Chamkke paseena ban ke nageena (Reshami Ki Dori)(1974) Lyrics by Avinash Scarpwala. Dharmendra’s 78th birthday

The above is not an attempt at any ‘Blog-Ten Year Challenge’. I was just looking up to see what were the films that appeared on the blog on that day ten years ago(8 december 2013) and the “YYIIPPEEEE” status of those movies.

Movie (Year) Songs status of the movie
Anaath Asharam(1937) 3 songs out of 15
Subah Ka Taara(1954) yyiippeeeed
Neel Kamal( 1947) yyiippeeeed
Resham Ki Dori(1974) 3 songs out of 6

Recently, the blog touched 18100. In that post, Atulji pointed out that in the 79 days between post number 18000 & 18100 my small contribution was 16 posts. That means 16 songs in 12 weeks. And I was surprised that it is a case of some week having more than one song; this must have happened in the month of October when a few of my favourite heroes, heroines & singers had their birthdays & death anniversaries. But one thing is for sure, the frequency of my writing is erratic and I don’t know what excuses to offer. But here is taking fresh guard after my last, which was my 600th post.

“Gehri Chot” (1983) was initially released with the title “Door Desh” in March 1983 (as per some sites on the internet). The YouTube link for the film shows date of certificate issue as 30-11-1983; that confuses me further- how can the film release before getting a censor certificate.

On researching a little in the KNOWLEDGE BOX that the blog has become I found “Paanch Dushman” (1973) to be an almost similar case i.e. it was re-released with the title “Daulat Ke Dushman” in 1981. The reasons for the two title-changed re-release may be different but they may make an interesting case study.

Shall call the film “Door Desh”, as mentioned in the censor certificate, and the titles of the film starts as ‘Gehri Chot’ urf ‘Door Desh’. The film is listed on IMDB as an action-crime-drama & was an Indian- Canadian film directed by Ambrish Sangal; who was an assistant to J. Om Prakash during ‘Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke’ ; ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ etc. & later went on to make ‘Aatish’; ‘Aap toh aise na the’; ‘Dard’; ‘Suraag’ etc.

“Door Desh” had Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Raj Babbar, Parveen Babi, Nadeem Baig, Bobita (not to be confused with the Kapoor bahu Babita), David Abraham (in one of his last roles, he had already retired & settled in Canada by then) etc.

Bobita (Farida Akhtar Poppy) was an award winning Bangaldeshi actress, from her filmography it is evident that she has been active till 2015 as actress & is also a producer. Nadeem Baig (Mirza Nazeer Baig) is a Pakistani actor, singer, & producer regarded as the best all-time Pakistani actor in Heroic roles, and he is still working in films & television. “Door Desh” opens with a dedication to David Abraham who had died on 2nd January 1982, i.e. before the film released.

Usha Khanna was the music director & Indeevar the lyricist. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Chandrani Mukherjee, Yesudas, Anwar & Usha Khanna (herself). Story -screenplay- dialogue was by Suraj Sanim.
The film was the story of an NRI (Shashi Kapoor) from Toronto who comes to India to marry a traditional Indian woman (Sharmila Tagore). The film then goes on to the adjustment problems the couple face & their separation after the birth of their kids- the son (Raj Babbar on growing up)goes back to India with the mother & daughter (Bobita) stays with the father. The family comes together 20 years later when there is a crisis, as the daughter has been kidnapped. The mother comes with the son to help trace the daughter.

Sharmila Tagore, whose birthday is on 8th December, made her debut in films through Bengali films in 1959. Her first Hindi film was in 1964 ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ with Shammi Kapoor as her hero. 1965 was the first time she was paired with Shashi Kapoor, in B.R. Film’s ‘Waqt’.

The two of them were seen in 11 movies after that :-
Aamne Saamne (1967), Suhana Safar (1970), My Love (1970), Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973), Paap Aur Punya (1974), Anari (1975), Gehri Chot urf Door Desh (1983), New Delhi Times, Maa Beti, Swati (all in 1986), Hum Toh Chale Pardes (1988).

Shashi Kapoor stopped acting in films sometime in the 1980s, but he did direct ‘Ajooba’ in 1990. He was seen in two Merchant-Ivory films in 1993 & 1998 and a British-Pakistani film, also in 1998. He died on 4th December 2017 due to liver & heart complications.

Thinking of the sweet & charming Shashi Kapoor today. Also wishing Sharmila Tagore all happiness & good health on her special day.

Hullo Atuldom

Logon Ki Zubaan Par Apna Naam Hai Pehla” – this post of mine spoke of how I made it to the Gangout of like-minded HFM lovers who also go by the name ‘Atulites’ of ‘Atuldom’. How Sudhir ji set the ball rolling in the beginning of May and after numerous back-n-forth messages (at that time I was not a party to the discussions) June 2nd was fixed as the date for the Gangout. I was happy that I could attend the Gangout & be a part of the enthusiastic group that is highly knowledgeable about all things related to music – not necessarily only Hindi Films, especially finding new information & saving it up for posterity.

Our in-house Encyclopedia ji has lots of information saved up as hand-written notes which he is sharing regularly on this blog as also a few other sites on-line, so we can say he is digitalizing available knowledge. Then Sudhir ji – he is helping Atulji in uploading information-laden posts & also taking back-up of all the material available on this blog onto a hard-drive which contains all the songs & posts available on the blog up until that date – meaning the hard drive has 17800 posts which accompany the 27000 songs with all versions that are present on the blog. (This in addition to whatever it takes to be gainfully employed.) Just two examples, there are others in this bandwagon.

Like Avinash ji has said two years ago, in his post for the song “Main Nikla O Gaddi Le Ke“. Atul ji is the ‘engine’ that is driving this train – the blog. The coaches of the train or the ‘wagons’ of the bandwagon are the team members who are on this exciting journey of exploring & discussing HFM & some non-film music too.

I noticed a few more things on the day of the Gangout. Atul ji is a good listener; doesn’t speak much. It is the best way to gather knowledge. No wonder his posts are full of statistics, news & gives updated background on whatever topic he writes on. He listened attentively when Bakshish ji spoke about how he became a huge bhakt of the legend KL Saigal. He was with us barely for 4 and a half hours which I personally felt was too little. I would have liked to hear him speak his mind too. I was waiting for his ‘Atulisms’ (a term coined by our Raja ji). May be next time.

Since after the Gangout, I have been looking for a song that would describe the feeling of Gang vis-a-vis Atul ji. And I don’t why the word jamghat was fixed in my head as a possible word in the song. I know jamghat doesn’t mean group (mandli), it means a crowd. But I still kept looking for a song that had that word. I sent out ‘help’ message to Avinash ji. I must thank Avinash ji for pointing to today’s song.

The song does showcase what Atulites feel for Atul ji :-

tumhe jamghata aashiqon ka milega
magar koi mujhsa nahi milega

Meaning ‘you will find admirers all round but none like me‘.

Personally, I would like to change a few words in the mukhda of today’s song

aapko jamghata aashiqon ka milega
magar atulites sa nahi milega

After Avinash ji sent me the YouTube link to the song I looked up for details of the song. I found that it was from an absolutely obscure film ‘Padosi Ki Biwi’, that came in 1988. The name of the film itself would have been a put off and I am sure the movie would have sank without a trace as the title sounds like that of a ‘C’ grade movie. The film was directed by Mohan Bhakri and produced by Chandresh U. Doshi. Looking up for details about Mohan Bhakri came up with facts that he is related to Manoj Kumar, Lekhraj Bhakri etc. i.e. he is cousin to Manoj Kumar and nephew to Lekhraj Bhakri. I also found that Mohan Bhakri has directed some forgettable films like ‘Khooni Murda’ (1989), ‘Kabrastaan’ (1988) etc.

Then I looked for the star cast – Deepak Parashar, Asha Sachdev, Pooja Saxena, Jawed Khan (not the Javed Khan who got famous in the 1986 TV serial ‘Nukkad’), Raza Murad, Satish Kaul, Madhu Malhotra etc were part of this film. Usha Khanna was the music director & Hasrat Jaipuri was the lyricist. The song today is in the voices of Anwar and Anuradha Paudwal; such greats wasted in this type of film was my personal thought. I dared not look for the synopsis of the film.

Before we get to the song, let me reiterate what I have said in my post on this date last year-

Thanking Atul ji for taking us along with him on this grand journey of music & knowledge sharing. Thanking his also for giving us this platform and encouraging novices like me into writing out our thoughts. As always, I wish he gets more time with his family, pets, friends, music and the blog.

Wishing Atul ji – A Very Happy Birthday, and Many Many Happy Returns of this Special Day.

tumhen jamghata aashiqon ka milega

tumhen mehfilen aashiqon ki milengi
magar koi mujh si mili na milegi

tum jahaan bhi jaaogi
sab hi tumko chaahenga
apna sar jhukaayenge

dhal gaya shabaab to
chhod ke wo jaayega

dikhaawe ki wo sirf aahen bharenge
tumhen jamghata aashiqon ka milega
magar koi mujh sa mila na milega

tum ho meri aarzoo
tum ho meri justju
tum ho meri aabroo
tum ho mere rubaru
tum na dil ko todna
saath ye na chhodna
tum ko pyaar ki kasam
munh na mujhse modna
oo oo oo
tumhen chaahne waale laakhon milenge
magar koi mujh si mili na milegi
tumhen mehfilen aashiqon ki milengi
magar koi mujh si mili na milegi

koi mujh sa dhoondh ke
dikhaaiye dikhaaiye
tum pe jo bhi mar mitey
aisa le ke aaiye
tum kaho to jaan doon
ik ishaara kijiye
imtihaan pyaar ka
lijiye ji lijiye
oo oo oo
salaam e mohabbat tumhen sab karenge
janaaza na dekhogi lekin marenge
tumhen jamghata aashiqon ka milega
magar koi mujh sa mila na milega
tumhen mehfilen aashiqon ki milengi
magar koi mujh si mili na milegi

(Belated Birthday Wishes- Singer Anwar)

In this post, we belatedly wish Singer Anwar a ‘very happy birthday and a healthy, prosperous, and peaceful life ahead’.

His birth anniversary was on 1st of February. He was born on 1st February’1949 in Mumbai.

I had earlier presented a detailed post about Anwar and his songs and the memories of such songs for me in my series ‘The Special Voices of the Decade of Seventies’ on the blog here. (Interested readers can read this post with this song ‘haseen haseen waadiyon’…on the blog).

Today I am not going to repeat all the details here again. But I would simply come back to the today’s song which is from the movie ‘Noorie-1979’. I like this song very much and its singing by Anwar is also very very nice.

“Noorie-1979” was directed by Manmohan Krishna for ‘Yashraj Films’.

It had Farookh Shaikh, Poonam Dhillon, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Manmohan Krishna, Padma Khanna, Geeta Siddharth, Javed Khan, Bharat Kapoor, Vikas Anand, Khairu (Dog, Trained by Amar Babu), Pardesi, Shakeel, Mahan, Master Devendra, Avtar Gill, Murari, Ramesh Yadav, Tiger (Dog) and others.

(This movie was passed by Censor Board on 01.05.1979).

“Noorie-1979” had five songs written by Jaanisar Akhtar (three songs), Majrooh Sultanpuri (one song) and Naqsh Lyallpuri (one song).

Music for this movie was composed by Khayyam.

The detail of the songs included in this movie is as given below.

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Aa ja re o mere dilbar aa ja Lata, Nitin Mukesh 05.05.2013

05 Uske khel niraale wo hi jaane, allaah jaane ae Anwar, Jagjit Kaur, Pamela Chopra Song under discussion in this post

As we can see in the above table, so far, three songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog.

Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be presented on the blog. It is sung by Anwar and on screen it is lip synced by Manmohan Krishna. The song also has the voices of Jagjit Kaur and Pamela Chopra which on screen are lip synced by two child actors (whom I am unable to identify). Also chorus is included in the song.

Farookh Shaikh, Geeta Siddharth can be seen present there in the picturisation of this song and also Bharat Kapoor and others can be seen while Manmohan Krishna performs on this song.

We once again wish a belated ‘Happy Birthday to Anwar’ and listen to this song sung by him today…

He might have sung less numbers of song, but majority of them are close to our hearts and his special voice will always have a special place in our hearts forever …

Let us now listen to the today’s song …

Blog Day :

5058 Post No. : 16972

Today 24th May’2022 is the (1 October 1919 − 24 May 2000) twenty-second ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ of legendary lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri.

On our blog more than one thousand one hundred songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri are already posted.

Today 24th May’2022 is sixty-seventh birth anniversary (born on 24th May’1955) of Music Director (& lyricist too) Rajesh Roshan.
As per statistics mentioned on the blog Rajesh Roshan has composed music for more than 842 songs. Out of these 842 songs, 153 songs are covered in the blog.

Majrooh Sultanpuri as a lyricist, and Rajesh Roshan as a music-director have collaborated in many movies. They have given Hindi Films many memorable compositions.

Their association started with Rajesh Roshan’s debut movie ‘Kunwaaraa Baap-1974’ and continued till ‘Kya Kehna-2000’, in between delivering many hit, popular and memorable songs.

Today we are going to listen to one such composition where the lyrics are written by Majrooh ji and music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The today’s song is from the movie ‘Janta Hawaldar-1979’.

“Jantaa Hawaldaar-1979” was directed by Mehmood for ‘Balaji Pictures, Bombay’.

It was produced by Manoherlal P. Chhabria and Manoher P. Jaisingh.

It had Ashok Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Yogita Bali, Kanhaiyyalal, Shailendra, Leela Chitnis, Lalita Pawar, Dhoomal, Sunder, Mohan Choti, Coca Cola, Bhushan Tiwari, Shobhana, Narendra Nath, Shobha Khote, Mehmood and others.

Hema Malini had a ‘above all’ appearance in this movie.

Abrar Alvi was the writer of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Vishwanath Narvekar. Story of this movie was written by Mehmood.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1979.

Here is a brief about this movie as mentioned on ‘Wikipedia’.

Janta Havaldar (transl. The people’s Havildar) is a 1979 Indian Hindi-language film directed by Mehmood, with Rajesh Khanna playing the title role, paired opposite Yogita Bali. The film has Ashok Kumar and Hema Malini making extended guest appearances. This film was not commercially successful at the time of its release. However, over the years, the film has been appreciated by the audiences in its screening on television and has gained a cult following over the years. This movie has songs sung by a newcomer Anwar as Kishore Kumar refused to sing for the movie as it had his ex-wife Yogita Bali in the lead.

This movie has five songs (including one two-part song), all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music for this movie was composed by Rajesh Roshan.

Here is the list of songs this movie has (along with their status on the blog).

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On

02 Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein Anwar Being discussed today
03 Aadhi roti saara kabaab Lata, Anwar, chorus 29.12.2018
04 Sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa …O kimaam Ali khan Usha Mangeshkar, Mehmood, chorus Yet to be posted
05 a) Hamse ka bhool huyi (part 1) Anwar 29.12.2013
05 b) Thokaren hamko qubool raah kisi ko mil jaaye (part 2) Anwar 29.12.2013

Today’s song is sung by Anwar. It is lip synced by Rajesh Khanna. Also seen in the picturization of this song is Yogita Bali. One stanza of this song is repeated as sad version (in background I presume) which is available in the audio link only.

Two well known songs from this movie have been discussed by Peevesie’s Mom ji on the blog and incidentally both were discussed on the birth anniversary of Rajesh Khanna.

Today’s song is also a well known and popular song from this movie. I think this song should be in top songs of Majrooh Sultanpuri (and for composer Rajesh Roshan too). Anwar is the singer of this soulful song. In fact, this should also be in ‘top songs’ list of songs sung by Singer Anwar.

Let us listen to the today’s song now…

Song-Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein (Janta Hawaldaar)(1979) Singer-Anwar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics

Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein
To main sab kuchh luta doongaa
Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein
To main sab kuchh luta doongaa
Mohabbat kaise ki jaati
Mohabbat kaise ki jaati
Hai duniyaa ko dikhaa doongaa
Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein

Tere naazuk haseen kadmon ke
Neeche hamsafar mere
Are o hamsafar mere
Jahaan hogaa koi kaanta
Jahaan hogaa koi kaanta
Wahaan main dil bichha doongaa
Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein

Tammannaa hai ke raushan ho
Teri duniyaa teri mehfil
Tammannaa hai ke raushan ho
Teri duniyaa teri mehfil
Teri duniyaa teri mehfil
Ujaalaa mil sake tujhko
Ujaalaa mil sake tujhko
To main ghar bhi jalaa doongaa
Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein

Bahaaraan cheez kyaa hai phool
Kaliyaan kisko kehte hain
Ke kaliyaan kisko kehte hain
Lahoo meraa salaamat main
Lahoo meraa salaamat main
Teraa jeevan sajaa doonga
Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein
To main sab kuchh luta doongaa
Mohabbat kaise ki jaati
Mohabbat kaise ki jaati
Hai duniyaa ko dikhaa doongaa
Teri aankhon ki chaahat mein

(In audio the following lines of the third stanza are repeated as sad version)

Bahaaraan cheez kyaa hain phool
Kaliyaan kisko kehte hain
Ke kaliyaan kisko kehte hain
Lahoo meraa salaamat main
Lahoo meraa salaamat main
Teraa jeevan sajaa doonga

Hullo Atuldom

“Ham Paanch” was a movie that released towards the end of 1980. It was presented by S K Films Enterprises and was produced by Surinder Kapoor having Boney Kapoor as executive producer. It was directed by Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana known professionally as Bapu. It had a huge star cast headed by Sanjeev Kumar, Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval, Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Mithun Chakravarthy, Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover, Uday Chandra, Aruna Irani, Dulari, Gita Siddharth, Roopesh Kumar, A K Hangal and Kanhaiyalal along with a whole set of known faces that constitute the firmament of Bollywood’s supporting actors.

The movie was a remake of the 1978 Kannada film “Paduvaaralli Pandavaru” which in itself was an adaptation of the Mahabharata. It had music by Laxmi-Pyare and songs were written by Anand Bakshi. Playback singers used were also the gems of Bollywood: – Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Shailendra Singh, Amit Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Anwar and Usha Uthup.

The movie had around 8 songs and made its debut on the blog with this song/ post by Sudhirji in 2016. Its been 5 years since that post and it is high time we have another song, unfortunately I have found links to audios of all the songs. But I have seen these songs and movies eons back and so I can tell that today’s song is being lip synced by Naseer, Mithun, Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover and Uday Chandra (playback was by Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Anwar and Suresh Wadkar). It has these youngsters protesting the tyrannical ways of the local Zamindar (Amrish Puri) who is helped in his mission of ruling the small region in rural India by his munim (Kanhaiyalal in one of his brilliant acts as Munim). The youngsters are guided in their job by Sanjeev Kumar playing Krishna who incidentally happens to be the brother of the Zamindar. I remember that the little sounds that are off-beat in the song (Amit Kumar’s voice) were lip synced by Mithun. How I wish we had the video, my personal recommendation would be to see the movie to enjoy the full essence of the songs and see actors like Gulshan Grover and Raj Babbar in ‘hatke’ (different) avatars.

We are having this song today to wish Raj Babbar on his 69th birthday; my initial reaction when I discovered his age was “Oh! Is he that old!!!” Next was almost all the actors who played ‘paandavs’ in “Ham Paanch” are in the same age bracket and this man, along with Gulshan Grover I suppose, are the youngest. Raj Babbar, who was born in Agra- UP, made his way to movies through NSD. He was first hated for the character that he played in B R Chopra’s ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ in 1980 which released around the same time as ‘Ham Paanch’. Prior to that he had appeared in ‘Kissa Kursi kaa’.

He had around 7 releases in 1980 with ‘Aap Toh Aise Na the’; Insaaf Ka Tarazu’; ‘Sau Din Saas Ke’ and ‘Ham Paanch’ still being in public memory. He has appeared in a few Punjabi movies too. He is an actor who has played all kinds of characters- positive, negative and grey too. Sometime in the ’90s he switched to playing fatherly characters which could be negative too. He was a three-time member of the Lok Sabha and two-time member of the Rajya Sabha. His children Juhi and Arya from his wife Nadira and Prateik from Smita Patil (to whom he was married till her death due to complications in child-birth) are all actors. He has also produced a few movies.

If we had the video of the songs of this movie we would have also been able to the see the fantastic-large eyed-baritone voiced Amrish Puri in what he was excellent in that period. He would have turned 89 on 22nd June had he been around.

Here is wishing Raj Babbar health and happiness and thank you for entertaining us for close to 45 years.
Editor’s note:- With this song, Laxmikant Pyarelal now have 900 songs in the blog as music directors.

Aadmi ki talaash

abhi mara nahin zindaa hai aadmi shaayad
yahin kahin use dhoondho yahin kahin hogaa
badan ki andhi guphaa mein chhupa hua hogaa
badha ke haathh
har ek raushni ko gul kar do
hawaayen tez hain jhande lapet kar rakh do
jo ho sake to unn aankhon pe pattiyan kas do
na koyi paaon ki aahat
na saanson ki awaaz
daraa huaa hai woh
kuchh aur bhi na dar jaaye
badan ki andhhi guphaa se na kuchh kar jaaye
yahin kahin use dhoondho
wo aaj sadiyon baad
udaas udaas hai
khaamosh hai
akelaa hai
na jaane kab koyi pasli phadak utthe us ki
yahin kahin use dhoondho yahin kahin hogaa
barh anaho to use phir libaas pehnaa do
andheri aankhon mein sooraj ki aag dehkaa do
bahut badi hai yeh basti kahin bhi dafnaa do

Duniya jise kehte hainjaadu kaa Khilona hai
Mil jaaye to mitti hai kho jaaye to sona hai

Nida Fazli , full name Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli (12 October 1938 to 8 February 2016) is referring to the mesmerising charm of all things worldly and the fickle mindedness of the self, which keeps hankering after the things not gained, which may or may not be within reach.

The name ‘Nida’ means “to call”. In easy urdu /hindi it would mean “pukaar”. I had considered this name for my daughter. But I was dissuaded from this name, due to the meaning being so ambiguous. Because a call could be happy and good as the “Azaan”, or it could also be a call for attention is bad times or when one is in difficulty or desperation i.e. pukaar.

Here a song from the 1981 film “Aahistaa aahistaa” as part of for ‘dheere dheere songs’ series, written by Nida Fazli. This is a melodious composition by Khayyam. I am including ‘aahistaa aahistaa” in this series as it essentially means the same as ‘dheere dheere”.

Three songs from this movie have been covered in the blog so far :-

Song Date posted
Kabhi kisi ko muqqammal jahaan nahin miltaa 31 july 2010
Maana teri nazar mein 9 July 2012
Jab koi khwaab chamakta hai haqeeqat ban ke 31 july 2020

Padmini Kolhapure and Kunal Kapoor are singing this song on screen. This was a complicated story, I think based on a novel, with Shammi Kapoor and Nanda being the older generation and host of other actors in the cast.

Here is a duet by Asha Bhonsle and Anwar, as a tribute to Poet Nida Fazli on his birth anniversary.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 4

Ten years back on this day the following movies were represented on the blog;

Today I am presenting a beautiful song from the movie ‘Arpan-1983’. The song is sung by Anwar and as I have mentioned in my post on Anwar I like this song very much.

‘Arpan-1983’ was one of the best musical scores of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. I like all songs of this movie and I remember it were very popular then. Though the top three songs in that year’s (1983) annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ were from ‘Souten-1983’ – 01 song and ‘Nikaah-1983’-02 songs respectively at no.1,2 & 3.

However, some of the best music for that year came from Laxmikant-Pyarelal, while Bappi Lahiri and R.D. Burman also gave some of their best musical scores in the same year.

They composed music for as many as twelve movies released in 1983 and the songs from ‘Hero-1983’ released at the end of 1983 ruled the charts in next year i.e. in 1984 and its song ‘tu mera jaanu hai’ ranked at no.1 of the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list of 1984.

‘Arpan -1983’ was directed by J. Om Prakash for his home production ‘Filmyug Pvt. Ltd.’ He was also the producer of this movie.

Jagdish Kumar and Vijay Kumar Soorma were Executive Producers of this movie.
Harish Khatri was the Chief Assistant Director, and Surinder Shorey and Jawahar Bhandari were its Associate Directors.

It had Jeetendra, Reena Roy, Parveen Babi, Raj Babbar. Also featuring in it were Preeti Sapru, Shashi Puri, Sujit Kumar, Sulochana Latkar, Dina Pathak supported by Sudhir Dalvi, Ranveer Raj, Tom Alter, Vikas Anand, Sunder Taneja, Harjeet, Feroz, Vishwanath Shetty, Shafiq Pathan, R.R. Somaiya.

Story of this movie was written by J. Om Prakash.

The screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pant. Editing was done by Nand Kumar and Prakash Dave was his associate.

Lyrics of this movie were written by Anand Bakshi and music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

The movie had total five songs in it for which the voices used were of Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Suresh Wadkar.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.02.1983.

Today’s song is sung by Anwar and lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. Music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal as mentioned above.

Two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog earlier (and even if we consider the second song posted from this movie which was on 28.01.2010, this movie is completing ‘ten years’ run on the blog and still to be ‘Yippeeee’ed 😊

Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog.

While Jeetendra is lip-syncing in Anwar’s voice, Parveen Babi, Reena Roy, Raj Babbar and others are also present in the picturization of this song.

1982-83 was my ‘10th standard – educational year’ so I was not supposed to watch many movies in that year. But I remember after appearing the Board exams and exams of my younger brothers we get to watch many movies thereafter. In between, cricket was going on as usual and there was ‘World Cup 1983 win’ too 😊

But this movie ‘Arpan-1983’ still remains to be watched for me and as such I cannot say much about it, though I loved its songs very much. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs …

Let us now enjoy today’s song …

Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 2
———————————————

We have started Blog ten year challenge one day ago. In this, we will post another song from a movie whose song was covered in the blog on the same day ten years ago.

When I look at the songs that were posted this day ten years ago (viz on 3 february 2009), I find that six songs were covered on that day, and they were from “Barsaat”(1949), “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1948), “Phaagun”(1958), “Umang”(1969), “Do Dishaayen”(1982) and “Laat Sahab”(1967).

Yesterday, I had three movies to chose from for the ten year challenge and chose “Sharaabi”(1984). Today, I find my choices severely limited. As many as five of these movies have already been YIPPEED by now. So that leaves only one movie that is eligible today.

This movie is “Do Dishaayen”(1982). “Do Dishaayen”(1982) was produced by Mrs R Renuka and directed by Dulal Guha for Sudarshan enterprises, Bombay. This “social” movie had Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Prem Chopra, Aruna Irani, Dr Shriram Laagoo, Nirupa Roy, Asit Sen, satyen Kappoo, Sudhir Pandey, Abhi Bhattacharya, Shammi, Dulaari, Manik Dutt, Madhu Malini, Baby Pinky, Asha Sharma, Nandita Thakur, Reeta Kamal etc in it.

The movie had three songs in it. Two songs from the movie have been covered. They were covered on consecutive days, viz 2 february 2009 and 3 february 2009. Here are the details of these songs:-

Song Title

Post No.

Post Date

Koyi kya kare chalte chalte 666 2-Feb-2009
Kisi ko phool mile kisi ko dhool 675 3-Feb-2009

Incidentally, this date that year (viz 3 february 2009) was the 200th day for the blog. Today, ten years down the line is (10 x 365)+200 + 2= 3852. So today the blog is into its 3852th day of existence. Simple arithmetic ! (The figure of 2 is for two additional days for leap year).

So, after a lull of ten years, here is the next song from “Do Dishaayen”(1982) which happens to be the third and final song from the movie.
This song is sung by Anwar and Asha Bhonsle. Lyrics are penned by Anand Bakshi. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The link provided is an audio link. Video link is not available on YT as of now. Providing missing video links on YT is a thankless proposition, so I can just tell the readers that this song is picturised on Dharmendra and Hema Malini.

With this song, all the songs of “Do Dishaayen”(1982) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Hullo to all of Atuldom

I seem to be running short of time daily. And I have missed many dates in the month of DECEMBER for which I would have loved to atleast write out the lyrics and send it to Atulji for appropriate posts. Birthdates of Shatrughan Sinha, Dilip Kumar, Rajnikant, Raj Kapoor, Om Prakash, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan etc. I even had songs of Suresh Oberoi, Mahipal, John Abraham ready in my head. Atulji surprised me by nearly missing Mohd. Rafi’s birthdate, but trust the eternal Rafi Bhakts in our group to send in posts on time and remind Atulji (he always tells that he is bad at remembering dates 🙂 🙂 ).

29th December is another important date for bhakts of Hindi films of the 70s- it is the birthdate of Kaka aka Rajesh Khanna of the charming smile that got him a huge female-fan-following that was crazy enough to write him letters dipped in blood, and I have read in numerous articles and heard hundreds of interviews about how his car would be covered with kisses of his fans. Rajesh Khanna the first real superstar of Bollywood who had 15 consecutive solo hits from 1969 to 1971- an unbroken record. He had 127 films (117 released and 11 unreleased) as protagonist and only 22 multi-star films. He had a fan-following among his fraternity too and Mehmood parodied him in “Bombay To Goa” where the driver and conductor of the bus were called ‘Rajesh’ and ‘Khanna’.

We all know that Rajesh Khanna’s career had a great take off with the double role that he played in Shakti Samantha’s ‘Aradhana’ singing “ho oooo,he aeae, ha aaaa” on an open jeep travelling alongside the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s toy train to a bashful Sharmila Tagore pretending to be disturbed in her reading of the Alister Maclean’s “Where Eagles Dare”. But his pairings with Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Hema Malini, Rekha, Rakhee, Zeenat and others of the 70s were no less eye-pleasing. His most popular songs may have been sung by Kishore Kumar but can anyone forget “Ye jo chilman hai dushman hai humari”; “bina badra ke bijuriya kaise chamke”; “humse ka bhool hui jo yeh sazaa humka mili”; “arre jana hai toh jao boolayenge nahin” or the forever classic “zindagi kaisi hai paheli hai re”. A lot of the singers of the 70s and 80s have had opportunity to give playback for Kaka but we cannot escape the Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna songs.

For today’s post I have chosen a Rajesh Khanna – Hema Malini song- this was a favourite pair of mine post “zindagi ek safar hai suhana” and Kudrat, Mehbooba, Rajput etc only made me love this pair even more. They have appeared in 10-15 movies together.

The song I chose is from the 1979 released Mehmood directed “Janta Hawaldaar”. Hema Malini had an extended guest appearance in the movie. I have also managed to steer clear of ‘Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna’ addiction as also the Anand Bakshi- R D Burman strangle. The song is sung by Anwar in a very Rafi-like manner with Majrooh as the lyricist ad Rajesh Roshan as composer. And the added bonus in the song is Rajesh Khanna has danced differently.

This may be my last post for the year. So I thought I should take this opportunity to wish all of Atuldom a very Happy 2019. And close the year thinking of Kaka or Jatin Khanna (his birthname)- our very own Rajesh Khanna.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# The Special Voices of the decade – 2 # Anwar #
———————————————–———————-

Welcome all to this second article under this ‘series’.

In this ‘series’ we are discussing the ‘Special Voices’ which emerged on the horizon of HFM in the years of Seventies, and who in their own way have left an indelible mark in the minds of ‘music lovers’ leaving behind legacy of many many memorable songs.

These ‘Special Voices’ are those singers who make their entry in Hindi Film Music when the legends like Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor among Male Singers and Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, among female singers were already ruling the Hindi Film Music scene. Still, these new voices, when they entered into HFM, took the audience by storm. Some of them were successful enough and popular too, and they continue to sustain for a long time.

However, some, though they shine very brightly as they appear on the scene, but were not able to sustain for a long time and slowly fade away from the scene and may be from the memory of many people too. In any case all of them gave us many fabulous songs and memories to cherish forever. Some of these Singers continued to enjoy being favorites among music directors and audience and/ or both and were successful in keeping themselves going and singing.

But some were not lucky enough and were sidelined with or without any reason. Politics, ego, discrimination and hypocrisy play their roles around us in every sphere of life, and Cinema too has always been influenced by these factors. Many talented people have been affected by this. And so, if one compares the number of songs their final tally read one will conclude that they were not successful or popular as the other established singers of their time who were ruling the charts at that time.

But, numbers are not the true test and so in these cases they will not justify the immense talent these people possess.

One of such talented Singer is the name – Anwar Hussain or Anwar as he is better known by. The voice that was said to be the ‘closest’ to, and having a ‘strange resemblance’ with the voice of Rafi Saab.

Anwar was born on 1st February, 1949 in Mumbai. His father Aashiq Hussain was an accomplished harmonium player and assistant to the famous Music Director Ghulam Haider. His father also used to play sitar. This familiar film and music background inspired young Anwar to take on music and singing. Looking at his interest in singing, his father took him to Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan for training in classical music. Here Anwar took a rigorous training for more than ten years.

Simultaneously he was also doing stage shows where he used to sing songs of Rafi Saab. He was noticed by the famous S. Hazara Singh who took him to Poona to sing with his musical group. While Anwar was going around doing the stage shows and singing in marriage functions, he always wanted to do playback singing for movies. His friends were also encouraging him always and telling him that his voice was very much similar to that of Rafi Saab’s voice.

Music director Kamal Rajasthani who was also struggling then to establish himself as a music-director in Hindi film world, spotted Anwar during one of his stage shows and he gave him a break as a playback singer in the movie ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’ (1973). Kamal Rajasthani also gave him further training to polish his talent.

Anwar made his debut in Hindi films with this song ‘Kasmein Hum Apni Jaan Ki Khaaye Chale Gaye’. Though initially he rehearsed for a different song but was finally given this solo and to sing. It so happened that Rafi Saab was present in the same studio where mixing of this song was being done and when Rafi Saab listened to this song, he asked his secretary when did he recorded this one. One can easily assume that the praise and showering coming straight from the ‘living legend’ then would have been more than enough for someone to establish himself in the industry and make a great career.

However, unfortunately, ‘stars’ were not in favor of Anwar and his career didn’t take off after his debut as he expected it to be. When he recorded his first song he was just twenty years old. So, it was still a long way to go for him. But in spite of the ‘perfect start’ with ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’, he had to wait for almost four years to get his next chance to sing in Hindi films.

And that too came up after lot of struggle and making visits to several music directors. As told by Anwar himself he used to visit many music directors and play his first recorded song to get work. Many of them appreciated him, but also told him that since Rafi Saab was already there so they didn’t see any reason to have him song for them. In a very recent interview of 2016 Anwar has given vent to his feelings, and his mistakes too, which he admits were mainly responsible to ruin his career in HFM.

Well, coming back to his looking for work, he met many of the leading and famous music directors of that time but nothing materialized. Finally, when he contacted Mehmood who was then busy in the making of ‘Kunwaara Baap’ (1974). He got some respite, as Mehmood assured him to give songs in his next movie ‘Janta Hawaldar’ (1979). Mehmood took him to music director Rajesh Roshan. The latter took him on as a playback singer, without asking him any questions, as he was aware of Mehmood’s ‘music sense’.

And after that as we are all aware the songs of ‘Janta Hawaldar’ were liked immensely by the public specifically “Hamse Ka Bhool Huyi“and “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein”.

The song that was first recorded for this movie was “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein”. After recording, Mehmood took to play it for Rajesh Khanna who was shooting at ‘Filmalaya Studios’ for another movie. When he listened to this song his reaction was – “Bade dinon ke baad Rafi saab ne bade mood mein gaana gaya hai”.

After this movie he started getting offers and some of his notable songs came in movies like ‘Qurbaani’ (1980), ‘Aahista Aahista’ (1981), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Prem Rog’ (1982), ‘Vidhaata’ (1982), ‘Arpan’ (1983), ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ (1984), ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab’ (1984), ‘Ye Ishq Nahin Aasan’ (1984), ‘Heer Raanjha’ (1992), etc.

His career lasted for almost twenty years from 1973 to 1993. And as mentioned by him in the interview on RS TV he sang about 1000 to 1500 songs for the movies (I am not aware if this is only for Hindi Movies or it includes other language movies too. Knowledgeable readers are requested to throw more light on this.)

In this same interview the anchor noted and I also vaguely remembered that people initially thought that Anwar was the son of Rafi Saab. It should be noted here that from 1973 to 1980 when Rafi Saab was still alive, he got very less opportunities of singing in movies. Though he got the opportunity to sing with Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Suresh Wadkar, Asha Bhonsle, Sudha Malhotra and others he didn’t get that much if we compare it with other singers and that too specially Rafi Saab himself had said about him that he is the best one who could fill the gap after him.

But nothing magical happened and thus a talented singer’s career come to a sad end.

Other than the songs that I mentioned above I like his “Koyee Pardesi Aaya Pardes Mein  and “Haathon Ki Chand Lakeeron Ka”. I would also like to mention the song “Yaar Dagaa De Gaya Dulhan Ko Le Gaya” which is having his voice along with Manna Dey and Jaspal Singh. Another famous song by him is “Mohabbat Ab Tijaarat Ban Gayi Hai”, which he sang for Jeetendra in 1983 for the film ‘Arpan’ which is his other song I like very much and it was quite popular too in those years.

There are many of his songs which I like or which had been popular, however I have mentioned above only those songs which give me ‘nostalgic’ feeling most. So far (if the data is updated and correct) we have only eleven of his songs posted on the blog; and not a single one of his from the melodious musical ‘Ahista Ahista’ has been posted so far on the blog. But, well, that gives us an opportunity to discuss them in future.

Today’s song is closer to my heart and very nostalgic for me. For today’s post initially, I strongly felt to share the song “Nazar Se Phool Chunti Hai Nazar” from ‘Aahista Aahista’, but I skipped it for future. The second option was the beautiful song from ‘Janta Hawaldar’ – “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein” (this was available and shared by me long back in 2012, but still to be posted). However, for today, I have selected this song from ‘Be-Shaque’ (1980). Because this way I can also introduce this movie on the blog.

This was a song in my vague memory and I was sure that it was sung by Mohd Rafi. It was in my wish list of the songs that I wish to see on our blog. Before I could search and prepare for it one fine day I noticed that it has been posted for the film ‘Laal Bangla’ (1966). But when I checked again, I found that it does not have the same lines that were in my memory for so long. Confused, I keep on searching and finally succeeded in getting the song which I think I have heard many many years back. Now I got to know that this is sung by Anwar and not by Mohd Rafi. But interestingly, the music for the films ‘Laal-Bangla’ and the movie for today’s song, is composed by the same music director Usha Khanna. The lyrics of this song are penned by Nandi Khanna.

I have not watched this movie and would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this film and the songs from this film. Also, I would like to note here that when I shared this song long back I had only the video of this song which has only one stanza. At that time I thought the song was only this one stanza. Now after almost five years I have been able to find the full version of this song (but audio only) which is being presented with this post today.

The film ‘Be-Shaque’ was directed by Kashinath for Surya Gayatri Productions, Bombay. It had Yogita Bali, Mithun Chakravarty, Sonia Sahni, Jalal Agha, Amrish Puri, Asha Chandra, Suresh Chatwal, Mohan Choti, Pental, Raj Bibra and Shakti Kapoor. This movie has four songs (as per HFGK Vol-V) – two penned by Anjaan, and one each by Ravindra Rawal and Nandi Khanna. Music is by Usha Khanna. Anwar, Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar and Usha Khanna gave their voices to the songs in this movie. On screen this song is lip synced by Mithun Chakravarty.
