Mukesh and his Actors – 05
——————————————–

In my previous post, I had let the cat out of the bag by revealing the next actor’s name in this series.

Well, Mukesh has sung some 19-20 odd songs for Shashi Kapoor. The number is seemingly quite less, but that’s the story of Mukesh for most of his contemporary actors for whom he gave playback.

I shall skip any introduction of Shashi Kapoor as his life and career is well documented and available.

Mukesh maintains his unique hit ratio with Shashi Kapoor too. A detailed table with the magical collaboration of Shashi Kapoor and Mukesh is reproduced below.

Gems with all categories of genres can be found in the table. Almost all the songs are relatively known with quite a few major hits. In fact, no description is required for most of the songs. However, I shall quickly run through the collaboration.

Shashi Kapoor started his acting career as a child actor in ‘Aag’ (1948) and ‘Awara’ (1951). After about half a dozen movies in which he played child’s role, he made his debut with ‘Dharmputra’ (1961) in a lead role as an adult. While BR Chopra’s ‘Dharmputra’ (1961) had no songs of Mukesh, there was one more movie of Shashi Kapoor in 1961 wherein Mukesh had two songs. The movie was ‘Char Diwari’ under the musical composition of Salil Chowdhury. But neither of these songs were featured on Shashi Kapoor.

However, a special mention is to be made of one of the songs which apparently was a background song picturized on newly married Shashi Kapoor and Nanda. On listening to the composition, wordings of the song and especially the rendering of Mukesh, one wonders if this song – “Kaise Manaaun Piyava“, belongs to some other planet. Any given day, this will be one of my 3 best songs of Mukesh. The poignancy in Mukesh’s voice in this song cannot be expressed in words.

The very next year, Mukesh sang one song each in the two films that Shashi Kapoor acted. They are S. No 1 and 2 in the above table.

3 and 4 are from the same film, ‘Holiday In Bombay’ (1963) under the composition of N Datta who used Mukesh very sparingly. From 1960-63, Mukesh sang just 6 songs in 4 films for N. Datta. All the 6 songs have been covered on the blog.

5 is a melodious duet with Asha Bhosle.

6 is perhaps the first song that comes to the mind of many people when the duo is discussed. The film did have some good songs but this solo by Mukesh with Shashi Kapoor singing on a piano has a different fan base. In the song, Sanjay Khan is clueless and Rajshree (and her eyes 😊) knows why Shashi Kapoor is pouring his heart out. A common inclusion in most of the cassette and CD compilations of the best of Mukesh.

7 and 8 are also good songs under the composition of Kalyanji Anandji.

9 and 10 require special mention because of the close association of Mukesh and Daan Singh who will remain as one of the unluckiest composers in HFM. Despite immense talent, bad luck was a constant associate with most of the films for which he was signed. I recollect a couple of posts which have a detailed story of his career. I shall try to insert the links in the comments section or include them in my next post at a later date.
In fact, when Daan Singh passed away in June 2011, one of the articles on TOI made a special mention of song number 9.

10 is a popular number. However, I feel it is one of the most underrated romantic songs of Mukesh. It’s amazing how effortlessly Mukesh sings two songs with such contrasting feelings in the same film.

11 belongs to a film called ‘Chori Chori’ under the composition of Shanker Jaikishen. But there is a twist in the title, so to say. Apparently, there are two films released in 1956 and 1973 under the composition of Shanker Jaikishen with the same title. I have already covered and clarified this confusion in this post of mine for the song “Tere Jaisi Chhori Hoti Gaanv Maa Hamaar“.

12 is being taken up in this post and I will cover it at the end.

13 was covered in my previous post where I discussed Mukesh’s association with singer Kanchan.

14 and 15 are from the film ‘Farishta Ya Qatil’ (1977). Whist one duet has been covered; one patriotic song sung by Mukesh remains to be taken up. Let me take a pause here and write as to why this post got delayed.

Even though audio of most of the songs from this film are available, their videos are difficult to trace. I was simply unable to get the video of song no 15. It was essential for me to complete the table with accurate information and hence the wait. It is surprising that a film released 1977 should have such issues. One link on YouTube has the entire film, but I suppose all the songs have been removed.
It was at this juncture that I sought the help from our ever-reliable Sudhir ji. As usual, he took efforts to search the movie in his collection and did trace it out. He confirmed that song no 15 is indeed picturized on Shashi Kapoor and wanted to know if he should upload it. Since, the audio is available, it is evident that it is a patriotic song. As such, I replied that I was in the lookout for only the proof that it was Shashi Kapoor himself on the screen and that the song could be taken up on 26 Jan or 15 August.

16 is a hummable triad with Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosale. The laborers standing on the scaffolding and joining the chorus is indeed quite risky from their own safety point of view. The background of the under-construction building, and plot of the movie may suit the shooting of the song, but with so many laborers perched high above the ground is scary.

17 and 18 like 9 and 10 are very popular songs. 17 remains one of the most popular lullaby songs sung by Mukesh. 18 has been aptly summed up by Atul ji in 3 short sentences in the post for “Suhaani Chaandni Raaten Hamen Soney Nahin Deti“. 😊

19! Well, do I need to write anything about it. It is well known as the last song sung by Mukesh for HFM before he left for America along his son and Lata Mangeshkar for a concert and never returned. That it remains uncovered so far was very surprising for me. I request the editors to reserve this song for me as it can be posted as one of the last songs of Mukesh to be covered on the blog.

Coming to the curious case of the last song in the table, which incidentally has been covered by self for a different context altogether. The film is ‘Subhash Chandra’ (1978), which was the Hindi dubbed version of a Bengali film released in 1966 with the same title. Though songs of the Hindi film are available on the net, the details are sketchy as far as other details such as complete cast etc. are concerned. The compiler of Mukesh Geet Kosh, the late Harish Raghuwanshi ji, in the second edition of this book, has attributed this particular song of Mukesh to Shashi Kapoor not only on the main page but also in the index under the actor’s name. Thus, he was sure that it was featured on Shashi Kapoor. Coming from him so strongly, there has to be some solid reason, but again as the video is not available, I have intentionally kept the row contents in italic in the table. Shashi Kapoor acted in plenty of films in mid-seventies and early eighties. So, was it a film, where he had cameo role for this particular song and was not credited? I have no clue. If any knowledge reader has any insight to add on this song, please add your views in the comment section.

[Editor’s Note: A different Hindi film by the name ‘Netaji Subhashchandra Bose’ was also released in 1966, under the banner of Adarshlok.]

Thus, a total of 19-20 odd songs of Mukesh for Shashi Kapoor. Coming to the song for this post, I take up song no. 12.

The wiki page of the film ‘Insaaniyat‘ has all the details. There are three songs in the film and one has been covered on the blog.
The song under discussion is a chhed-chhaad song, belittling both the actor and the singer. A sort of forgetful song compared to the other gems in the table. But, it has helped me to cover one of the most famous actors to grace the silver screen and the songs that Mukesh sang for him.

Let us try to enjoy this song with contributions by hugely popular artists. 😊

Mahesh Ji

Thanks for the post on Mukesh-Shashi Kapoor pairing.

I entirely agree that ‘Kaise manaoon..’ is a top level song by Mukesh. One my my much recalled songs
