#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 151 # Qawwalis – 14 #
———————————————————————

Qawwalis were common in Hindi films when I was growing up(1968-1983). As I grww watching them in the movies in my childhood, some qawwalis left lasting impression on my impressionable mind.

Qawwalis like ‘raaz ki baat kehdoon to’, ‘jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabi’, ‘shirdiwaale sai baba’, ‘raat abhi baaki hai baat abhi baaki hai’, ‘mehangaayi maar gayi’, were the most heard qawwalis when I was growing.

‘Chadhhta sooraj dheere dheere dhalta hai dhal jaayega’ was a favourite of all ‘orchestras’ and one person from a Orchestra from Jalgaon used to sing it so well that always left the audience ‘spell-bound’. I remember this qawwali ever since.

All these qawwalisgrew up on me as I grew up in my life.

I have a special fascination for this genre of music. It always takes me to an entirely different ‘musical world’.

In the movies of ‘seventies’ qawwalis were a major attraction in the movies. Qawwalis like ‘ham to jhuk kar salaam karte hain’, ‘ham lootne aayen hain’, etc. were liked very much by the audience. There may be many more which I could have missed to mention here.

Jaani Babu Qawwal, Shakila Bano Bhopali and Aziz Nazan were the names I particularly remember whenever there was a discussion on qawwalis.
And as I had mentioned in my posts earlier that another name which I vaguely remembered was Shankar-Shambhu. At that age I could not understand the greatness of these peoples, and it is only after coming into the contact of this blog, that I got to read, learn, and know about these stalwarts in Qawwalis.

There was a phase when disco made an entry into HFM in mid-eighties to let us say till mid-nineties when Qawwalis took a little backseat (I think), otherwise they were always likened and had always been an integral part of HFM. In the recent years we have seen many Qawwalis in Hindi Films. The new digital age, technological advances in music instruments have enriched the presentation of Qawwalis. Movie makers have been experimenting by including ‘qawwali song’ or ‘fusion qawwali songs’ in their movies.

In Hindi movies qawwalis are woven with the story topic of the movie. So, we have ‘’romantic qawwalis’, ‘men vs women’, ‘husn aur ishq’, ‘celebrating a festival’, ‘devotional qawwalis’, ‘chor-police’, ‘marriage celebration’, ‘mujrim-munsif’, ‘scoring peanuts over each other’ (Atulogy), ‘nok-jhonk’, ‘teasing each other’, ‘musical competition’, and other types of qawwalis in our movies.

Or it may be a competition of poetry between two groups (read men and women mostly) where ‘qawwalis’ would perfectly fit into the plot of a movie.

In many movies they have been used to keep the suspense intact where actors, actresses would disguise themselves and enter the villain’s den to rescue their partners/friends caught by the villain. Or sometimes the villain will kidnap close relatives of the hero or heroine in the movie and ask for a ‘hefty’ ransom. And the hero/heroine would plan a song or disguise as a ‘musical-troupe’ to enter the ‘villain’s den’ to rescue a ‘child’, ‘relatives’ or a ‘famous scientist’ or a ‘police commissioner’ who would have been kidnaped by the villain or his associates.

To mis-lead the villain the hero/heroine or their friends and well-wishers would sing a qawwali and simultaneously free the innocent ones caught by the villain. Sometimes this would happen just before the climax of the movie.

In our movies we also have qawwalis where we see ‘lawful elements(police, CID) and the unlawful elements(goondas, or burglar, thieves)’ have a ‘qawwali muqaabla’ in “disguise”.

I am not a competent person to write or discuss about the technicalities of Qawwalis. But since I like them very much, I had undertaken this series and have presented some qawwalis from the ‘decade of seventies or 1971-to-1980’.

If we look on the statistics of the qawwalis already posted on the blog till today’s song, we get the following details (which could be of interest to music connoisseurs).

(The above details are so far compiled for the 173 qawwalis already posted on the blog. There might be some songs which might be missing in absence of the tag ‘Qawwalis’ on their post.

For now, we are concluding this series with the today’s qawwali from the ‘1980’ movie ‘Be-reham’.

This is another movie of which the dedication is to ‘All policemen known and unknown who lived for discipline and died for discipline’. That would also be sufficient for all to guess what the movie is all about.

“Be-reham-1980” was directed by R. Jhalani for ‘K.D.S. Films’.

It was produced by K.D. Shorey who also wrote the story of this movie.

Its star cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Mala Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, I.S. Johar, Kadar Khan, Urmila Bhatt, Keshto Mukherjee, Manmohan, Shetty, Raj Mehra, Rinku Jaiswal, Komila Virk, Viju Khote, Ashok Nag, Gurubachan, C.S. Dubey, Sheel Kumar, Amarjeet, R.S. Chopra, Madhup Sharma, Sudarshan Sethi, Sehgal, Uma Khosla, Vimal Chopra, and Helen in special appearance.

Moushumi Chatterjee, Kamal, Sujata and Dev Kumar make a friendly appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 01.08.1980.

Lyrics of the songs of this movie were written by Verma Malik and Jigar Muradabadi.
Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Here is the list of songs this movie had.

06 Ham aaj ye kissaa khatm karen Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor Verma Malik

Today’s qawwali happens when the movie is already having some interesting ‘twists and turn’ in its story. I am not going to detail it more to keep intact the interest of those who would like to or have to watch this interesting movie.

I remember when the movie was released one of my classmates had watched it soon after its release and he was full praise for Sanjeev Kumar and others’ performances in this movie.

Sanjeev Kumar was common favourite of all us friends. And in our circle of juniors and seniors we often discussed about his roles, and everybody would have likened his performance in each of his movies then.
We now move to the today’s song.

It is picturised on Moushumi Chatterjee and the actor whom I am unable to identify.

We can see Keshto Mukherjee, Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy with many others present in the picturisation of this song.
Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mahendra Kapoor and chorus. Lyrics are by Verma Malik and music is composed by

Let us now enjoy today’s qawwali watching Moushumi Chatterjee’s charming performance and Keshto Mukherjee’s special antics. 😊

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 139 # HAMSHAKAL- 1974 #
———————————————–

Today’s song is from the ‘1974’ movie ‘Hamshakal’.

This movie made its debut on the blog on 23.05.2009 with its most known song i.e.,Kaahe ko bulaaya mujhe balmaa, pyaar mein naam se. So this movie will complete twelve years on the blog 😊 hile still managing to stay unyippeeee’ed.

Another song from this movie, a male lullaby – Rastaa dekhe tera vyakul man mera was posted on the blog exactly a week after the first song. (i.e., on 30.05.2009).

The third song, another nice song Ham tum gum sum raat milan ki, aaja gori sun le baat… of this movie was posted on the blog next year in May’2010 on 10th May.

After this the movie was forgotten for almost ten years. Next song from the movie was posted on 29.12.2019, viz on the birth anniversary of Rajesh Khanna. This song was Aao bachchon main tumhe ek bahut achchhi kahaani sunaata hoon.

By this time the ‘blog ten-year challenge’ was already launched on the blog. The fifth song from the movie was covered under this challenge on 10.05.2020. The song was Phans gayi… udti chidiya, udte udte phans gayi.

By the way, the movie is eligible for both ‘11 year’ and ‘12 year’ challenge today. Taking this opportunity we will listen to the sixth and penultimate song of this movie.

This movie, inspite of being released when Kaka was at the peak of his career, having some beautiful music scored by Pancham Da, and lyrics written by Kaka’s favorite lyricist Anand Bakshi, failed at the box office. (And in this case the ‘Wikipedia’ also correctly mentioned this and not like other movies which were not much successful are now mentioned as ‘super-hit’ movies.

‘Hamshakal-1974’ was directed by Jambu for ‘Olympic Pictures, Madras’. It was produced by T. Govindarajan. It had Rajesh Khanna, Tanuja, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rajesh Behl, Asrani, Meena T., Uma Dhawan, Baby Sonu, Jankidas, Prem Kumar, Madhukar, Pahalwan, Kumud Chhugani, Jagdeep and others.

David, Aruna Irani, Manmohan and Asit Sen make special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Poovai Krishnan. Dialogues were written by Inder Raj Anand. Editing of this movie was done by C.P. Jamboolingam.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.04.1974.

(‘Hamshakal-1974’ was a remake of the 1970 Kannada film ‘Baalu Belagithu’, which was also remade in Telugu as’ Manchivadu’ (1973) and in Tamil as ‘Oorukku Uzhaippavan’(1976).)

‘Hamshakal-1974’ had seven songs in it and all were written by Anand Bakshi. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman.

Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Sushma Shreshtha had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Here is the list of songs of this movie ‘Hamshakal-1974’.

07 Aao bachchon main tumhe ek bahut achchhi kahaani sunaata hoon 29.12.2019

I had not watched this movie until now, but I was aware of a few of its songs since my ‘Kaka fan days’. I liked ‘kaahe ko bulaaya mujhe balmaa’, ‘rastaa dekhe tera vyaakul man mera’, ‘ham tum gum sum raat milan ki’.

Other songs of this movie were rarely heard. But I became aware of them after I get associated with this blog and started sending lyrics contributions. I sent one such song last year for the ‘blog ten-year challenge’. Our dear Prakash ji had also sent a song that time and luckily both of us had sent different songs and not the same one 😊.

Today I am presenting that song which was noted last year.

Also, from the above table we can see that majority of the songs of this movie got posted in the month of May (four songs earlier plus today’s one), so ‘May’ had turned out to be a ‘favorable’ month for this movie. And I wish the movie gets Yippeeee’ed in this ‘May’ itself.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar, and on the screen, it is lip-synced by Rajesh Khanna and Moushumi Chatterjee.

Let us now listen to this beautiful song …

Hullo Atuldom

At the outset let me admit that I was reminded of today’s song a few days back when I was writing the post for Moushumi Chatterjee’s birthday.

Today’s song is from the 1980 released Raj Khosla directed Moushumi Chatterjee- Rishi Kapoor starrer “Do Premee”. It had a cast of Om Prakash, I S Johar, Deven Verma, Col. Kapoor (also went by the name Raj Bharati), Geeta Bahl, Aruna Irani, Roopesh Kumar etc.

The movie was a standard love story where the young couple are children of fathers who are not friends. Retd. Col. Bhagwant Singh (Om Prakash) goes to the extent of getting Payal (Moushumi) engaged to Roopesh Kumar but of course the couple elope and reach Mumbai. They take up jobs as driver and maid in a rich girl’s household (of course both are not aware that they are employed by the same person). This rich girl (Geeta Bahl) looks after her family business and also visits a guru (played by Raj Bharati). He has a huge ashram and is shown to perform miracles like walking on water etc. The guru also has a secret attached to his ashram and Deven Verma (a cop in plain-clothes) is out to crack the mystery. Meanwhile the fathers reconcile their differences and come looking for their children and save them from the captivity of the guru in the climax for a All-is-well ending.

The movie had six songs of which the blog has two both of which were posted in 2018.

Mausam pe jaaani hai (a very popular song of the movie)
and
Ladki waalon ki taraf se ladke aalon ko mubaarak ho

The songs were written by Anand Bakshi, composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal, sung by Anuradha Paudwal, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Mohd. Rafi.

Today we are having a duet by Mohd Rafi and Anuradha Paudwal. It shows the young couple being playful with each other. The song was decently popular in its time.

Today we are thinking of Chintu on his first anniversary. Unbelievable that it is an year. He was a person who was on his way to recovery from cancer and had gone to Delhi for a shoot when the Pandemic hit the country. He returned to Mumbai when the lock-down was announced. We saw him on news channels when the country did the candle lighting and clapping (thali bajaoing) for the Pandemic warriors. Must say that he looked a pale shadow of his former self but the child-like enthusiasm and his charming smile was there for all to see.

Chintu (Rishi Kapoor) was rather active on social media and didn’t dither from stating his mind. In the last decade or so he was seen in a variety of roles:- an underworld don in “D-Day”, a grand old 90-year man in “Kapoor & Sons”; even a 75-year-old son to a 100 year-old Amitabh Bachchan in “102 not out”. A lot more would have come for us -his fans- but for the exit which came a year ago on this date. It was a sad day for many of his colleagues, fans and most of all his near and dear ones.

I am waiting to see what happened to that last movie that he was shooting in New Delhi before the Pandemic.

Missing this actor who acted from the age of two and half years to 63.

Hullo Atuldom

My last post on the blog mentioned that Moushumi Chatterjee had co-starred Vinod Khanna in a few movies. Today’s song is from one such movie.

“Hatyara” (The Murderer- 1977) was a movie which was directed by Surendra Mohan and produced by Sunil Sharma and J.R. Shah. Its cast consisted of Vinod Khanna (in a double role), Priyadarshini, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rakesh Roshan, as the romantic couples and Pran, Nirupa Roy, Raj Mehra, Chand Usmani as the elders, Kanhaiyalal, Manmohan, Dev Kumar were the spoilsports of the story. The cast also has Abhi Bhattacharya, Shahu Modak (in a blink and miss appearance), Gulshan Bawra and Rajesh Khanna in a special appearance. Pradeep Kumar, Mehmood and Laxmi Chhaya in guest appearances.

Pran and Predeep Kumar played bandits, who accidentally kill a man leaving his wife and son destitute. This sets Daulat Singh (Pran) thinking that it is easy to kill but difficult to rectify the “PAAP”. He surrenders and reforms. He returns from jail to a family of grownup children who are in love and he is only too glad to get the kids married. The hitch or stumbling block for him (Daulat Singh) is his past has caught up with him in the form of Inspector Prakash (Rakesh Roshan) whose mother (Nirupa Roy) recognizes the bandit and refuses to get her son married to a bandit’s daughter. The rest of the story is run-of-the-mill where the families go through the twists and turns that are scripted into the story before the movie ends with the bandit’s grandson being awarded a bravery medal as he (a cop) was instrumental in capturing dacoits.

The titles of the movie says that Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mehmood, Johnny jr. and Shahid Bijnori are the playback singers used for songs written by Visweswar Sharma, Vithalbhai Patel and Shahid Bijnori. Kalyanji Anandji were the music directors assisted by Anil Mohile, Frank and Babla.

27th April is the fourth remembrance day of the very handsome, smart, good looking (his fans can choose the adjective they like) Vinod Khanna. He was a moderately good dancer, emoted well, had a good physique; may not have been like the 6-pack sporting modern youngsters but still well built. He also produced a few movies :- the 1974 release “Farebi” (various sites are calling this movie ‘The Cheat’) was produced by Pramod Khanna so we can say it was Vinld Khanna’s own production and “Himalay Putra” to launch his son Akshaye Khanna in 1997. I don’t know if today’s movie “Hatyara” was his production but the movie opens by paying homage to Smt. Kamladevi Khanna and we know that Vinod Khanna’s mother’s name was Kamla. He began his career playing a small role in Manoj Kumar’s ‘Purab Aur Paschim’; Shammi Kapoor starrer ‘Jaane Anjaane’; villain in Rajesh Khanna’s ‘Aan Milo Sajna’; there were many such movies. He was appreciated in ‘Mere Apne’, ‘Achanak’, ‘Inkaar’, etc. He made a good pair with Amitabh in ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Parvarish’, ‘Khoon Pasina’, ‘Her Pheri’, etc. We saw him share screen space with Dharmendra in “Mera Gaon Mera Desh’, ‘The Burning Train’, ‘Rajput’, and many others. Similarly he was there with Shatrughan Sinha, Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor, etc and all the actresses of the 70s and 80s have acted with him- that list is long too.

Today’s song shows him dancing with Moushumi Chatterjee at his and his sister Priyadarshini’s engagement. We have the elders of the village as audience. Towards the end of the song Nirupa Roy makes her entrance and I suppose that is where the story of the movie takes a turn. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar and written by Vitthalbhai Patel.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 126 # Tumhaari Kasam-1978
——————————————-—————————

Most of us are familiar with this lovely song ‘ham dono milke kaaghaz pe dil ke chitthi likhenge, jawaab aayegaa’ from the movie ‘Tumhaari Kasam-1978’. This song used to be played frequently on radio when I was growing up(going by the release date of the movie I was just above ten years of age then).

I like this song very much and so when I prepared my list of songs that bring back memories this was by default included in my list. But what about other songs from this movie? I think they were not notable songs and were easily forgotten?

I was not aware about the other songs from this movie until this article when I looked upon to present a song from this movie on the blog.

‘Tumhaari Kasam-1978’ had made its debut on the blog well in the initial days of the blog i.e., on 04.10.2008.
So, today after a gap of ’12 years,05 months, and twenty-one days (‘4555’ days – including 24.03.2021) we are adding the second song of this movie. And I have deliberately chosen a lesser-known song from this movie sung by Preeti Sagar and lip synced on screen by Master Rajoo.

“Tumhaari Kasam-1978” was directed by Ravi Chopra for ‘Associated Films & Finance Corporation’. It was produced by C.V.K. Shastry.

This movie had Jeetendra, Navin Nischol, Moushumi Chatterjee, Padmini Kapila, Master Rajoo, Vimal Ahuja, Jagdish Raj, Prem Sagar, Achala Sachdev, Narbada Shankar, Lina Das, Ranjeet Sood, Anand Balraj, R.S. Chopra, Master Shaka and others. Komila Virk, Alka, Roopesh Kumar and Pradeep Kumar make special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Tikam. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Kamleshwar.
Pran Mehra was the Chief Editor for this movie and Editing was done by S.B. Mane with Pradeep Mehra as his assistant.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 09.03.1978.

This movie had four songs (including one two-part song) written by Anand Bakshi. Music was composed by Rajesh Roshan.

Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle, Preeti Sagar and Kishore Kumar give their voices to the songs in this movie.

here is a brief about this movie taken from ‘Wikipedia’;

Vidya (Moushumi Chatterjee) and Raja (Raju Shrestha) live in poverty. They get separated due to certain circumstances. Vidya starts working at Anand’s (Jeetendra) house as a maid. Raja is forced to beg for a local gang. While Vidya is attending to her chores, the alcoholic, Anand, tries to molest her. She escapes but is unfortunately hit by a speeding vehicle driven by Sunil Verma (Navin Nischol). This accident makes her visually impaired. The guilt-ridden Anand wants to apologize to Vidya. Will she accept the apology? Will Vidya reunite with her brother?

here is the list of songs of this movie as appearing in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980);

S.No. Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Ye naa hogaa, nahin hoga hoga…ham donon milke kaaghaz pe dil ke Asha Bhonsle, Mukesh 04.10.2008
02 Mera naam Raaja, main bheekh maangu kaise Preeti Sagar Being presented today
03 Hmm, zu zu … main husn ka hoon deewaanaa Kishore Kumar
04 Aye mast hawaa ye to bataa kis waqt yahaan Lata Mangeshkar
05 Ae ladki pyaar karegi, tu mera aitbaar karegi

(in two parts) Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar
*HFGK included the ‘title music track’ of this movie as the sixth soundtrack*

I have not watched this movie and only thing I associate this movie name is its ‘Asha-Mukesh’ duet so far. Also, I think this movie was not successful on the box office.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now listen to today’s song which also has the ‘signature touch’ of Rajesh Roshan. As mentioned above Master Rajoo is lip-syncing for Preeti Sagar’s voice and also seen in the picturization of the song are Anand Balraj, Moushumi Chatterjee and many others.

Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, one halfof the music director Laxmikant-Pyarelal was born on 03/09/1940. So that makes this 80th Birthday of the one of the most proficient, successful and talented musicians of the golden era of hindi film music. It is a well-known fact that both Laxmikant and Pyarelaljistarted their career as players of music instruments in the song recordings. If I am not mistaken, Pyarelalji, was a violinist.

‘Most proficient’ in the film industry’s history is the correct tag for Laxmikant-Pyarelal as they are the composers with the highest no. of songs composed which stands at 2901, in the blog’s stats page.

Laxmikant Pyarelal started as music directors in 1963, they hit the jackpot with Dost (1964). What followed is history, with awards, accolades and they never looked back. They are on record as loyalists of Rafi Sahab till his lifetime, who also sang maximum no of songs for them.

The achievements and success are too many, for me to start listing them. But their association with Anand Bakshi is the longest one, and must be the biggest such combo. I would guess the total songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal may have around 2000 written by Anand Bakshi.

On this birthday occasion , I am presenting the song from the film Krodhi (1981), by this very same team/combo of Lakshmikant-Pyarelal with AnandBakshi. The singers are Lata Mangeshkar and Suresh Wadkar. The was a multi-starrer film by Subhash Ghai. The starcast was Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Maushmi Chatterjee, Zeenat Aman, Shashi Kapoor etc and of course the love birds in the song, Sachin and Ranjeeta. The four songs of the film, which I remember are all nice one’s. But the movie is making a debut here on the blog with this song.

I have seen the movie, so can give a little outline of the story. Dharmendra is a gangster or smuggler, Zeenat Aman works for him and has a lot of regard and respect for him, as he has helped her a lot with the responsibilities. Zeenat Aman meets Shashi Kapoor (Police Inpector ?) at her sister’s wedding. Zeenat Aman and Shashi Kapoor get married, but Shashi Kapoor is not aware of the connection between Zeenat Aman and Dharmendra. The police is looking to arrest Dharmendra but he escapes and takes shelter in a village, where people mistake him for a godman or sadhu. Dharmendra adopts the disguise to escape the police. Sachin and Ranjita are the two characters who don’t make much difference to the story.

In the song, which Sachin and Ranjita are singing in the garden ‘Chameli baagh”, Dharmendra is looking on, and I think later on he helps them in some way or they are both murdered, by the villains. Dharmendra is also reminded of his late wife Maushmi Chatterjee while watching the song. Lata Mangeshkar is play backing for both Ranjita and Maushmi in the song.

The sort of word play which was a signature of Laxmikant Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi songs, is visible in this song.

chal chameli baagh mein
