“Nav Durga”(1953) was produced by Homi Wadia and directed by Babubhai Mistri for Basant Pictures Bombay. The movie had Usha Kiran, Mahipal, SN Tripathi, Sulochana Chatterji, Amarnath, Agha Shapur, Raja Sandow etc. in it.

Our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh jee, while covering the previous song from this movie, had given details about this movie. Here are the details of this movie as given by him:-

Navdurga-1953 is a story of Navratri and the power of Maa Shakti in 9 different forms. Navratri, literally a celebration of nine nights, is a festival that actually occurs once in every quarter, i.e. four times a year. Of these, the celebration that occurs in the month of Chaitra and the month of Ashwin are the better known and more popular Navratri celebrations. The Chaitra navratri ends with the celebration of Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Ram. The Ashwin Navratri is followed on the next day by Dushehra, the celebration of the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the King of Lanka. Besides these two, the navratri celebrations also occur in the months of Aashaad and Paush / Maagh. These are also called the Gupt Navratri, or the lesser known or secret Navratri.

The Navratri or the festival of nine nights, is a celebration of the nine manifestations of Mother Goddess. These nine forms of manifestation are Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyaayini, Kaalraatri , Mahagauri and Siddhidaatri.

“Nav Durga”(1953) by coincidence had nine songs in it. Eight of these songs have been covered in the blog.

Here are the details of the eight songs that are already covered:-

One can observe from the above that Geeta Dutt was the main singer in the movie with as many as five songs. Two were solo songs, two were duets with Rafi and one was a duet with her sister Laxmi Roy. Apart from Geeta Dutt, the other singers were Rafi, Chitragupta, Laxmi Roy, Shamshad Begam and Asha Bhonsle. Rafi, Chitragupta, Laxmi Roy and Shamshad Begam’s voices figured in two songs each, whereas Asha Bhonsle’s voice was used in one song. Ramesh Chandra Pandey was the main lyricist who penned seven songs out of nine. Anjum Jaipuri was the other lyricist who penned two songs.

Only audio of the songs are available. It appears that the video of the movie are no longer available, even though it was a hit movie of its time. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of these songs.

Here is the ninth and final song from “Nav Durga”(1953) to appear in the blog. This is the rarest song from the movie that has become available online just a few month ago. This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Anjum Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.

With this rare song, all the nine songs of “Nav Durga”(1953) are covered in the blog. This movie thus gets YIPPEED in the blog.
