Donon ke dil hain majboor ‘finance’ se … film hi release naa ho to ham kya karein. 😊

Today’s song is a lovely duet song penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. But the irony of this song is that it never came on the screen despite being recorded (and shot*) for not one but two different movies. However, in its second edition the male singer was different and credit for music direction was also given to only one of the composers and not to the ‘duo’ of composers as was the case in the older movie.

This song was composed by music duo Basu-Manohari, who were associated with music director R.D. Burman. In the first instance this song was recorded for the movie titled as ‘Bin Baap Kaa Betaa’ from the decade of ‘1970s’. This movie either remain an incomplete movie or if completed, it was never released.

‘Bin Baap Kaa Betaa’ was directed by well-known director Mukul Dutt for ‘Sarang Films’. Mukul Dutt had directed movies like ‘Aan Milo Sajanaa-1970’, ‘Raaste Kaa Patthar-1972’, ‘Aaj Ki Raadhaa-1973’, ‘Chhaliyaa-1973’ etc. Some sources mention the year for this movie as ‘1977’. The cast of this movie included Amol Palekar, Simple Kapadia, Mehmood and others. As per information provided in Geet Kosh Vol-V (1971-1980) this movie has four songs sung by Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and Yesudas. Geet Kosh has left space for the possibility of more songs which might have been recorded for this movie. Today we are going to listen to a song sung by Yesudas and Lata Mangeshkar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist.

Now we come to the other movie which was completed in the year of 1992-1993. However, it landed in financial troubles. This movie was “Nargis-1993”. This movie has already made its debut on this blog with a song presented by me earlier on the blog.

“Nargis-1993” was produced and directed by Khalid Mohammed. The director of this movie Khalid Mohammed is not to be confused with the famous journalist, screenplay writer and director Khalid Mohammed. According to a video clip available on a video sharing platform , director Khalid Mohammed of ‘Nargis-1993’ is described as the brother of actress Farida Jalal. It also claims that his other name is Khalid Sami who was director of movies like ‘Kanhaiyya-1980’. Khalid Mohammed the director of ‘Nargis-1993’ was also the secretary of actress Zeba Bakhtiyar who acted in the same movie. (It seems that his name is Khalid Mohammed Sami as it appears at the end of the official trailer of this movie. This trailer is uploaded on YouTube on 8th June’2024).

“Nargis-1993” was presented by Kamal Mukut under the banner of ‘Filmtech, Bombay’. Khalid Mohammad who directed this movie was also the writer and producer of this movie. The cast of this movie included Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Zeba Bakhtiyar, Manzoor Ali, Dinesh Hingoo, Neelam, Arun Bakshi, Anant Mahadevan, Sulbha Deshpande, Sudhir Dalvi, Nandita Thakur, Rabia, Kamal Deep, Chandani, Amjad Khan and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 26.04.1993. According to the information available online this movie has seven songs (including one two-part song). The lyrics of all the songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music for this movie is composed by Basu Chakravarty (of Basu-Manohari). The singers’ names for this movie have Lata Mangeshkar, Jagjit Singh, Asha Bhonsle, Naseeruddin Shah and Shweta(I) in the list of songs of this movie.

Today we are going to listen to the song which is sung by Jagjit Singh and Lata Mangeshkar. The lyrics for this song are the same as the older song sung by Yesudas and Lata Mangeshkar for the movie ‘Bin Baap Ka Betaa-1977. Both versions of this song are lovely compositions to listen to. The Lata-Jagjit version is a bit longer.

During the preparation of this write-up and listening of the song I came across a video of ‘launching of the movie Nargis-1993’. This video is available on a video sharing platform on the internet (uploaded by Lehren). In this video of the ‘launching of this movie’, we can see the legendary actor Dilip Kumar (also giving clap for the first shot of this movie), Randhir Kapoor, Raza Murad, Mehmood, Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Zeba Bakhtiyar, Manzoor Ali (Mehmood’s younger son), Saira Banu, Amjad Khan, Farida Jalal, lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri, and many others. It is obvious that the director of this movie must be present at the gathering there, but I do not identify him by his face.

The text with the trailer of this movie (uploaded on 8th June’2024) says that this movie to be about ‘a tale of love, resilience, and unbreakable spirit of a woman’. The trailer of this movie also gives us a glimpse of the today’s song in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Jagjit Singh which on screen is lip synced by Zeba Bakhtiyar and Manzoor Ali. In the video (by Lehren) of the ‘mahurat’ of this movie the actress Zeba Bakhtiyar also briefly mentions about this movie as ‘a story of a girl from village, who comes to the city and gets into trouble where she has to go through torture & trauma’. (I am not aware if the releasing of the trailer of this movie few months ago is part of an attempt to bring this movie in circulation on internet).

Let us enjoy listening to the two versions of this song … Singers are Lata Mangeshkar, Yesudas and Jagjit Singh. Lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and music is composed by Basu Chakravarty and Manohari. As mentioned above this song was picturised on Zeba Bakhtiyar and Manzoor Ali (son of actor Mehmood). Had the movie been released it would have been the debut movie of Manzoor Ali as actor. However, he had to wait longer to appear on screen till the movie ‘Dushman Duniya Kaa’ which was released in 1996. This movie was directed by his father actor Mehmood, and this was the last movie that Mehmood had directed.

With this song the movie ‘Bin Baap Kaa Betaa-1977’ makes its debut on the blog today.
