Hullo Atuldom

For this post, I should thank our trusted Doordarshan National channel. I saw ‘Doosri Dulhan’ (which had had its theatrical release on 14th October 1983) in the day. Found a song in it, where the concerned actress played a character which was almost similar to the character she had played in the film ‘Mandi’ (1983) don’t know if she shot for the two films simultaneously or which film followed which film!!!. Also, the way she played the character reminded me, briefly, of Sharmila Tagore from ‘Mausam’ (1975).

All of the above will give a hint about which actress I am talking of. Shabana Azmi. She played a prostitute/ brothel owner in ‘Mandi’ as also in ‘Doosri Dulhan’. The way she portrayed it was almost like Kajli (Sharmila Tagore’s street-walker character) of ‘Mausam’.

‘Doosri Dulhan’ has Sharmila Tagore and Victor Bannerjee playing a couple who are sad after the wife has a miscarriage and discovers she can’t have children ever again. They hit upon the thought that they can take help of a ‘surrogate’ mother, but without knowledge of friends & family. They seek the services of Chanda (Shabana Azmi) who is initially reluctant but falls for the lure of lump sum money at the end of the contract. The family shifts to a hill station for the period of the surrogacy.  To start off, the husband finds the situation uncomfortable but complies for his wife’s happiness. The film goes through the usual gamut of the husband developing a soft corner for Chanda, the wife getting insecure in the situation and the surrogate mother feeling motherly towards the child she has borne. I will not tell what the end was.

I was amazed by the beauty of both the ladies. This was Victor Bannerjee’s fourth appearance in Hindi films, his earlier films being ‘Shatranj Ke Khilari’ (1977), ‘Kalyug’ (1981) and ‘Aarohan’ (1982), besides appearing in English (1), German (1) and Bangla (2) films before this.

I am not aware of the film’s fate at the box office, but when the same story was remade in 2001 as ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ with Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta and Salman Khan in lead roles, it was lapped up by the audiences.

Today’s song happens when Chanda is bored in her new environment. She breaks into a dance (very unusual for Shabana Azmi who is not known for her dances) and has the whole neighborhood for audience. Sudhir Dalvi plays the family retainer, who is also seen in the song.

The song is in the voice of Asha Bhosle, written by Amit Khanna and composed by Bappi Lahiri.
With this song we are wishing Shabana Azmi on turning a year older on 18th September.

Lyrics (Provided by Sudhir)

mera sainyaan itna bhaari
main maari gayi bechari

o mera sainyaan itna bhaari

main maari gayi bechaari
deti rahi duhaai
hui na sunvaai
ui maa
vicharu naka kaay jhaala
o maaza sang kaay jhaala

o mera sainyaan itna bhaari
main maari gayi bechaari

aankhon mein thi uski sharaarat
dekha to ye jaana
aana kaani ki ham ne to
par wo zulmi na maana
aankhon mein thi uski sharaarat
dekha to ye jaana
aana kaani ki ham ne to
par wo zulmi na maana
chhodi nahin kalaai
hui khoob ladaai
ui maa
vicharu naka kaay jhaala
o maaza sang kaay jhaala

o mera sainyaan itna bhaari
main maari gayi bechari

main roothi to wo bola
dekh le aaunga ik sautan
samajh gayi main us ke ishaare
chup ho gai main fauran
main roothi to wo bola
dekh le aaunga ik sautan
samajh gayi main us ke ishaare
chup ho gai main fauran
band ki ladaai
hui khoob jagaai
ui maa
vicharu naka kaay jhaala
o maaza sang kaay jhaala

o mera sainyaan itna bhaari
main maari gayi bechari
ui maa
