R. Gnanathesikan is an Indian musician, arranger, conductor, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and playback singer popular for his works in Indian cinema, predominately in Tamil in addition to Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films. Regarded as one of the most prolific composers, in a career spanning over forty-nine years, he has composed over 8,600 songs, provided film scores for about 1,523 feature films in nine languages, and performed in over 20,000 concerts. He is nicknamed “Isaignani” (the musical sage) and is often referred to as “Maestro”, the title conferred to him by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London. We also know him as “Ilaiyaraja”.
I got acquainted with his work exactly 37 years back when I moved to South India. I heard the songs of films like ‘Mouna Raagam’, ‘Agni Nakshatram’, (Tamil movies by Mani Ratnam); ‘Moondram Pirai’ (remade in Hindi as ‘Sadma’. And, I would like to admit that I had not paid attention to the name of the music director at that timeEmoji); ‘Olangal’ (Malayalam film starring Amol Palekar), and many more. I immediately took to learning & appreciating Tamil & Malayalam songs.
As I have written above, “Sadma” (1983) was the first Hindi film with which Ilaiyaraja was associated with. By this time, he had worked his way up the ladder of the South Indian film & non-film music industry having started as assistant to various top music directors of the 1970s including Salil Chowdhury; who had said “Our main guitarist (Ilaiyaraja) in Madras is going to become the best composer in India” .
Post ‘Sadma’, every South Indian movie that was dubbed into Hindi, and having music by the Maestro, retained the tunes & only the words changed language- ‘Shirdi Sai Baba Ki Kahani’ (from the Telugu ‘Shirdi Sai Baba Mahathmyam’), ‘Velu Nayakan’ (from the Tamil film ‘Nayakan’), ‘Mayor Saab’ (from Telugu ‘Indrudu Chandrudu’) and so on & on & on…..
Before writing this post, I had considered songs from ‘Paa’, ‘Cheeni Kum’ and some of the other releases with Ilaiyaraja music. I found it rather interesting that he had reused tunes of his popular South Indian albums in many Hindi films where the music went on to become equally well received. Going further into his Hindi Discography, I found a song whose Tamil version, was one of the first Tamil song I learnt by-rote.
Presenting a song from the 1989 released, Raj N. Sippy directed “Mahaadev”. It released on 5th May 1989 ( exactly 36 years back). It was produced by Romu N.Sippy. It had 5 songs written by Farooq Qaiser which were in the voices of Asha Bhosle, Suresh Wadkar, S. Janaki, Mohd Aziz, Anuradha Paudwal & S. P. Balasubramaiam. An interesting trivia about this album is that for the song ‘Aaj Babua Bhaye Kotwal’ the voice in the LP records were of SP Balasubramaniam, whereas the digital versions feature Mohd Aziz. (I haven’t seen the film so I don’t know what the title cards or the film itself contains.)
The film had Meenakshi S1eshadri, Vinod Khanna, Raj Babbar, Sonu Walia, Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Tej Sapru, Satish Shah, Anjaan Srivastav, Beena, Ashalata, Kiran Kumar, Subbiraj etc. playing important roles.
It was a story of an inspector (Vinod Khanna) who resigns from police force due to corruption and returns to his hometown to be with his parents and his childhood lover Geeta (Meenakshi). But, unjust practices of the rich and corrupt people makes him rejoin the police force. (a typical masala action film I feel)
Today’s song is in the voices of Anuradha Paudwal & S. P. Balasubramaniam. The tune was originally used in a Tamil film called “Muthal Mariyathai” (meaning ‘First Honours’) which was a Bharatharaja film set in the rural hinterland of Tamil Nadu, having the Tamil legend Sivaji Ganesan as main lead. The story of ‘Mahaadev’ is not at all similar to the Tamil film.
Wishing ‘Isaignani’ health and good cheer on his birthday. I read another interesting trivia which I feel like sharing here: though he was born on 3rd June 1943, Ilaiyaraja celebrates his birthday on 2nd June to honour M. Karunanidhi whose birthday is also on 3rd June. Incidentally, it was Karunanidhi who gave Ilaiyaraja his epithet ‘Isaignani’.

this is use of the tune in the Tamil film.
It is filmed on a young couple played by Ranjini and Deepan. This couple play the second romantic lead whose romance is the reason the story moves towards the climax

After I sent the post, I read up about how the tune came to be used in the Hindi film. And I must say it was very Uncomplimentary towards the filmmakers
