Lalla lalla lori doodh ki katori

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Mukti (1977) stars Shashi Kapoor, Vidya Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar and Bindiya Goswami. Shashi Kapoor plays Vidya Sinha’s husband. This happy couple has a daughter, who would grow up to be Bindiya Goswami. In the happier times of this small family, the father sings a lullaby to his daughter. As usual in films, these happy times don’t last forever and the father goes missing and then it is the mother’s turn to sing the lullaby with a similar mukhdaa but different antaras. Both versions are included here.
This would turn out to be the most famous lullaby of the 70s. I should admit it is not my favourite, maybe because of the over-exposure to it. But while writing down the lyrics I caught myself developing a sort of endearment towards it. The preference is clearly towards the Lata version.
Shashi Kapoor, who plays here Bindiya Goswami’s father would romance her in Shaan three years later.

lallaa lallaa lori
doodh ki katori
doodh mein bataashaa
munni kare tamaashaa
o lallaa lallaa lori
doodh ki katori
doodh mein bataashaa
munni kare tamaashaa
chhoti-chhoti pyaari pyaari
sundar pariyon jaisi hai
chhoti-chhoti pyaari pyaari
sundar pariyon jaisi hai
kisi ki nazar naa lage
meri munni aisi hai
shahad se bhi meetthii
doodh se bhi gori
chupke chupke
chori chori
chori
lallaa lallaa lori
doodh ki katori
doodh me bataashaa
munni kare tamaashaa
kaari rainaa ke maathe pe
chamke chaand si bindiyaa
kaari rainaa ke maathe pe
chamke chaand si bindiyaa
munni ke chhote chhote
nainon mein khele nindiyaa
sapnon kaa palnaa
aashaaon ki dori
chupke chupke
chori chori
chori
lallaa lallaa lori
doodh ki katori
doodh mein bataashaa
munni kare tamaashaa
o lallaa lallaa lori
doodh ki katori
hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm

aadhi murjhaa jaati hain
thodi si kaliyaan khilti hain
aadhi murjhaa jaati hain
thodi si kaliyaan khilti hain
saari ki saari khushiyaan
jeevan mein kisko milti hain

Thanks to his appearance in multi-starrers, Shashi’s career got a new lease of life.
Yes, This lori was all over the radio in those days.

This way he was able to work despite the presence of Amitabh.
