, ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ being some of the films he made. Rajat Bedi & Manek Bedi, Rajinder Singh Bedi’s grandsons are also actors.
G.M. Singh Nindrajog was the producer of “Ek Chadar Maili Si” in 1986 & it was directed by Sukhwant Dhadda. The film was an adaptation of Rajinder Singh Bedi’s ‘1965 Sahitya Akademi Award’ winning novella of the same name. It had music by Anu Malik and Makhan Singh, Sudarshan Faakir, Sardar Pancchi & Faooq Qaiser were the lyricists. Asha Bhonsle, Dilraj Kaur, Shabbir Kumar, Gurcharan Kaur Bagan & Mohd Aziz were the playback singers used.

The cast of the film was headed by Hema Malini, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rishi Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon with Dina Pathak, A.K. Hangal, Geeta Siddharth, Shammi, Adarsh Gautam, Sohni etc playing important characters. An interesting trivia that I read on the internet is that Ramjinder Singh Bedi himself had planned to make this film in the 1960s with Geeta Bali & Dharmendra in the lead but dropped the idea when Geeta Bali passed away.

This film was touted as a change of image for Hema Malini, Rishi Kapoor & Poonam Dhillon (hers was supposed to be a grey-shaded character.) For Rishi Kapoor it was a departure from his chocolate-boy romantic image. I don’t think the film did well at the box-office.

Today on the occasion of Chintu a.k.a Rishi Kapoor’s 72nd birth anniversary we have this film making its debut on the blog with a song written by Sardar Panchhi (new name for me, don’t know if others have heard of this writer) & sung by Asha Bhonsle & Shabbir Kumar. The song was decently well heard on the radio waves in the late 1980s. Onscreen it is lip-synced by Poonam & Rishi Kapoor before the story takes a turn towards graver issues.

Missing the lover-boy of the 1970s, 1980s & early 1990s and his bright sweaters/chardigans/ mufflers who went on to play diverse characters post the turn of the century.

Lyrics

log to mandir masjid jaayen
dhoondhen patthar sil mein
aashiq ko rab nazar aaye ae
mahboob ke kaale til mein

kyun ye usko van van dhoondhe
kyun ye teerath jaaye
aashiq ka rab to rehta hai ae
khud aashiq ke dil mein

koi sona koi chaandi
koi peetal bhari paraat ve
dharti ko kalai kara de
naachoongi saari raat ve
o o

koi sona koi chaandi

na sona na chaandi
na peetal bhari paraat ni
mere sur mein taal mila de
gaaunga saari raat ni

Sardar Panchi ( Karnail Singh ) was a reputed poet who wrote in Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi.

WARIS, 1988, is the other movie with his lyrics.

Thank you Pradeep Shettyji for pointing to other known works of Sardar Panchhi. I looked up ‘Waaris’ 1988 and found that that was also made from a Punjabi short story. Also that two songs in that film were by this lyricist
