Hullo Atuldom
“Pukaar” is a title that appears five times on the blog’s ‘LIST OF SONGS MOVIEWISE’. The title has been used in movies released in 1939, 1983 & 2000; there have been two unreleased films with this title who’s years have been given as 1970 & 1971. Meer Sahab, R. D. Burman & A. R. Rahman were the music director for the 1939, 1983 & 2000 released ‘Pukaar’ (don’t know if there is a plural possible for the word ‘Pukaar’). Naushad & Ejaz Ashok were the music directors of the unreleased ‘Pukaar’. All the films with the title ‘Pukaar’ that are on the blog are only one or two songs old. (Here I would like to mention that I am speaking of the films posted & I don’t know if there are any other films with the title ‘Pukaar’ yet to appear on the blog).
As I was reading the posts of the song from the 1970 ‘Pukaar’ I found that it was the unfinished work of Sohrab Modi and it was scheduled to have a grand starcast as per this post of Maheshji. I also know that the 1939 ‘Pukaar’ was produced & directed by Sohrab Modi. Interesting trivia, I must say.
We are focusing on the ‘Pukaar’ that released in 1983 for today’s post. Why? Simple to remember the work of a music director who was the favourite of an entire generation of film music lovers across a few languages like Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Odiya, Tamil & Marathi. He was a Filmfare Award winner for ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ (in 1983), ‘Masoom’ (in 1984) & ‘1942 A Love Story’ (in 1995) along with being nominated 16 times from 1972 for ‘Caravan’ (released in 1971) to 1986 for ‘Saagar’ (released in 1985). I found it interesting that he had three nominations in 1976- two as music director for ‘Khel Khel Mein’ & ‘Sholay’ and one as playback singer for ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’ from ‘Sholay’. I would like to mention that the award for the best music director at the 1976 Filmfares was won by another son of the film industry- Rajesh Roshan for ‘Julie’. Kishore Kumar was the winner of the 1976 Filmfare award fro best singer for his ‘dil aisa kisi ne mera toda’ from ‘Amanush’.
Another interesting thing that I saw was in the Filmfares of 1974 R. D. Burman’s ‘Yaadon Ki Baarat’ (a 1973 release) lost out to S. D. Burman’s ‘Abhimaan’ (1973).
Our blog’s stats page says that R. D. Burman had 1755 scores in 331 films of which the blog has 888 songs, i.e. we are approximately halfway to covering all of Panchamda’s (as R D Burman was fondly called) compositions. Of course, the discography of Panchamda as available on various sites, speak of many unreleased movies and a few of the songs from those are there on the blog like ‘kuhu kuhu koyaliya bulaaye re’ from ‘Devdas’ of 1980.
What more do I add about this music director who was an inspiration for the next generation & later generations of music directors of Indian filmdom. There have been music directors & filmmakers who have openly idolised Panchamda.
‘Dil Vil Pyar Vyar’ (2002) was wholly inspired by the songs of Panchamda. The movie contained several re-arranged hit songs of R.D. Burman sung by singers like Kavita Krishnamurthy, Hariharan, Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Alka Yagnik, Sadhna Sargam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Babul Supriyo, and Shaan. The re-arrangement was done by Babloo Chakravorty.
The Filmfare R. D. Burman Award is given by the Filmfare magazine as part of its annual Filmfare Awards for Hindi films. Named in honour of music director R. D. Burman, the award recognises new and upcoming talent in Hindi film music. The first R. D. Burman Award was given in 1995. A.R. Rahman was the 1st recipient.
Getting on to the song for today; it is sung by R. D. Burman & his friend (God & only the concerned two know for how many years they were associated) Kishore Kumar. I have read at various places, heard online interviews about Panchamda being devastated when Kishore Kumar passed away. (let us not delve into this here).
‘Pukaar’ (1983) was produced & directed by Ramesh Behl who was known for successful films like ‘The Train’ (1970), ‘Kasme Vaade’ (1978), ‘Jawaani’ (1983), ‘Apne Apne’ (1987) etc. It should be noted that R.D. Burman was the music director used by Ramesh Behl in all his movies.
Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim, Amitabh Bachchan, Randhir Kapoor were the main cast of ‘Pukaar’ with Prem Chopra, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Om Shivpuri, Sudhir Dalvi, Pinchoo Kapoor, Satyen Kappu, Sharat Saxena, Macmohan, Viju Khote, Chand Usmani, etc. in supporting cast. Sudha Chopra, Shubha Khote, P. Jairaj, Radhika Bartake, Narendranath etc. were in blink & miss roles.
Panchamda sang for Amitabh Bachchan & used Kishore Kumar’s voice for Randhir Kapoor (would love to know why this happened). Asha Bhosle sang for the ladies. Amitabh Bachchan sang a duet with Panchamda which was not appreciated by the connoisseurs at that time as the lyrics were said to be inane. (But then there are numerous songs with inane lyrics through the history of Hindi film music). Gulshan Kumar Mehta (pen name Gulshan Bawra) was the lyricist.
The Kishore Kumar – R.D. Burman duet is at a restaurant where Ronnie (AB) is singing praises of birthday-girl Julie (Zeenat) with Shekar (RK) singing for a blushing Usha (Tina). Only thing is that Ronnie is unaware that Shekar is at the place on a recce mission as the film’s story was based on the freedom struggle & liberation of Goa.
This was the only film where Amitabh Bachchan & Tina Munim were cast together & the last of Zeenat’s as AB’s heroine.
Remembering Panchamda with a song in his voice on what would have been his 86th birthday.

@Peevesie’s Mom jee,
Many thanks for this post. Nice post and song to celebrate the birth Anniversary of our beloved Pancham Da. Reading the ‘Filmfare’ trivia is interesting. I think this movie was around the same time when Kishore Kumar had stopped singing for Amitabh Bachchan, and that is why Pancham give playback for Amitabh in this movie.
Thanks again for your valuable contribution on Pancham’s Anniversary.
Regards,
Avinash
