We have seen in the past that some of the obscure movies, ‘B’ grade movies and even ‘C’ grade movies have given us many musical gems. This has been happening from the beginning of Hindi Film Music History.
The song under discussion is one such song, which according to me deserves to be a better known song, if not a well known song. Like most music lovers, I too was unaware of this song till recently. This song is from an obscure movie from the decade of seventies. The title of the movie is ‘Hazaar Haath-1978’.
“Hazaar Haath-1978” was directed by Rajdeep for ‘Rajdeep Productions, Bombay’. It had Rajdeep, Nargis Banoo, Rajanibala, Shraddha, Mrinal Mukherjee, Seema Kapoor, Sukhdev Dhamija, Gautam Bhatia, Heera Patel, M. Shafi, Amal Sen, Daisy, Indu Irani and others. Tabrez, Bharat Kapoor, Devendra, Johny Whiskey, and Kishore Kapoor had a special appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 20.11.1978. Few people may have been aware of this movie when it was released. Neither I nor my friends were aware of the existence of this movie and its songs when this movie was released.
“Hazaar Haath-1978”has six songs in it which were shared among lyricists Naqsh Lyallpuri, Qamar Jalalabadi and Kafil Azar (one song each) and Rajdeep ( three songs). The singers list for this movie includes voices of Nitin Mukesh, Mohd Rafi, Sharda, Mahesh Chandra, Anwar, and Akhtar Azad Qawwal, Yesudas, Sharda and Preeti Sagar. Music for this movie is composed by the well-known singer Sharda. So today we get introduced one more movie which has the music composed by Sharda.
The lyricist for the today’s song is Naqsh Lyallpuri and as usual for him he has written some very meaningful verses in this song. This is the reason that I want this song to be a part of this series of mine on Lyricist Naqsh Lyallpuri.
The other reason for the today’s song is its singer. The singer of this song is one of the special voices from the seventies and that is singer Anwar. He made his debut in Hindi Movies with the song ‘Kasmein ham apni jaan ki khaaye chale gaye’ from ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz-1973’. When he recorded his first song he was just twenty years old. His songs in the movie ‘Janta Hawaldaar-1979’ were liked very much and later on he went on singing notable songs in movies like ‘Qurbaani-1980’, ‘Aahistaa Aahista-1981’, ‘Naseeb-1981’, ‘Prem Rog-1982’, ‘Vidhaata-1982’, ‘Arpan-1983’, ‘Sohni Mahiwal -1984’, ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab-1984’, ‘Ye Ishq Nahin Aasan-1984’, ‘Heer Raanjha-1992’, etc.
However his career in Hindi movies didn’t progress as one would have expected. Circumstances and misfortune conspired to see him getting sidelined and forgotten. On our blog we have so far around twenty-two songs sung by Anwar posted so far.
Let us now listen to this beautiful composition of Sharda sung by Anwar and penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri. With this song this movie ‘Hazaar Haath-1978’ makes its debut on the blog.
