Hullo Atuldom
Two years back, on this date I had sent this song to pay tribute to two legends of Bollywood a.k.a. Hindi film world. It was from the 1979 released Harmesh Malhotra directed & Gullu Sippy produced “Bagula Bhagat”. The cast was as follows: Ashok Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Shabana Azmi, Kamini Kaushal, Padma Khanna, Mehmood Jr. etc At that time, I had seen a short part of the film and thought I had spied Anwar Hussien & Goga Kapoor as his henchman. It had music by Kalyanji Anandji and songs written by Anjaan. Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Amit Kumar and Asha Bhonsle were the playback singers used in the 4 songs.
The reason behind my sharing that particular song was 13th October is the birth anniversary of Dada Moni a.k.a. Ashok Kumar and the death anniversary of Kishore Kumar famous as the Ganguly Brothers.
We all have heard of the instance when Kishore Kumar was upset with his mother for paying extra attention to Ashok Kumar, who he thought was just another guest. This was because of a large gap in the ages of the two brothers, and they were meeting for the first time. We also know that their father was a lawyer, as also they were 3 brothers- Anup Kumar was the third.
Ashok Kumar was the first lead actor to play an anti-hero. He also became the first star to reinvent himself, enjoying a long and hugely successful career as a character actor. He was a Padma Shri (1962) and a Padma Bhushan (1999) winner. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1988. His debut as an actor was ‘Jeevan Naiyya’ in 1936 and final appearance was in a Shakti Samanta produced & Ashim Samantha directed bilingual ‘Ankhon Mein Tum Ho’ in Hindi & ‘Achena Athithi’ in Bengali, these came in 1997 (a career of 61 years)
Ashok Kumar was the lead in Kishore Kumar’s first film ‘Shikari’ (1946). Kishore Kumar’s first as a lead actor was ‘Andolan’ in 1951. He was successful as an actor but his first love was playback singing. He had won 8 Filmfare Best Playback Singer awards of the 28 time that he was nominated, which is a record.
Kishoreda (as he was affectionately called) was also a music director. He produced & directed movies that were divergent in their theme & content- “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, “Door Ka Rahi”, “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein”, “Shaabash Daddy”, “Badti Ka Naam Daadi” etc. (this list is self explanatory). His last recorded song was under Bappi Lahiri’s music direction in 1987.
Today on the occasion of the birthdate of Ashok Kumar and death anniversary of Kishoreda we will have a song lip-synced by Dada Moni & sung by the younger brother. It is a club song where Padma Khanna is shaking a leg almost like in this song from “Ek Se Badkar Ek”.
Here is the song from “Bagula Bhagat”(1979) picturised on the lovable Ashok Kumar who was nearing 70 then. Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar sing for Padma Khanna and Ashok Kumar respectively.
