Hullo Atuldom
18th August 2025. It is the 92nd birthday (completes 91) of a most revered lyricist/ poet, writer and film director of Hindi Films. He was born Sampooran Singh Kalra in a Sikh family in the small town of Dina (now in Pakistan). Deeply engrossed in literature and poetry right from his school days, he avidly listened to Hindustani music, attended concerts by Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
His family moved to Delhi after Partition, but Sampooran moved to Bombay to pursue his ambition to become a writer. He started working as a mechanic in a garage and wrote poetry in his free time under the pen name (first) Gulzar Deenvi & later on (simply) Gulzar. All this is public knowledge.
Gulzar saab (as he is addressed) has won 5 Indian National Film Awards:- including 2 Best Lyrics, one Best Screenplay, one Second Best Feature Film (director), and one Best Popular Film (director). Also, he has won 22 Filmfare Awards, one Academy Award (Oscars as it is commonly called), and one Grammy Award. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award – Hindi in 2002, the Padma Bhushan in 2004, the third-highest civilian award in India, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, the highest award in Indian cinema. In 2024, Gulzar was awarded the Jnanpith, India’s highest literary award. Such a decorated personality.
Gulzar saab is always seen dressed in crisp white Kurta- Pyjama (which many say is his trademark), but it seems this was not always the case & initially he used to wear the Dhoti-Kurta. This I learnt from a recent video on YouTube.
It is well known that ‘more gora ang layle‘ from ‘Bandini’ (1963) was the break through song in Gulzar saab’s career; but his first songs under the pen-name of Gulzar Deenvi was for the 1960 release ‘Shriman Satyawadi’, ‘Choron Ki Baraat’ & ‘Diler Haseena’. I am unsure about the chronological order in which he wrote the songs for these early films of his, but ‘Bandini’ had him as GULZAR.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Aashirwad’ (1968) had Gulzar saab as lyricist & dialogue writer. From 1971, he also started writing screenplay with the Rajesh Khanna starrers ‘Anand’ & ‘Mehboob Ki Mehndi’. 1971 also saw him turn director with ‘Mere Apne’ which had Meena Kumari in a major role with Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha also in the cast. ‘Parichay’, ‘Koshish’, ‘Achanak’, ‘Aandhi’, ‘Khushboo’, ‘Mausam’, ‘Kinaara’, ‘Kitaab’, ‘Meera’, ‘Angoor’, ‘Namkeen’, ‘Ijaazat’, ‘Libaas’,’Lekin’, ‘Maachis’, & ‘Hu Tu Tu’ were the films he directed.
He has also directed a few televison serials. Post 2004, when he directed a TV series based on Munshi Premchand’s stories, he has concentrated on being a poet/ lyricist. Of course, his voice has been heard in a few Non-Film albums like ‘Gulzar in conversation with Tagore’ (released in 2016) which is essentially a ‘Love Letter from one poet to another’. This particular album has also been described as translation of lyrics for seven of Tagore’s songs; with some additional lyrics- all in collaboration with Shantanu Moitra, Shaan, & Shreya Ghoshal.
In between all these film & related writing, he is also a prolific writer with around 13 books with his poetry having been published thus far.
I would like to mention that he has won the Filmfare award for best lyricist 13 times, and 4 times as dialogue writer. He won a Filmfare for best director for ‘Mausam’.
All this is no mean feat.
I would not even venture to list out all my favourite songs that he has written, I will simply say name a song of his & I will say ‘it is a lovely song, with an amazing play of words’- how else to describe a song which has lines like
‘din ne haath thaam kar,
idhar bithhaa liyaa
raat ne ishaare se,
udhar bulaa liyaa’
or
‘jab taare zameen par chalte hain,
aakaash zameen ho jaata hai
us raat nahin phir ghar jaata,
wo chaand yahin so jaata hai’
What I mean to say is Gulzar saab has a knack of making Din a human who will make you sit & take notice of the happenings around you. If one listens to Gulzar saab’s song you will find Stars walking the earth & the Moon refusing to go home.
I can go on writing forever about Gulzar saab’s songs & movies. But instead I shall get on to today’s song. It is a duet from Geetanjali Chitradeep’s (meaning Hemant Kumar’s home production) “Raahgeer” (1969) which had Tarun Majumdar as director. The actors in the film were Biswajeet, Sandhya Roy, Shashikala, Padma, Nirupa Roy, Vasant Choudhury, Kanhaiyalal, Anwar Hussain, Pahari Sanyal, Iftekhar, Prasenjit, Asit Sen, Chaman Puri, Sabita Chatterjee, Ram Avtar, C.S. Dubey, Rashid Khan.
Music director for the film was Hemant Kumar for the 10 songs that had Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Sulakshana Pandit, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Usha Maangeshkar, Aarthi Mukherjee, Hemlata & Hemant Kumar (himself) as playback singers. The blog has the following songs from the film

I don’t know much about this film but this is what I found on some site on the internet:-
“This was a remake of the celebrated Bengali film “Palatak” (1963). Tarun Majumdar, the director of the remake, had directed the Bengali original along with two co-directors – Sachin Mukherjee and Dilip Mukherjee. The film was based on the story “Angti Chattujjer Vai” by Manoj Basu. Hemant Kumar, who composed the music for the Bengali film, also composed the score for the remake.”
Wishing the ever young Gulzar Saab a lot of Good Health and Happiness with family & friends on his Birthday.
