Hullo Atuldom
“Chor police” (1983) was the directorial debut of Amjad Khan and produced by his wife Shehla Khan and Vinay Kumar Sinha (who was Amjad Khan’s secretary too). It was presented by Cinema International. It had R D Burman’s music and songs were written by Nida Fazli & Vithalbhai Patel (as per the movie’s titles). Suresh Wadkar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Vinod Sehgal and Vanita Mishra were the playback singers used.
Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Shatrughan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Master Vishal (also known as Master Bittu), Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Kalpana Iyer, Satyen Kappu, Sudhir, Madhu Malhotra, Imtiaz Khan & Amjad Khan were in the cast. Vinod Mehra & Bindiya Goswami were in special appearances. The film also had three actors from the U.A.E. Narendranath, Zarina Wahab, Nazneen were in friendly appearances.
Vinod Mehra & Shatrughan Sinha are cops & friends. Master Vishal played the child whose parents Vinod Mehra & Bindiya Goswami and grandfather (Ashok Kumar) are killed. The child goes into trauma and becomes mute. All this happens on the night of the child’s birthday. He is adamant that he will cut the cake only after his uncle (Shatru) also joins the party.
The viewing public knows what to expect at the end of the song as there is a build up to it. We are shown that Vinod Mehra, who is investigating the rape & murder of Nazneen, has just shot Kadar Khan’s son in an encounter (encounter killings were not yet a frequently used term then). He has assigned the job of exacting revenge to Shakti Kapoor, Gurbachan Singh & Narendranath. The trio have planted a bomb in the cake which is supposed to blast when the cake is cut. But because of the kid’s Zidd the cake remains uncut. Post the party Shakti Kapoor & Gurbachan enter the house & assault Bindiya & Vinod Mehra and also set off the bomb which kills Ashok Kumar. The child has witnessed this from his hiding place.

Today on the occasion of Ashok Kumar’s anniversary we are having the next where we have the ladies of the family -Nirupa Roy & Bindiya in Red sarees & Parveen Babi in a grey saree. The ladies look beautiful with gorgeous hairs in similar style of Bindiya & Parveen needing special mention. The song has Manna Dey giving playback for Ashok Kumar who is on the piano, & I think midway into the song Dada Moni himself has mouthed a few words. Suresh Wadkar is the other male singer & Asha Bhonsle gives playback for the ladies even for Nirupa Roy. Vanitha Mishra is the voice for the little boy.
Remembering the lovable Ashok Kumar with this song. Today it is 23 years since Dada Moni passed away at the age of 90.
