Today’s song is from the movie which is mostly known for its’ song ‘ik ritu aaye ik ritu jaaye’ and also for being directed by Subhash Ghai. I had never watched this movie till recently. I watched movies like ‘Kaalicharan’ and ‘Vishwanath’ too on TV many years after their release.

‘Gautam Govinda-1979’ was the third movie that Subhash Ghai had directed after ‘Kaalicharan’ and ‘Vishwanath’.

“Gautam Govinda-1979” was produced by Shyam Sunder Shivdasani for ‘Murghan Enterprises, Bombay’. It was written and directed by Subhash Ghai. The cast of this movie has Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Aruna Irani, Vijay Arora, Nirupa Roy, Premnath, Madan Puri, Krishan Dhawan, Om Shivpuri, Mukri, Abhi Bhattacharya, S.N. Tripathi, Kailashnath, Sudhir, Viju Khote, Birbal, Tiger Kapoor, Master Raju, Master Aslam, Tarana, Manmouji, Tilakraj, Ashok Khanna, Shashi Kiran and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 20.02.1979.

Story of “Gautam Govinda” was written by Mukta Ghai, and its dialogues were written by M.G. Hashmat. Editing of this film was done by Kamlakar. The soundtrack of this movie has five soundtracks which has four songs and one dialogue soundtrack. (The movie has some good dialogues with its intense dramatic story.)

Lyrics for the four songs are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Singers are Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Rafi. I associated the song ‘ik ritu aaye ik ritu jaaye’ with this movie name. This song had become a classic song. And very aptly this is the only song from this movie that has been posted on the blog.

After watching the movie now, I find two more songs that I am familiar with. Today’s song is one of them and I am surprised that this has not been posted on the blog yet.

While watching this movie I feel that it has shades of ‘Khotey Sikke’, ‘Sholay’, and ‘Deewaar’ in it. Also, the movie has a parallel plot of the time tested ‘lost & found’ formula too. We have Gautam (Shashi Kapoor) an Inspector who is known for his strictness, discipline and dealing tough with the criminals. But he is a good-hearted Police Officer too who helps ‘criminals’ who are poor people forced into the world of crime by circumstances and or by the money power of the big ‘mafias’ or ‘smugglers’ etc. And when he gets hold of one such poor criminal and gets to know that the real ‘big fish’ is Bagga Seth/Raja Bhagendra Singh (Madan Puri) he goes and rams his bike straight into the bedroom of Bagga Seth and arrests him from there. His senior i.e. Commissioner of Police (Om Shivpuri) guides him further that the real duty of Police is to study the mind of the criminals and why they are into the crime instead of giving punishment to them. Now he gives Gautam a bigger challenge as a new assignment, where he will be posted in village where there is no rule of law, no schools, no police stations and such institutions, where people have their own rules and they only know ‘fighting each other’ …

pyaar na seekha, nafrat karnaa seekh liyaa
sab logon ne ladnaa marnaa seekh liyaa

in ko jeena kaun sikhaaye (of course this is included in our Inspectors job-profile 😊)

The movie goes well till Inspector lands to this ‘dreaded’ village where the village postman Gopala (Vijay Arora) welcomes him and takes him to the village on his bicycle. So, Gopala becomes friend of Gautam, but always reminding him of the ‘risk’ involved in his ‘good job’ and suggesting him to leave the place for his own betterment. But our Inspector is made of ‘tough steel’ so he continues there till the movie ends 😊

He keeps on trying and bringing good things to the villagers making them ‘civilians’ and ‘enlightening’ them with good deeds and thoughts. When we have movie story based in a village naturally comes the ‘village belle’. So, we have Sandhya (Moushumi Chatterjee). Other than appreciating the Inspector’s work and supporting him she also develops a liking for him and fall in love with him. But our Inspector is unable to read her ‘hidden messages’ she wants to convey every time. Thus, she finds a solution to this problem and decides to file a ‘report’ for ‘her personal theft’. Normally one must go through lot of hardships in filing a complaint with the police, and leave alone the Inspector, the common man feels even great if he is able to get to the peon of the Inspector in a police station. But our ‘village belle’ is ‘smart’ and she was that smart in the decade of ‘seventies’ that she gets the Inspector to ‘puraanee havelee’ (her home?) through her ‘sahelis’ at the pretext that there has been a theft there.

The Inspector is almost ‘women handled’ and push inside the ‘havelee’ and the door is locked from outside. Inside behind the veil stands the lady ready to ‘sing’ her complaint so that the ‘darogaajee’ can write the report. 😊 As the lady ‘recites’ her sweet complaint the Inspector has no option except to sit and listen to her, and finally surrendering to her in the backdrop of some beautiful outdoor locations in this song …

Other than Moushumi Chatterjee and Shashi Kapoor we have many female artistes present in the picturisation this song.

Enjoy this lovely song on this special ‘6000’th day of the blog!!!
