‘Anjaam’ (1994) was produced by Rita Rawail and Maharukh Jokhi under the banner of Shiv-Bharat Films. The film was directed by Rahul Rawail. The star cast included Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan in primary roles supported by Deepak Tijori (guest appearance), Kiran Kumar, Sudha Chandran, Tinu Anand, Johny Lever, Kalpana Iyer, Himani Shivpuri, Beena, Rumi Jaffrey, Birbal etc. This was the first film of Shah Rukh Khan with Madhuri Dixit and his 3rd film in a negative role after the box office successes of his earlier two films with negative (rather anti-hero) roles in ‘Baazigar’ (1993) and ‘Darr’ (1993).

I had watched ‘Anjaam’ (1994) in a theatre when it was released sometime in April 1994. It was one of the rare breeds of Hindi films in which the performances of the primary actors were ‘A’ grade but the exaggerated violence shown especially in the second half of the film would beat even some of the ‘B’ grade films. In the second half of the film, the audience were bombarded with loads of sadistic violence. Surely, at the end, the audience came out of the theatres in depressed moods. The film was granted ‘A’ certificate by CBFC, probably for depicting excessive violence. Nonetheless, over the years, ‘Anjaam’ (1994) has gained the status of a cult film as an ‘out of the box’ film.

The story of the film is as under:

Vijay Agnihotri (Shah Rukh Khan) lives with his mother, Padma Agnihotri (Beena Banerjee) in a palatial mansion. He runs his family business and is a rich spoilt brat. He thinks that with his money power, whatever he desires it should come to him easily. At a birthday party, he sees Shivani (Madhuri Dixit), an air hostess who lives with her sister (Sudha Chandran) and her husband, Mohanlal (Tinu Anand). Vijay is smitten by her beauty and starts flirting with her. However, she tactfully handles his advances. After a couple of encounters with Shivani including on a flight to Dubai, Vijay falls in love with her. He believes that since he is rich and good looking, Shivani would agree to his romantic gestures. But she does not give him positive response because she is in the verge of getting married to Ashok Chopra (Deepak Tijori) who is a pilot in an airline.

Unaware of Shivani’s impending marriage with Ashok, Vijay with his mother visit Mohanlal’s house with a marriage proposal of Vijay with Shivani. But they see that Shivani’s marriage with Ashok is already in progress. After returning home, Vijay tries to commit suicide but is saved. This is a turning point for Vijay to become an obsessive lover of Shivani. From this point onwards, his plan is to separate Shivani from Ashok. He floats an airline in which he appoints Ashok as the General Manager only with a view to ensure that Shivani remains within his close range. After the birth of a daughter, Shivani resigns her job of air hostess and joins a NGO for physically/mentally disabled persons.

One day, Vijay witnesses Ashok hitting Shivani over some arguments. Vijay asks explanation from Ashok as to why hit Shivani. Their arguments lead to a fight in which Vijay badly beats up Ashok requiring hospitalisation. Shivani visits the hospital where Ashok is already on oxygen, battling for his life. Vijay visits Shivani and even in these adverse circumstances asks her to divorce Ashok and marry him. Their arguments leads Vijay to pull the oxygen mask off Ashok resulting in his death. When Shivani tries to get justice from the law, Vijay makes statements in the court against her character and her illicit relations with him to prove his innocence. In this matter, his friend, Inspector Arjun (Kiran Kumar) helps Vijay in fabricating the case against Shivani. Vijay is absolved of his criminal act.

Vijay’s pressure tactics continues for Shivani to marry him. But she refuses to budge. Enraged with her refusal, Vijay beats her and comes with a false criminal case against Shivani for his attempted murder. Shivani is unable to defend herself in the court of law and is imprisoned when she is pregnant with her second child. Her sister takes care of Shivani’s daughter. One day on the instigation of Vijay, her drunkard husband, expels his wife and the child out of his house. While walking on the road, they meet with a car accident and die. The car is driven by none other than Vijay who was drunk while driving his car. But Shivani in jail cannot do anything to fight in the court. On the other hand, a woman jail warden (Kalpana Iyer) beats up Shivani mercilessly for reporting to the higher authorities about her wrongdoings. This results in her miscarriage.

Shivani’s pent-up hatred towards Vijay now reaches the crescendo as there is nothing left in her life except her one-point programme – to take revenge against Vijay and all those who made her life hell. In the guise of a religious function in the jail, Shivani kills jail warden by putting her in gallows inside the jail without exposing herself of the crime. After three years, Shivani is released from the jail. First, she visit Mohanlal and kills him. Inspector Arjun is after her for killing Mohanlal. She kills him too by burning in a barn while he was trying to molest her.

Shivani’s last target, Vijay has shifted to outside Mumbai in a sanatorium. As part of the work of her NGO, she goes to the sanatorium where she finds Vijay on the wheelchair suffering from the paralysis. She does not want to kill the physically disabled Vijay. Instead, she helps him to recover from his disability. Once fully recovered, Vijay is back to his former self and asks her to marry him as she has no one now. In the guise of embracing him, Shivani stabs him. During their fights, both of them land on the edge of a cliff.

The film’s last scene shows Vijay hanging on a cliff holding Shivani’s legs, and she is holding the edge of the cliff with both her hands. Vijay tells her that if he falls, he will take her with him. Shivani shouts at him by saying that it is more important for her that he dies than she lives. With this, she frees her hand from the edge of the cliff, resulting in both falling to their death.

The film had seven songs including one song in four parts which were written by Sameer and set to music by Anand-Milind. I am presenting the first song from the film, ‘atharaa baras kee kanwaaree kalee thhee’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Purnima who sings for Madhuri Dixit. It is a dance song in which Shah Rukh Khan and Deepak Tijori among others are prominently seen.

In the film, this song seems like an item number because there is no context of this song with the story of the film in progress. Police Commissioner has hosted a party on the eve of the marriage of his daughter. He has invited elites of the society which include Vijay, Ashok and Shivani. Vijay is seeing Shivani after a gap of four years during which she along with her husband, Ashok were based in the USA.

The lyrics are sensual, probably getting the clue from the olden days in the villages where the only place for privacy for younger ones was agricultural fields. Hence ‘chane ke khet mein’ or ‘ganne ke khet main’ get used in such type of the songs. There is also some element of naughtiness in the song

There is a trivia on this song which was revealed by Madhuri Dixit in a TV interview. Originally, the song selected for this dance was a different one which choreographer, Saroj Khan and Madhuri Dixit felt not a good one for a dance song. The question was who will bell the cat as the director, Rahul Rawail was known for his short temper. They went together and brought to his notice about their reservation on the song. To their surprise, he agreed and got a new song, ‘chane ke khet mein’ written by Sameer. Anand-Milind composed the song afresh to suit for a dance. The song became a rage when its video clip was released.

this is one of the movies where SRK played a negative character. almost like Darr. Baazigar, Darr & Anjaam were films in which SRK’s character got good songs and gets killed in the end

Madhuri was very good playing the avenging angel. I have seen the film in parts & love the last scene where she says that she wants to death of her tormentor & not her own life

Peevesie’s Mom,

Thanks for your comments.

Shahrukh Khan took a calculated risk by accepting villianous roles without getting typecast. Vinod Khanna was also successfull in doing both hero and villian roles.
