Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 38
“Ba Babalu Ek Main Ek Tu” by Asha Bhosle from “Agni Rekha” (1973). The song is written by Kavi Pradeep and composed by Kalyanji Anandji.
“Agni Rekha”(1973) was produced by K S Melwani and directed by Mahesh Kaul for Mel-Kaul Films. The movie had Sanjeev Kumar, Sharada(known in South Indian film Industry as Urvashi Sharada), Bindu, Helen, Durga Khote, Asrani, Sajjan, Jankidas, Yashodhara Katju, Suresh Chatwal, Chand Usmani, Kumud Tripathi, Lalita Kumari, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Pal Mahendra, Radheyshyam, Chandrima Bhaduri, Indrani Mukherjee etc in it.
Agni Rekha deals with social stigma, morality and the possibility of redemption for a woman with a troubled past. The film focuses on the emotional conflict of a man who marries a widow with a child, only to discover a dark truth about her past. It’s a sensitive portrayal of how society often refuses to forgive a woman’s mistakes, no matter how much she reforms.
Here’s the story of the film:
Prabha (Sharada) is a young woman married to a man named Jagdish (Ramesh Deo). The marriage is troubled, and Jagdish is an alcoholic, irresponsible, and abusive. Despite her suffering, Prabha tries to keep her marriage intact. However, Jagdish dies in an accident, leaving her a widow with a small son.
Soon after, Prabha meets Rajesh (Sanjeev Kumar), a kind-hearted schoolteacher. Rajesh is impressed by her dignity, dedication to her son, and resilience in the face of hardship. Against societal norms, Rajesh falls in love with Prabha and decides to marry her, believing that her past should not matter.
But the happiness is short-lived. A man from Prabha’s past resurfaces and claims that before her marriage to Rajesh, she had been involved in an illicit relationship. Rajesh is shattered and torn between his love for Prabha and the social stigma attached to her past.
The community also begins to gossip, ostracizing Prabha and questioning Rajesh’s decision. Rajesh struggles with his own prejudices while trying to decide whether love and trust can outweigh society’s judgment.
Ultimately, Rajesh realises that Prabha’s worth lies not in her past mistakes but in the dignity, honesty, and devotion she shows in the present. He stands by her, defying social norms and reaffirming their relationship, symbolically crossing the “Agni Rekha” (line of fire) of societal prejudice.
Two songs from this movie have already been covered in the blog. Here’s the third song which is lip synced by Helen while Sanjeev Kumar and Bindu watch the performance in a club.
