Hullo Atuldom

6th February 2022 is the date when lovers of Indian music- across all categories- lost the soul/ voice behind such songs to realm of the other world.

Indian music can be categorized as Classical & Non-Classical; Classical being further categorized as Hindustani & Carnatic. Indian music also has genres like folk, bhajan, geet, ghazal, qawwali etc. that can be rendered in both non-classical as well as classical forms; following the rules of Hindustani as well as Carnatic music if the genres are in classical form.

Indian Film music also, follows all of the above rules, that I have stated about Indian Music. That is, films are heavily laden with songs that are folk, bhajan, geet, ghazal, qawwali etc. that can be Classical or Non-Classical; following the rules of Hindustani as well as Carnatic music if the genres are in classical form. Essentially, films that are made in South Indian languages base their music on the Carnatic style & films made in North Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi, Punjabi, Bengali etc. etc. base their music on the Hindustani style.
(I am ready to be corrected in all of the above, if my observations are wrong)

On February 6th 2022, our dear Lata Mangeshkar – who was also called the Nightingale of Indian Music, Queen of Melody, Voice of the Millenium, Saraswati herself etc.- bade farewell to this mortal world. She was only 92. Her’s was the voice that one heard on waking up through the various bhajans played in the morning hours. If the listener was a fan of Hindi film songs then it would be any song from ‘jyothi kalash chhalke’, ‘jaago mohan pyaare’, almost all the songs of Raj Kapoor’s ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (if one is of the newer generation) or any of the numerous bhajans that Lata didi (as she was fondly addressed) has rendered in films.

A music lover couldn’t complete their day without listening to her other songs as the day meandered to ‘Goodnight’ time and then their playlist would have songs like ‘aajaa ri aa nindiyaa tu aa’, ‘chanda o chanda’, ‘ankhiyon mein chhote chhote sapnay sajaayke’, etc. And if the person is a youngster, and also in love, then the night time songs maybe ‘sari sari raat teri yaad sataaye’, ‘neend kabhi rehti thi aankhon mein’, ‘raaton ke saaye ghane’, and many more. What I am trying to say through all of the above is that, one couldn’t and did not want to escape from the voice that was LATA MANGESHKAR.

I don’t know when Atulji last updated the statistics page of the blog, but as of today the blog has 3960 songs from a possible 5645 songs that Lata Mangeshkar is said to have sung for Hindi films. Of course, if we add the songs that she has sung in other languages like Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam etc. (she has sung in 36 Indian languages and a few foreign ones too) as also her non- film songs, the number of recordings against her name, the number will go up by thousands.

Remembering (as if music lovers will ever forget her) this Queen of Melody, Dadasaheb Phalke award & Bharat Ratna winner with a song that is a lorie (lullaby) from the Yash Chopra directed, 1991 released, “Lamhe”. The film starred Sridevi & Anil Kapoor in the lead with Waheeda Rehman, Anupam Kher, Dippy Sagoo, in supporting roles. Lalit Tiwari, Manohar Singh, Deepak Malhotra & Ila Arun were in special & guest appearances. Richa Pallod played the young Sridevi’s character of Pooja; Sridevi played a dual role of mother & daughter which won her a Best Actress award in that year’s Filmfare Awards function. Honey Irani got an award for Best Story, Anupam Kher won the Best Comedian, Neeta Lulla won for Costumes, and Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza won the award for Best Dialogues; despite the film itself being moderately successful among the audiences. Music maestros Shiv Kumar Sharma & Hari Prasad Chaurasia (as Shiv- Hari) were the music directors for songs that were written by Anand Bakshi.

The film had a parody song where Waheeda Rehman danced to one of the most famous songs of her’s (aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai) that had Lata Mangeshkar giving her her voice. The parody (Pyaar hua iqraar hua hai parody song) is already covered on the blog.

The following are the songs from “Lamhe” that the blog has.

Song Date of posting
Morni baagaan maa 20 march 2009
Mohe chhedo na nand ke laala 10 august 2012
Pyaar hua iqraar hua hai parody song 28 february 2018
Mhaare Rajasthan maa 20 march 2019

The combination of Lata Mangeshkar- Waheeda Rehman have given us such gems:-

‘Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai’
‘piya tose naina laage re’
‘o bekarar dil ho chuka hai mujhko aansuon se pyar’
‘sapne suhaane ladakpan ke’
‘kaari badariya maare lahariya’
‘rangeela re tere rang mein’

and numerous others, catering to every mood of the listener.

The song from “Lamhe” was the last that Waheeda Rehman got to lip-sync to Lata Mangeshkar. A song in the 2006 released “Rang De Basanti” had a Lata Mangeshkar song playing in the background when Waheeda Rehman’s character is weeping her son’s death. That song Lukka chhuppi bahut huyi saamne aaja re is already present on our blog.

I am sure the regular followers of the blog would have guessed the reason that I have chosen a song picturised on Waheeda Rehman for today’s post. She turned 87 on 3rd February. Here is wishing her health and happiness (a little belatedly)
