Today’s song is the last song from an obscure film Main Kya Karun-1945.

The film was made by Flora Films, Bombay, directed by Sudhir Sen. Ninu Mujumdar had given music to the songs written by D.N.Madhok.The cast was Shah nawaz, Pahadi Sanyal, Bikram Kapoor, E.Billimorea, Agha, Anil Kumar, Sunetra, Gulab, Motibai, Ratan piya and many others. The film was released on 12-7-1946. The dance director of this film was Prof. K.S.More (Moray/Morey), who had married the upcoming dancer Cuckoo.

1945 was the year when the devastating II World War ended and the film industry heaved a sigh of relief. Many irksome regulations were relaxed. There was no force now to make Propaganda films for war, no shortage of Raw Film and plenty of Finance available through black money , generated during the war times. However, the year saw only 73 Hindi films made.

One of the most successful and famous film directors of Hindi films – Bimal Roy had a beginning in 1945. He was the director of the Bangla film “Udayer Pathe”, based on the story by Jyotirmoy Roy. It was remade in Hindi as ” Humrahi”. Both versions became Hit films. Thus a cameraman and editor Bimal Roy emerged as a big name in Hindi films. He got this opportunity as New theatres, Calcutta had dried up with its ace and famous directors, who left the company and had marched towards Bombay, even when NT was downhill. This film was also noteworthy because Tagore’s ” Jan Gana Mana” was used in the film Humrahi-1945, which later on became India’s National Anthem (though it was written by Tagore to please and welcome King George V, on his visit to India in 1911).

Zeenat was another film whose music became popular, especially the All Women qawwali “Aahen na bhari”. Shashikala and Shyama faced the camera for the first time in this song.

Noorjehan’s “Village Girl” was a Hit, due to Shyamsunder’s melodious songs. Mohammad Rafi started his playback from this film with G.M.Durrani. Earlier he had sung a song in a chorus in film pehle Aap and few Punjabi films.

Lata Mangeshkar’s first Hindi song in a Hindi film was in the film “Badi Maa”.

Mukesh also sang his first playback in Pahli Nazar.

Saigal’s first film in Bombay-Tadbir was made by Jayant Desai.

2 Films on King Humayun were made. one by Mehboob was Humayun and the other was Ek Din Ka Sultan by Sohrab Modi.

Other successful films were Laila majnu, Lakha Rani (Guru Dutt was the Choreographer in this film), Moorti, Panna Dai, Phool (K.Asif), Chaand Chakori etc.

Devika Rani got married to Russian Painter- Roerich, left Bombay Talkies and settled in Himachal Pradesh, shifting to Bangalore after a few years.

The popular film magazine Film India had reviewed the film Main Kya Karun- after 3 months after its release- in its October-1946 issue. The story as given in it was…..

Two head-strong fathers (Shah Nawaz and Bikram Kapoor) get their boy and the girl married in their childhood. Soon the fathers start quarrelling eventually cutting off their relationship. The girl comes back to her father’s house.

Both the boy and the girl lose sight of each other over a period of time. They have grown up in their own environments. One day both of them meet each other without knowing that they were married in their childhood. The hero (Agha) falls in love with the heroine (Suraiya) who is a bit hesitant because she thinks that she was a child widow. However, the hero convinces her for the marriage.

In the meanwhile, there is another development. The hero’s friend is in love with his sister (Hansa Wadkar) who is the friend of the heroine. Multiple misunderstandings develop between all the four main characters resulting in some humorous situations. Finally, the marriage tangle is solved to the satisfaction of all.(as adapted by Sadanand Kamath ji).

This film is one example where the HFGK does not give details of the cast members, not even the hero-Agha, or others like Anil Kumar, Sunetra, Ratan Piya, Moti bai etc. These names were found in the film’s advertisement in the magazine. Possibly, the film booklet might not be available that time.

In the cast of the film Main kya karun-1945, 2 actors’ names are less known. Shah Nawaz Khan and Anil kumar.

Shahnawaz Khan, known only as Shah Nawaz was born on 18-9-1906 in Hyderabad Deccan. His father was a Major in Hyderabad’s Nizam Army. During his school education, he used to act in dramas. After Matriculation, he joined a Govt. Service in Hyderabad state. He was, however, keen on joining films and dramas. After 5 years, he left the job and started a Motor car business. In that connection, he would visit Bombay often and try his luck at different studios. Finally, his efforts bore fruit and he got a Villain’s role in film Bharat ka laal-36, in which he was listed as S.Nawaz. It was a stunt film made by the Kadam brothers (Harischandra rao and Chandra rao Kadam), with Master Bhagwan as the Hero.

After this, he never went back to Hyderabad. Then came his films Daulat-37, Toofani khazana-37, Rangila Mazdoor-38, Jungle king-39, Sardar 40 etc etc. In 1940, he joined Bombay Talkies and worked in films. He was apparently in Devika Rani’s camp. He was seen in Punarmilan-40,Bandhan-40, Jhoola-41, Naya Sansar-41, Kismet – 43 and Hamari Baat-43.He also worked in Masterji-43, Police,Parakh and Anban-44, Zeenat, Bhaijan and Humayun-45 and few more films. In all, he did 35 films in India. In 1948, Shahnawaz migrated to Pakistan. He was welcomed there. He did 41 films in Pakistan (32 Urdu and 9 Punjabi). Some of his films were quite famous like Aansoo-50, Sassi-54, Ayyaz-60 etc. Shahnawaz died in Karachi on 18-6-1971. His last released film was Nek Parween-75.

Actor Anil Kumar (Sardar Gul) was born in 1915 at Calcutta. His father had a fruit business. They were from Peshawar (just like Dilip Kumar). He was not much educated but could speak Hindi, Urdu and English fluently. Once he went to Bombay to meet a friend. There he met an old acquaintance, who took him to Sohrab Modi.

The good looking Sardar Gul was liked by Modi and he offered him the lead role in his film ‘ Saed E Havas’-36. Sardar Gul was given the screen name of Chandra Kumar. The film was based on a translation of William Shakespeare’s drama- King John, by Agha Hashra Kashmiri in 1907. Sardar Gul was to get Rs. 200 for this work. The film was a flop and Sohrab Modi refused to pay him more than Rs 50. Annoyed, he left Bombay and returned to Calcutta.

However he came back in 1938 and did his first film with a new screen name Anil Kumar. The film was Talwar ka Dhani-38. Soon he was well known and acted in 10 films in the next 3 years. As the decade of the 40s saw many new actors, producers and directors, he was reduced to Character roles and side roles. By 1950, he was almost like an extra. He did work in many films, but only few films credited him, as his roles were negligible. We find his name in just 30 films, where he was credited, the last such film being Tarzan and Deliailah-64. He had married a small-time actress named Nurjehan, who left films after their marriage.

Here is an 80 year old song, sung by Rajkumari and Hamida Bano. With this song, the film gets YIPPEED.
