Blog Day :

6235 Post No. : 19279

YouTube is an American social media and online video sharing platform owned by Google. It is an amazing tool that helps us in our blogging expedition. Based on our previous search history, it keeps suggesting links to videos.

That means, for followers of ATULSONGADAY, YouTube will keep suggesting videos of Hindi Fillum Sangeet. The suggestions may also be based on any particular actor, movie or artist, specially if we have looked up for songs of the concerned artist.

So, as I was browsing through YouTube yesterday, I came across a song which had Sunny Deol trying to shake a leg in tandem with Sridevi for a song that was playbacked (I am sure there is no such word in the English dictionary) by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle. It had Meenakshi Seshadri & Anil Kapoor, standing among the people who were watching the proceedings. On looking up for details, on our blog of course, I found that it has found its place on the blog in 2022 with this post by Avinashji.

A thought crossed my mind as I was seeing the YouTube video, and I found that I have expressed it on the comments to Avinashji’s post

“Another movie from 1989 which is on my “to be seen” list. Have seen it in parts and recall there is a “Daaku” angle to it. But why didn’t they make Meenakshi Seshadri also dance, it would have been such a lovely sight to see the 2 dance together”

My yesterday’s thought I have highlighted above.

I searched further to find that, indeed the film had a duet song which had Meenakshi Seshadri & Sridevi dancing- in an eye pleasing tandem. They are dressed beautifully and look out of this world.

I am bringing a song from the 1989 released “Joshilay” today on the occasion of Sridevi’s birth anniversary. She would have been 62. She was said to be the ‘first female superstar’ of Indian films, having worked across the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada & Hindi film industries. She began her career as a child actor in Tamil films, at the age of 4. Adult roles came about when she was approximately 13. She first appeared in a Hindi film in 1979 as a 16 year old in a film (aptly titled) ‘Solva Sawan’ which was not a noticed Hindi debut. The 1983 “Himmatwala” put her on the list of most-sought-after actress of her times. She went on to be cast with all the heroes of the 70s, 80s & even alongside the Khans of the 1990s. She never shied away from acting in two-heroine films with Jaya Prada being her most common female co-star; the gossip columns of those times wrote pages after pages about the supposed rivalry between the two ladies. But watching them together on-screen was an experience – they emoted, and danced well together. Every film with the two of them had at least one dance of the two together.

Sridevi was a Padma Shri winner along with a recipient of various other State awards plus a few Filmfare Awards too. She went on a hiatus after her marriage, and mother’s death in 1997. She made a comeback in 2012 as Shashi Godbole in Gauri Shinde’s directorial debut ‘English Vinglish’. Her last released film was ‘Mom’ as a vigilante who sets out to avenge her stepdaughter after she is sexually assaulted at a party. She won a National Award for this role (posthumously).

Details about “Joshilay” have been provided by Avinashji in his post, which I am copy-pasting here.

“Joshilay-1989” was directed by Sibte Hasan Rizvi for ‘New World Enterprises’. It had Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Satyen Kappu, Alok Nath, Prema Narayan, Rajesh Puri, Rama Vij, Bharat Bhushan and Master Jatin Khurana, Harjeet Walia, Hanif, Agarwal, Bhiku Verma, Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Hemant Mishra, K.L. Shetty, Deepak Kejriwal, Satish Kaushik, Kumud Tripathi, Ashok Sharma, Ami Asthana, Ravi Shastri, Mahendra, Arvind, Deep Dhillon.

This movie introduced Rajesh Vivek as ‘Jogi Thakur’.

Story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Javed Akhtar.

Editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu.

Javed Akhtar also wrote the lyrics of the songs in this movie. As mentioned above music of this movie was composed by R.D. Burman.

“Joshilay” or “Joshile” was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1989.”

This movie has five songs as per details given below of which the following are on the blog, all of them contributions by Avinashji. He seems to have loved this film when it released, it is still on my to-be-seen list.

Song Date of post
O dhola dhol manjeera baaaje re 24 November 2022
Naa jaa jaan e jaan 27 June 2024
Josheelay wo shahzaaade hain zameen ke 17 January 2025

Here is the fabulous dance where Sridevi is dressed as per her character – a banjaran. The ladies are matching step-for-step & the sisters Asha Bhosle & Usha Mangeshkar are matching note-for note. What more does a HFM fan need. From the picturization I feel it must be a pre-climax song.

Missing the beautiful Sridevi on her birth anniversary.
